“HuffPost, when will you learn? Posting a story about these clowns is giving them exactly what they wanted. Not every dumb thing that shows up online needs a story written about it. Some stuff should really just be ignored.”

“What the hell is wrong with people? Why would she think getting pregnant now, when her marriage isn't even over, is appropriate? And I don't want to hear anything about it being 'unexpected'. At that age, women know how to avoid pregnancy--she got pregnant (by Simon Cowell, EW!) intentionally. What a mess.”

“Clearly she didn't say the word just 30 years ago since she's being sued NOW for discrimination. And I'm pretty sure the wedding where all the Blacks were waiters for a true plantation wedding happened much more recently.”

“Remember the statement - "don't believe everything you read" - I know it's hard as a Lib, but, try, try your best.  Just cause the story sounds good for your political beliefs, doesn't mean it's true - unless you are her attorney, then you would know everything, right?”

“But it's not really Blacks reacting, it's usually the media screaming 'RACIST!', and then Blacks feeling the brunt--we're called too sensitive, we're blamed for it (the most bizarre reaction yet), and ultimately the conversation somehow devolves into how we deserve it. And in reality, we barely bat an eyelash at such slurs anymore. We have to stop allowing the media to use race relations as a way of selling papers/getting readers on their sites.”

“*sigh* Why do so many people say "freedom of speech" and yet have no idea what it means? Freedom of speech is freedom of prosecution from the government for non-threatening speech--it does NOT protect against retaliation or consequences from businesses or people. If you truly think that you have the right to say anything you want without consequences, then I dare you to go to your boss and call him/her a jerk. Speech--like actions--have consequences.”

“Note from a Black woman:

Let's not allow the media to cloud the issue here, because they constantly use race-baiting to get viewers or clicks on websites. The true issue here is what sort of language was Deen using in the workplace. If she cracks a tasteless joke at home or with her friends, while I wholeheartedly disapprove, so be it. But if she's using any kind of language that's creating a hostile work envirornment, then she should rightfully be called out for it, as should any employer. Let's stop letting the media distract us from the real issue.”

Elroy Jetson on Jun 27, 2013 at 12:47:33

“Kudos ten times over. I do not have to like, unlike, or forgive Deen or her opinions. It is the persons who were the intended recipients of her criticism. Not a class of people, culture, or background group, but the individuals/employees involved and intent. It is inappropriate in any workplace setting for any bullying beyond respectful management regardless of race or background.”

Celiene on Jun 27, 2013 at 12:22:12

“Paula is just the latest 'shiny object'. And what she said 30 years ago is the other 'shiny object' distracting from the real issue - which is the lawsuit wending its way through the courts. Let's wait until the judgement comes - but, after all this bruhaha, will justice be served? Or will the 'shiny object' sway the jury? I did read the deposition of the complainant several months ago (it is online) and IF true, it's pretty damning. I wondered why there was no outrage when the suit was first mounted, and the complainant's testimony was first online.”

Malik Skyy on Jun 27, 2013 at 11:35:25

“I agree, the over hyping is getting to be too much. Collectively, many media outlets act as if they were taking their cues from Ivan Petrovich Pavlov himself. They say jump, we ask how high; they say bark, we ask how loud. There is a difference between what people say in the piracy of their own homes and what they say in the work place. No one, black or white, should be allowed are condoned for promoting or aiding and abetting the promotion of a hostile work environment. If we were punished because of what we said in private many of us would be in jail for a long time. If we were punished for what we thought there is no doubt that millions would be serving life.”

How is there backlash to something that no one heard/read in the first place? 20 bucks says the only people who were upset were the 3 people listed in the article. LMAO! Jokes aside, while I agree with Dash to a point, the issue is that Deen may have used this language around or towards her employees. There is no defending that.”
