EPA Releases Much-Anticipated Limits On Power Plant Emissions

EPA Releases Much-Anticipated Limits On Power Plant Emissions

“We use ambient temperatures because that is the most abundant form of energy available. The problem has always been making use of low temperature resources in a cost effective manner. Senft demonstrated a Stirling Engine that ran off a Delta T of 1/2 K. Low power but if you put it under high pressure and couple two engines out of phase it would work on paper but the engineering would be a nightmare as would the cap costs. Particular hydride and refrigeration pairs are away around this, but even here the heat transfer engineering was a pain in the you know what! We are good for stationary apps and ships, but you won't be putting it in your car anytime soon. That was the original goal but we had a choice economy or expensive lab queen, and chose to go where we can make some money. I do think that we will make Tesla's chargers ubiquitous. For electricity we can reduce it to the cost of an appliance which will provide you with power constantly for the life of the appliance. At a cost lower than anything that came before.”

“Not zero cost electricity, you always have the capital costs, but if capital costs are the same as the lowest cost alternative fossil fuel system. (Natural gas Turbine) and you can run without intermittency without fossil fuels, the fuel cost is the avoided costs. And not worry it will make perfect sense when you have your own system. I and my partners have paid for the R&D for almost a decade. What had originally looked easy on paper was a nightmare to engineer a working product. There is no free power as you always have a cost, but the cost of electricity has just been reduced to cap cost over 20 year life of plant. Plant cost per KW is in range of $600/KW capacity when over 10KW and up. It makes perfect scientific sense, if you view the dual nature of the hydrides, alternately acting as heat engines and then heat pumps, and the refrigeration coupling as thermal storage mechanism. The only remaining issue is safety issues, which we believe we have addressed.”

GO ROMNEY on Jun 20, 2014 at 09:49:58

“I actually think we agree. Electricity is the power of the future and any high tech way to produce it should be researched. Wind, solar and hydro cannot produce anywhere the amount of energy we need. I am not familiar with the chemical processes you mention.
But certainly, any electricity will not be 'free' as you said in your first email.”

“Also Stirling engines do not care about what the temp is but rather the temp difference. CeNi5 has an equilibrium pressure of just over 613 PSI at 10C. At -5C it's eq is about 306 PSI.”

GO ROMNEY on Jun 17, 2014 at 15:55:41

“Ok fine, temp delta can be used. So all you have to do is create something at 100deg in a zero deg environment.
And yes I am a mechanical engineer, well versed in thermodynamics, and you mke no scientific sense.
You really believe you will have zero cost electricity? Who pays for the research, development, production and transmission of your 'free' power?”

This just means you are not a scientists or engineer. Why? Because you can run the Seebeck effect regardless of temp, its temp difference.”

“I am not, and I'm not giving you all the details, but I can point you in a direction.

CeNi5 Cerium Nickle Hydride, some other hydrides will work as well. However to make a product you need to match up the refrigeration loop and you need to be able to have very high heat transfer. Think what you like. Going to the moon was once upon a time science fiction. Also Lord Kelvin declared we would never have powered flight. It's real science and its here to stay. The costs are less. Safety factors are the only issue, because you have high pressure hydrogen.”

“I love when people say its absolutely impossible, because unless they are referring to the laws of thermodynamics, they are almost always wrong!

It's all about temperature differentials and heat engines could care less if you go up or down. If you have a low temperature phase change material, whose equilibrium pressure doubles or halves in 15 K temp increments and is above 600 PSI at say 10C and couple it to a refrigeration cycle, the mass flow can drive the refrigeration cycle, with about 10% of the energy, 50% is consumed in the cycle which is just heat transfer from one to the other, and about 10% of heat transfer is fluid power which can be used for running a generator. You can then get another 10% from the heat transfer which is mostly the internal energy within the phase change materials flipping. Overall 20% of heat transfer is converted to useable energy, and conversion is the wrong word, and the heat energy mostly remains internal, only 20% of the heat flow becomes work. But be sceptical, big claims demand scepticism, but when you find its for real give credit, where credit is due. American Made!”

Novel phase change materials which generate a high pressure gas stream and is completely reversible. But hey keep on thinking what you are thinking because its nice to beat the bully on the block!”

“It's not a decade away. It will be here this year. You will soon be watching the news and hear about it, and it is the end of coal and oil as we know it. A renewable technology, no intermittency, and less expensive by orders of magnitude than fossil fuels. I will be driving an electric car soon. Why because it won't cost me anything to drive it.”

It is physically and scientifically impossible for solar and wind to provide our energy needs, and what happens when it is dark , cloudy or the wind is not blowing?
Hydro is a great, reliable source of electricity, but you guys keep destroying hydro dams to save the fish.
Of course your type also made nuclear un economic, tho France gets 75% of its electricity from nuclear.

“Really? Even china recognises the folly of coal. Now clean coal would be a different animal but coal, is best used as a chemical precursor not for fuel. Same with most petroleum products. We are soon going to have clean renewable energy which is less expensive than either coal, gas, or petroleum based products. At which points its the least expensive energy that wins. You will be hearing about this new technology this year, and while it may not impact this years elections, it will end the debate over coal and petrol in the future. Sure legacy cars and jet airlines will still use petrol for years to come, everything else will be electric powered by this new electric generation technology that takes temperature from 0 to 38C and converts it to electricity efficiently. Under $600 per KW of capacity and no fuel to buy.”

“Well then, you should know most inter sexed children will only have the possibility of having children as one sex, and they don't usually have both fully developed sexual organs. Also consider Klinefelter's syndrome where the body cannot process androgens, so she appears 100% female at birth, and it is only when she does not menstruate when she is 14 or 15 that it is discovered that genetically she has an x and y chromosome. She has been a woman since she was born, and that will not change. A woman with Klinefelter's is unable to conceive. A transgender woman or man is just a continuum on sex and gender which is usually binary but not always.

I would say and most research supports this by the time you are 6 and certainly by 10 you know your gender, and once set that's it. It is like imprinting. Sexual orientation is separate from this and only gets set in stone much latter. Also transgendered people much like intersex people can choose to stay how they are, or if they are uncomfortable we have more and more medical procedures to help them. At some point in the future we will even be able to allow them to have children in their chosen gender.”

In 2010, despite nearly unanimous opposition from Republicans, the DREAM Act passed the House. The bill died in the Senate, even though three years earlier, a dozen Republican senators had supported it. ABC News wrote at the time: "By a vote of 55 to 41, the bill -- the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM Act -- failed to win the 60 votes needed to break a GOP filibuster, even though the measure passed the House last week."”

“Silly rabbit tricks and lies are for the mentally challenged and the GOP who perpetrate them.

In fact, Obama and the Democrats did try to address immigration reform in 2009 but were rebuffed by Senate Republicans -- something right-wing media have been trying to erase from the historical record. Moreover, when it became clear that immigration reform would not be attainable, Obama focused his administration's efforts into ramping up enforcement and fortifying the border -- which many Republicans demanded as a condition for supporting reform.”

“In 2009, the DEM's had a clear majority in both Houses. There is NO reason that they could not have passed CIR, if it was important to them. What you mean, is that the Dem's were not "lock step" with Obama on this one. They passed ACA. AS to the increased border enforcement, NOT impressed with 44% Border security on the southern border. AND, STILL NO dept to monitor visas, overstays, & do they leave when their visa expires.”

“Mr. Pavlick you have a very negative and limiting view of the world. 1 in 3000 births are born intersexed. Most of these people go on to marry and live happy lives, and they adopt. Same will happen for transgendered men and women. It matters not if the transgendered person is gay or straight, the right person will love you for you. There will be lesbians which will question if you are a real lesbian just as some straight men will question if you are a woman. That is on them, and it revolves around their internal insecurities. Luckily society is evolving and is not as limited as you. It is embracing love and understanding. Give it a try, its less poisonous than hate.”

Robert K Pavlick on May 24, 2014 at 09:47:29

“Kim, if a person is born a hermaphrodite, that's an entirely different issue because they have both sets of sex organs and can, at an appropriate time down the line, (not at age 5) choose which sex they feel more aligned with. If they choose to be a man, they will be able to father children. If they choose to be a woman, they will be able to be a mother. But a transsexual can be neither.

I am not preaching hate or intolerance, God knows I have suffered enough of that myself as a gay man. But even I, only came out when I was 21 and AFTER I had come to the conclusion that I could never even be bisexual, let alone hetero. I am just advising parents and children to wait until the REALLY know, because it is an irreversible decision. I don't hate anyone; I am only trying to help people avoid a lot of pain and suffering.”

“There is no pleasing people. Obama could walk on water and people would say he had not washed his feet beforehand and therefore was polluting the water!

The flip side is that with some he can do no wrong. To me this black and white view of politics, you are either saint or devil is what prevents us from having good political outcomes. Obama has been a good President but he is not perfect, he has had obstacles thrown in his way, and had difficulties handed to him that few Presidents have had to deal with. He makes the Blue Dogs unhappy and the progressives unhappy. That is a sure sign that he is pushing both sides to try and get the most done, while holding onto the coalition needed to win.

I have a distaste for political compromises, but that is the nature of a democratic republic. The thing the liberals, progressives and tea have in common, is they abhor compromise. Obama has been a good manager, but a poor salesman, and naive when dealing with the GOP and assuming they would compromise fairly without him holding unfair leverage. I know he wanted to bring the GOP into the fold and form a team of rivals, but you can only do that if the other side agrees to play.”
