Paul Krugman: Raising The Minimum Wage Is 'Good Policy'

Paul Krugman: Raising The Minimum Wage Is 'Good Policy'

Commented Feb 17, 2013 at 20:54:19 in Business

“If you increase minimum wage business's will not be able to hire as many people and many companies would have to lay off people. Keep in mind that the largest expense to almost any business is labor costs. Also keep in mind that minimum wage jobs are jobs that basically take an untrained worker and train them. In essence, they are getting an education for free. When someone learns the basics, they are generally promoted to another position with a pay raise to go with it. Most people who earn minimum wage are teenagers that work part time. The minimum wage does nothing for those that earn higher than that standard. Imagine how many people companies would be able to hire if they could set their own salaries. That is more people getting on the job training for nothing, learning new skills that they can promote in the market place and get a better job. It also teaches them the basics of business which later on they can use to start their own enterprise.”

“History proves your thesis to be invalid. In the future, you might want to use 'facts' to back up your thesis, rather than words lacking substance.”

jaguarpete on Feb 17, 2013 at 21:06:59

“Unless the company is Walmart of McDonald's. There, you get hired at minimum wage and you stay at minimum wage forever. There is no real training, unless getting yelled at be the manager counts as training. Turn-over is tremendous, so the cycle starts fresh every time. But if these companies appreciated their workers and paid them a living wage, they would stay and help grow the enterprise, creating a bigger economy.”

“So you would be perfectly cosher with women walking down the street topless?”

Crisdean Wulver on Feb 17, 2013 at 19:25:43

“If I was the only person whose opinion mattered, I'd be all for it. :-) But from the point of view of ethics, everyone has the right to expect that certain standards of modesty are upheld in the public square. It's hard to know exactly where to draw that line, but it's also fairly common for most societies around the globe to object to the female nipple being exposed. I think that's reasonable. On the other hand, I think it's rather absurd to object to women breastfeeding their babies in public. That would be an example of a nipple being used for what it was designed for. And since modern humans have become alienated from many things that are perfectly natural for humans, I think it might even be healthy for society to allow women to breastfeed their babies in public. So I'm not opposed to ordinances against a woman showing her nipple, so much, as long as it's a misdemeanor. That would seem a fair punishment for being immodest in the public square. A felony is too much. A class H felony in Wisconsin is punishable by a $10,000 fine and 6 years in prison.   ”

“If you are wrongfully accused of killing a cop and there are multiple instances of people thought to be you getting shot before they identified, are you just going to come out with your hands up? The LAPD have shown absolutely no intent on taking him alive. Why would you think they would not shoot him on sight? In that circumstance, i am probably going to shoot back also. Bottom line, a person is PRESUMED innocent until PROVEN guilty. That is our justice system. The cops were wrong.”
