“Ever notice how bigots always invoke STATES' rights to deny rights to individuals?”

conservgirl8 on Feb 14, 2014 at 17:33:54

“It's hardly bigoted to believe that the Tenth Amendment has meaning, or least it did for many years prior to the federal government, particularly the Supreme Court, expanding their power by use of the commerce clause, equal protection, etc., over the years, thereby allowing them to usurp powers away from the states. What was not enumerated as federal power, was to be left to the states and the people. The Framers felt it important that states were to have more power than was enumerated for our federal government, as they were closest to the people. Not so any more. It's not unusual for a Conservative to want to reprise the proper roles for the federal government and the state governments. That is not bigoted, but, it is ignorant for you not to know the original intent.”

“I must say, he sounds like he would be a good choice. He's a scholar, who is also conversant in contemporary culture. I like that, but I think I'd like to know a bit more about him. And, of course, simply the fact that someone is a scholar does not exactly mean they'll be the right leader. Witness Benedict and Rowan Williams, the former ABC of the Anglican Communion.”

“For online education to have a prayer of working for these populations, we would have to make sure each and every child had access to a good computer. Who's paying for it?”

commonsenseeverytime on Jan 30, 2013 at 09:25:05

“You don't think there would be money left over from school closure to purchase a 1,300 dollar computer for kids. Maybe you are right. If parent involvement is indicative of anything, they would probably pawn it for god knows what.

Charter schools all the way!”

Michael Steaphens on Jan 30, 2013 at 02:21:44

“Instead of $200 sneakers and smart phones I see many kids sporting, they could do as I did and buy a decent used computer.”

His photography in Iran was a highlight for me in that it brings us closer to a people who are supposed to be our enemy. Every time we connect with other people in the world, it brings us closer to true peace-- despite what our governments may prefer! Keep up the good work, Brandon!”

“She probably meant disordered eating, a sub-clinical but still harmful attitude in which eating has less to do with hunger and more to do with emotions. Disordered eating can also be something as simple as refusal to eat certain foods because they are "bad", to hiding the fact that you sometimes do eat them.”

The Art of Marginalia

“The death penalty is not justice. It is revenge on someone who has done a terrible thing (maybe). If you want to take revenge on people, great, but don't dress it up with pretty names. It's revenge.

I'm not entirely non-understanding, I'm originally from Oklahoma, and I have some connections with some of the people who died in the Federal bombing. When McVeigh was sentenced to death, part of me felt like that was a good thing; but I knew that McVeigh was not getting out of jail again, and that killing him was merely to make other people feel better. It wasn't going to stop anybody else from trying something like it again, or having the same sentiments that cause people to look on government agents (be they policemen or low-level federal bureaucrats) as the enemy, it is simply revenge! A real deterrent would be to consider what might cause people to do horrible things and what the rest of us might do to improve their world so they don't feel they have to or have the right to. Of course, that might involve critical thinking skills....”
