Lobbying's New Frontier: 'Not Lobbying'

Lobbying's New Frontier: 'Not Lobbying'

Commented Jan 06, 2010 at 16:22:54 in Business

“did the SCOTUS recently rule that corporations had free speech rights to lobby? do you think our founding fathers would give corporations such rights? would our founding fathers consider lobbying free speech????”

Joel Redman replied on Jan 06, 2010 at 16:32:12

“No, they haven't ruled on that case yet.”

PocketWatch replied on Jan 06, 2010 at 16:26:37

“Ans: No. Corporation were given personhood through a supposed mistake that a SCOTUS clerk made in a ruling on the subject. Companies used to have to renew their charter periodically and to have to prove that they existed for the betterment of the community, among other things, to get renewed. Corporations can't vote, get drafted, d|e, have children, or even speak in the normal sense. That they have the status of a person is ludicrous.”

ShawnHanks replied on Jan 06, 2010 at 16:24:20

“When would you propose limits on free speech?”

“rancho cielo NM....700 MW solar farm...1 sq mile of solar modules....850 million dollars including building the german plant to make the modules.....world wide energy use....1 TW/year.....25,000 sq miles of solar modules....1 trillion dollars a year over 25 year life time of modules to power the world.....”

sethdayal replied on Jan 04, 2010 at 13:40:10

“New concept - the sun doesn't shine at night and is dimmer in the morning ,evening, and winter. Peak to average is is 25% for the American Southwest. Its about 15% for middle America.

Yes solar boiler is more efficient than rooftop PV but only desert areas prone to fog beside the ocean have enough water to keep them going.

Here are the real numbers

Sq miles = (700/640) *15000000/(600*.25) = 110K sq miles the entire land area of the state of Arizona.

Cost = 840*15000000/(600*.25) = $84 trillion without storage,+ $50 trillion grid upgrade to carry the load north + $100 trillion storage for foggy/cloudy days, sandstorms and winter

$10 trillion buying 10000 nukes worldwide is well within our industrial/financial capacity to build within the next ten years. It is paid for by and ends fossil fuel use, saves millions of lives every year from toxic radioactive waste from coal plants and ends global warming. Reasoning Democrats (most I hope) and almost all Republicans and Deniers will go along with it.

Or

$250 Trillion in solar boiler and plant not a chance Republicans or Deniers would go for it. Thirty years from now, if those silly scientists are right, most of the worlds coasts will be flooded, the gulf stream will have stopped, billions are dead and starving from toxic radioactive coal plant emissions flooding and bad weather. Europe and eastern North America will be frozen solid.

You pick.”

“cheney wreaked havoc on the world first by holding his secret energy meeting where it was decided how to raise the price of oil from 19 to 150 dollars a barrel.....how? first bush/cheney started hoarding crude in the salt grottos of louisianna to destabilize the oil futures and then they destabilize oil futures prices further by invading the oil rich middle east and racking up impressive price increases with every explosion....”

barksalot replied on Jan 02, 2010 at 17:20:44

“every house and building top in the US should have solar panels/modules.....germany does this and 70% of residential/building energy use comes from solar in that country with which has an average latitude of Boston.....total solar energy that hits the US each day could power the world for 20 years....and use lithium batteries and hydrogen for energy storage....”

MaximMaximus replied on Dec 31, 2009 at 13:08:47

“Let's see some data to back up you nonsensical claims. Some of us deal with this stuff for a living you know. The energy density provided by solar panels and the energy conversion efficienty of solar cells based on singl photon process are nowhere near to back up your claims. While I am in favor in implementing different kinds of clean energy technology whenever appropriate, I am not delusional about it. News flash: There is no substitute for fossil fuels. If you need a lecture as to why that is I'll give you one. All we can do is to extend the lifespan of the world's oil reserves. In addition, you seem to have forgotten that it takes energy to fabricate anything and everything, including solar panels. You don't think that semiconductors fall down from the sky, do you?”

“Does this information answer the question....

"It is necessary to supply a fast reactor with "fertile" material, but there is enough of that available in the nuclear waste piles that we are babysitting to last many centuries . Fertile material that can be burned in fast reactors is contained in by-products of past weapons development programs as well as in the waste from light-water reactors. The US is presently storing about six hundred thousand tons of uranium hexafluride, a by-product of nuclear weapons production. A reasonable assessment of the value of this material as fuel, if fast reactors were deployed as the energy source for power plants, is about $50 trillion. Yes, trillion. But it will take a thousand years to use all that fuel.”
