Dems Fire Back At GOP Proposals To Drug Test Jobless: 'You Pee In The Cup'

“Exactly. They tend to want more regulation and more government where it suits them and not for the good of the people.”

“I am not a sheeple thank you. If you mean to say that I am because I work for a company that drug tests or because I was in the military then I would like to know why that makes me a follower of anything but a paycheck and serving my country.

I do agree with you on the cannabis use in the respect that it should be legalized as alcohol has been. However, I don't think that you should be able to come to work under the influence of any drug including alcohol and cannabis. They both impair you.”

“I do agree with you, however my employer does blanket drug testing for those who never touch money or are around it. So it isn't so much about the skill set here.

I also completely agree that Alcohol is a majorly harmful drug and is a bigger problem.”

“We already pay for some government testing anyway. There are many federal jobs that require drug testing such as the Military.”

Skwib on Jan 7, 2012 at 18:04:04

“And I am fine with that because no one should be under the influence in a military position. If there is a strong ROI with incurring a wide drug-testing expense for government assistance, I would have an open mind to it. I want to see the data. If this is just another blatant attempt for conservatives to rag on the poor, then I don't want my tax dollars funding it. One would assume conservatives want that data analysis before getting behind costly government red tape, but we all know most of them are "conservative" in name only.”

Dems Fire Back At GOP Proposals To Drug Test Jobless: 'You Pee In The Cup'

Commented Jan 7, 2012 at 17:10:36 in Politics

“I agree with some of the comments about how this would get paid for. However, I work at a job that I had to do a hair sample test to get AND they do random drug tests.

There are many employers that say the number 1 reason they cannot fill positions is that people cannot pass drug screening.

I first say that the federal gov't should legalize marijuana and regulate it as they do alcohol. That would negate the drug tests all together for the substance of THC because that stays in your system longer and will be then legal to have on a drug test. Secondly, If someone wants to get a job, they have to be prepared to be drug free anyway as most jobs these days screen for them.

False positives don't stop corporations from drug screening. The statement that false positives range from 4% to 50% is such a huge margin that I would highly contest where those numbers came from.

Who here has had to do a drug test for employment? Respond and lets see. I want a study done on how many workers have drug testing at their jobs. Why is it such a travesty to drug test those that I pay taxes to support when they are between jobs? And don't say its because it is federal money and goes against their constitutional rights, I was in the US Military for 8 years and we had random drug testing all the time.”

jbyars on Jan 9, 2012 at 03:31:08

“We have hair analysis screening + random testing. Out of the 38 times or so I've been tested, 3 times came back with false positives. 9 times varied from damaged samples to....we lost it! That's roughly an overall 31% inaccuracy rate. I didn't do drugs at work, and stopped MJ altogether when they started this testing. Wasn't worth it...I took up drinking instead. So, false positive vs poor test procedure might explain the margin.

The travesty is the loss of your rights in the first place! Because you & I are tested does not make it right. I understand a company's need to cover their butt for insurance, and don't have a problem with testing after an accident, or even a bad decision that caused serious injury or death.

Scarier to me? You were in the military and still do not understand the loss. Your government refuses drug testing on themselves in the name of the same bill of rights. Doesn't bother you that the folks that send you to war are comfortable with 2 sets of rules, even though neither of you are considered a private entity?

What will you do when they DO get to a right you have a problem with? Setting another precedent here, sets the tone for something other than drug testing.

One other thing? Beware of what "employers say are the #1 reasons" of anything to the general public. Trust me.....they're not that open.”

butdoyou on Jan 7, 2012 at 17:37:26

“I'll say this, I'm currently looking for different employment. I've never done drugs in my life and I will not take a job that requires drug testing.

And the number one reason why employers can not find employees is because there isn't enough trained experienced people. Most business people want instantly productive people.”

lisalulu on Jan 7, 2012 at 17:21:43

“I don't have the skill set that would require me to be drug tested. Most are more concerned with credit and money handling (fiduciary).

I would have to be very desperate to take a job that mandates drug testing. I understand life safety issues and risk management but across the board drug testing is wrong.

Alcohol related illnesses and accidents is a much bigger visible problem.”

RickInMichigan on Jan 7, 2012 at 17:18:53

“Get this through your self serving skull: the vast majority of those unemployed have worked, have paid taxes, and are now in the worst job market of their lives. And they want a job. Bite us with your claim that you pay for those who won't work.”

“its nobodys bussiness what you put in your body , just like its nobody's bussiness who you sleep with and what you do behind closed doors. just like its nobody's bussiness who you pray too or who lives with you. can you do the job ? do you have experience ? do you have references, those are the only questions employers should be concerned with . anything else is private , unless your a convict guilty of mass murder or fruad.”

undrgrndgirl on Jan 7, 2012 at 17:15:57

“why you're a good little sheeple aren't you. i refuse to be drug tested for a job because what i do off the clock is MY business not my employers...also,there is also little evidence that cannabis use (the most frequently detected drug because of the way it is metabolized) impairs ones ability to do ones job...”

Skwib on Jan 7, 2012 at 17:13:36

“The difference between corporate testing and government testings is that I as a taxpayer will now have to pay for the government testing. I would like to see data showing that this added expense will be offset by even greater savings in the expense of government assistance. So far that data has not been presented.”

“Seeing as how the iPhone first came out in September of '07, and that Red v Blue state map was a combination of the past 4 years of presidential elections, how is there ANY way to compare these two maps? Seriously, Cooper Smith, the author, what were you really thinking? Just throw this out there to us and let us discuss? That reminds me of a comedy sketch from a while back which posed this question:

"Chickpeas are neither chicks nor peas... Discuss!"

Do you really think your readers are that ignorant here on HuffPo? Maybe the trollers are, but I could care less about whether Apples and Androids compare! I own an Android phone and an amazing 27" iMac and love them both.

As previously mentioned, I would have rather seen this TECH information compared to other TECH information like the coverages of AT&T vs. Verizon as they changed and Verizon obtained the iPhone. I am a Verizon subscriber and have to use my work phone that is AT&T and end up calling people on my personal cell because the quality of the connection ANYWHERE I have used it is so poor I want to pull my hair out.

Keep the Tech news on the Tech pages and the Political "Correlations" on the POLITICAL pages. Believe me, we like it that way.”

“@contrarian48 who tried to equate homosexuality to incest and had his post deleted:

I am not sure about the morality of it all, but it was my thought that incest was taboo and illegal specifically because of the ramifications of Inbreeding and the possibility of having children with deformities. There are many states that regard incest and even incest between adults to be illegal.

Equating a practice that can cause birth deformities to children and one that has nothing to do with having children is totally off base. What you are trying to do is to equate the ACT of homosexuality with the ACT of incest. That says to me that you have issues with homosexuality because the two are completely different.

I do agree with you on the point that there is definitely not enough information in this article to form any kind of proper debate about the specifics. However, you are not arguing specifics, you are arguing generalities. You cannot generalize a whole population of people specifically based upon your view that homosexuals are immoral. And so that says to me that you are the one with the bombastic biases.”

DessLoch on Dec 11, 2010 at 22:06:16

“inbreeding doesn't create deformities. Inbreeding simply exacerbates what's there genetically. So there is potential to breed children stronger than children coming from a more diluted genepool, there's also potential to breed weaker. It depends on the genetic trait. Before people understood science they assumed genetic deformities were a curse of inbreeding. Now they know it's just more likely only because both parents carry that particular gene, not a curse.”

“There are many cases of a couple being a serious genetic risk, that aren't incest. As far as I see the State makes no laws impeding these people from having children, no matter how certain and devestating the consequences, so the excuse that this is a public health issue of such magnitude that it must be made a matter of criminal law, carries no weight at all.
The arguments for homosexuality and for incest are exactly the same.
Marriage the argument goes, is not about children. All who love and are adult have the right to marry. This includes polygamists. There are no morally justifiable grounds for making any of this criminal. Except for some reason you don't accept that logic for anyone but same sex marriage?

I have no issues with people having their own private sexual lives. That doesn't mean that 2% of the population gets to redefine marriage. I support civil unions and that's all. I don't have to approve of homosexual behaviour to say that's your choice, but don't force your choices onto others.

I didn't say that homosexuals are immoral, unpleasant as I find their sexual proclivity. But I don't have to celebrate them either.

It it's public health that is the issue, gays are far more likely to suffer and transmit extremely serious and fatal disease such as AIDS.

As far as the topic goes? You and I know nothing of this young woman's relationship with her father, except that he has been arrested.”

Fame According To Me

Commented Jun 6, 2010 at 05:36:34 in Style

“Fame is a monster that always must be fed and will chew you up for cud the instant you do not satisfy it. Fickle fans and a volatile entertainment business are not something that I could ever base a career on. Actors go for months and even years without making movies. Finding something to do in the meantime that fills you up and makes you happy is the important part. Worrying about what other people think all the time just makes for a miserable existence because Pop culture changes, fades, molds, and adapts.

It is empty attention it seems. People do not really know you. They know the idea of you. Unfortunately ideas eventually become lost in memories.”
