“The "teabaggers" proper are a small minority .... and will NEVER listen to progressive ideas, especially with their hatred and willful distortion of who Barack Obama really is.
However, there is a larger percentage of working class people who could be reached with some of the ideas you mention.
Many educated people that you lump into the "liberal elites" actually worked at McDonald's and other such places to help put themselves through undergraduate programs and advanced degrees. To imply that they have no ken of the working class is misguided at best. The anger I have seen in the red state where I reside is focused like a laser beam on PO ..... and not as some generalized working class rage.”

For those people who don't believe mere "words" matter:
If this is true, you can't blame the Palins, Limbaughs, Becks, Bachmanns et al of the country for stirring up hate or propagating damaging lies and misinformation to millions of people who will REACT accordingly to that rhetoric. After all .... it's only words. Right?
Words can be a force for hate, despair, and motivation for the masses to engage in negative actions. Words can start wars.
Words can be a force for hope, change, and motivation for the masses to engage in positive actions. Words can help end wars.
The world has listened to PO's words and felt hope that the US will be a force for positive change in the world, especially after the last 8 years. Words matter.
Congratulations to PO and the people who voted for his vision for this country. Whether or not the Noble Peace Prize was "too early" or not .... it wasn't our decision as Americans to award this prize. And quite frankly, it seems exceedingly bad taste and manners to complain about it to those who awarded it. Silly, "ugly Americans."”

“More precisely .... an anonymous McCain staffer leaked the phrase "going rogue" with respect to Palin's behavior near the end of the campaign. Tina Fey then took that phrase and incorporated it into the next SNL performance when she appeared with McCain right before the election.

“Mr. Eskow, you nailed the embarrassing "rebel in her own mind" script.
Palin's use of "Going rogue" is a convenient contrivance to explain away her mistakes and failures (like QUITTING as governor). Sounds a lot more rebellious and edgy than her psychotic, breathless babbling about "dead fish go with the flow" and "quitting is actually fighting" resignation speech.
Plus .... being a "maverick" has too many humiliating connotations ( such as "lost election," "Couric," and "Tina Fey.")”

If you go to an online dictionary, like http://dictionary.reference.com/ it gives the definition of "rogue" when its used as a noun: a dishonest, knavish person; scoundrel; when used as a verb:to cheat or uproot and destroy; when used as an adjective: abnormally savage or unpredictable disposition. Hmmm Sarah...........lets see, I guess you ARE a rogue, I just didn't think you would admit it.”

“Excellent post, AKM.
Judging by the frequency of "You lie" being hurled at the Senator, it's accurate to assume that Joe "You lie" Wilson's disrespectful behavior is now the new townhall standard. It makes me angry at Wilson all over again for the inevitable ripple effect amongst those who find it difficult to think for themselves.
Think about it. Joe Wilson took about 2 seconds to spew his spiteful negativity. It took Senator Begich about 2 hours to partially ameliorate Wilson's damage to civil debate in his (Begich's) own townhall.
Sen. Begich didn't deserve the disrespect shown by the attendees even if there are policy differences.”

“Excellent post. Thanks for your perspective.
Two observations:
1) Your reply to Vandergraafk contained a very significant truth: "The violence we see today has its roots in political economic issues ...." Historically, most violence (or imperialism) in the name of any religion was ostensibly for politico-economic reasons. This aspect is what's so cynical and hypocritical about the world's "great religions."
2) While I honor your and anyone else's rights to religious beliefs, the problems beyond the aspect mentioned above are with those religions which divide the world into "believers" and "non-believers" (who are henceforth destined for whatever ignominious hell as deemed fit by that particular religion.)
As long as there are human constructs which divide people into "acceptable" and "unacceptable" categories, I suspect that strife, misunderstanding, condescension, arrogant proprietary attitudes toward "Truth," and rationalizations of destructive actions toward "unacceptable" people in the name of those constructs will continue to plague our world.
Best wishes. I'm glad that you are a Muslim-American. America needs you and your voice.”

“250 words is an awful limit. Thus, some things have to make the cut. I would never leave out underlying social-economic causation. But, as many political economists would readily point out, religion has a way of mediating structural causes. To put it into the language of Marx: one cannot neglect the Uberbau (superstructure) when examining the fundamental contradiction of class warfare. It cannot have escaped anyone's notice that Pakistan is one of the most feudal societies in modern times. Benazir Bhutto - for all her claims to be a socialist - was a landlord. And the plight of many landless Pakistanis gives the Taliban an excellent launching pad to attack a pseudo-modern parasite class in Islamabad.”

Ms. Myss is correct that the GOP has hidden silently behind the extreme right-wing racists and their fear-mongering, allowing them to sow discord, suspicion, and LIES regarding health care reform. Indeed, there was a low point when reform was threatened because of this sabotage by the GOP.
But reform proponents have fought back .... by pointing out the lies and misinformation. The reasonable members of the public have caught on to the lies and are NOT pleased. Look at any polls regarding public opinion of the right-wing's tactics.
