Diabetes & Obesity: Why Conventional Medicine Makes Things Worse
Commented Dec 20, 2009 at 12:47:26 in Living
“Overweight, diabetes and obesity in the United States can be traced to two choices parents make:
(1) Not to teach their children about nutrition and ensure they eat nutritious meals (protein fruit and vegetables) every day.
(2) Not to ensure that they and their children exercise every day.
Once parents insist on good nutrition and exercise for themselves and their children and refuse to buy foods loaded with starch, sugar and corn syrup, the manufacturers of these foods will change to stay in business.”

“I would add salt to the sugar and fat cocktail food manufacturers mix up and market to children. Parents can only do so much and when kids get older, they will tend to follow peers more than parents, so we need better regulation of the industries involved--food and advertising.
Personally, I don't eat "manufactured" food nor did I feed it to my kids. We ate real food, made from fresh, whole ingredients, cooked by me. Nobody was fat and everybody was healthy. Today, however, they eat all manner of junk and feed their own kids the same. The power of marketing is enormous.”

“Sarah,
I love British history and the monarchy and plan to watch the movie once it is available on the internet. Congratulations on your putting it together and Princess Beatrice's small role in it.
A couple of other things:
I applaud how you have turned your life around and taken responsibility for your circumstances. 2010 will be a new year full of opportunities for you as you come back from your 2009 business crisis. You certainly have the stamina and character to come back swinging and more.
Of course you missed your husband, Prince Andrew, when he was away in the navy, but so do many, many military wives. You knew he was in the navy before you married him. Single or married, we are each responsible for creating our own lives and being fulfilled and independent without relying on our partners or spouses.
Have you thought that your attraction to the story of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert might be not only their great love, but also her unhealthy reliance on him?
Adopting the persona of a victim is always unattractive and debilitating: queen, duchess, commoner, navy wife, wife, mother, single or married. You understand that now, and I admire you for it.”

One of the most popular internet sites, which has greatly disrupted the profits of porn, because viewing on the site is free, is a walking advertisement for unsafe sex and the belittling of women -- young girls. That is where the government should step in -- censorship or not. Just take the site down. That costs nothing.”

What I assume from your comment is that you believe "just saying no" is an effective prevention measure to use in stopping HIV transmission.
First, you fail to consider human nature, especially for young people. Deprivation is often a key motivator in going towards the behavior that is being deprived.
Second, you obviously don't know the reality of what you proposed. While true prevention has proven over and over again to at least help on some level, abstinence has proven the opposite. There are plenty of teenagers getting pregnant all of the time who are taught to "just say no." as a result, they themselves have been a voice against abstinence only education.
I encourage you to become informed before making irresponsible suggestions.

FACE IT: Experience Is Back

“Love the sunglasses. Don't know what on earth they have to do with the value of experience.
Your examples are all fine and lovely, but have you been into an average office lately? How many people over 60 do you see in those offices? Very few, especially women. Almost none above 65. How many résumés of job seekers over 50 are sucked up by virtual databanks never to be seen again or chucked straight into the waste basket?
The notion of retirement was invented by politicians looking for a vote. It is now very much on the road to being passé -- too costly for society and, for most people, now an impossible goal.
It is up to these older workers to do what it takes to stay current, starting by creating on-line presences and making sure they exercise and eat healthy food; otherwise, they will surely be shunned. It is also up to executives and entrepreneurs in these age groups to hand down no-excuse initiatives for their hiring policies to be inclusive.”

Life is too short. It is time for you to get off those drugs. NOW -- with help.
Find a medical advocate who will help you get off these dangerous drugs in the proper way (cold turkey or gradually), find you proper nutritional counselling, and help you to find your passions to replace your dependency on psychotropic drugs.
It's time to swing on those birches again.”

“I reached the word limit. Basically, I wanted to add that the psychiatrists I have seen say there is no reason to want to go off the medications, the alternatives I look into, they are not at all familiar with and they have no intellectual curiosity about them, and they will even suggest increasing my levels of medication, even though I am stable right now. The main problems I have right now are from the medications themselves. Sorry to take up a double post.”
swingerofbirches replied on Dec 05, 2009 at 14:07:17
“Thanks. It sounds like you know me rather well. I've seen so many psychiatrists and have done so much research on my own for alternative treatments to help me withdraw from the drugs, alternatives like l theanine, inositol, taking lyrica or gabapentin or a cross taper over to valium (longer acting so easier to withdraw from).
But I live in an area of the country where every psychiatrist I have seen is a foreign medical school graduate, and I don't mean to sound xenophobic, but I can only guess that because it's a poorer part of the country, they are reimbursed by insurance less, and the less qualified psychiatrists are the ones who end up working here. I'm lucky if I can find one who spends a few minutes talking to me and I can understand them. I mean this sincerely: they do not have a grasp of the drugs I take as well as I do. They aren't aware of the basic dangers of these drugs, like me going off benzodiazepines suddenly would result in seizures. There's a disconnect between them and the reality of these drugs so large that it is like a twilight zone to me. I cannot understand how this is their specialty when it seems to be what they are so inept at in particular.
I'm afraid to try supplements on my own without a doctor who knows how to help me get off the drugs using supplements. But I have not found that doctor.”

“I think the point of the article is that some, but a few small number of children DO really need and benefit from these strong drugs. If a parent sees that thair child is possibly in this small number, yes of course, adjust their diet, supplement w/omegas-3 & 6, look into allergens and pollutants in their environment, etc... but get on the internet & do your own resreach, find a shrink you can trust and get the child help, get them on the drugs in a controlled and moderated manner. They are potentially harmful and should be used only when all else fails.
The problem is the quick-fix mentality of passing out these very strong drugs to young developing brains without doing that arduous base work first.
& I agree with you, the quick fix approach has ended up in GP's & others, untrained in child psychiatristy passing them out to a multitude of kids who really don't need them. ADD & ADHD has become an umbrella label for almost any behavioural or learning problem.”

“Poor discipline is NOT the cause of mental disorders and poor behavior in children. The cause is poor nutrition (inadequate omega 3, for example), and exposure to antinutrients (food colorants, preservatives etc).
The food/pharmaceutical companies are big making money from this. They cause the problem with their nutrient poor and additive-c ontaminate d foods, and then they make money from treatment by selling dangerous drugs to "fix" it. I wonder if they are aware of the connection.
Vaccines also may play a role in causing mental disorders in children. Vaccines cause brain damage. Oh boy, I know I am going to get a lot of flack for that one. But I think its true and can provide some suggestive research.”

Just because you weren't aware of people in school that were ADD/ADHD doesn't mean they didn't exist. Why should they tell you about their problems? Or did you have access to the student's personal records? Where's the proof of your assertions?”
