Vicki Kennedy On Oprah: I Can't Share Teddy's Last Words

“Exactly. Abraham Lincoln failed many, many times in his political career before he became President. Kennedy, despite his personal tragedies and failings kept his commitment to health care for all and other commitments when he could have quit like, say, Sarah Palin. The fact that he kept going despite his failings says a lot about the man. It's easy to keep going when life is problem free, isn't it? But, that is beyond the republican mind to grasp.”

“Three cheers for beating me to that big crux.
However, in the case of ultra-conservatives , hubris sadly tends to override reason.
Can you imagine what conservatives today would say of a president that suffered from major depressive episodes, like Lincoln did?
Ye gads!!! The forked tongues would be a flicker from all visible directions.
Because he was a Republican over a century ago. they're willing to cite him as an exceptional case. Were he to exsist today though, he'd be just another of the self-perceived RINOS that they so casually dismiss for not bending to tow their own bankrupt one-dimensional moral ideology.”

“What an interesting juxtaposition. The passing of Ted Kennedy and the announcement of Oprah's last year of her show. Kennedy had the most graceful and beautiful transition from life into what there is next with a year and a half notice. Then, there's Oprah, who is going to milk the next year for everything she can before her show 'dies' (ends). Every episode for the next year will be some kind of tribute and it will be mentioned day after day, week after week until it's finally over. Even if you don't watch her show, you won't be able to avoid the mention of it on other news and entertainment programs. It's already an old story but we've got a year to go.”

“I find people's relationship with technology amusing. Back in the 80s, everybody bought answering machines so they didn't have to answer their phones or could screen calls. Then came cell phones and people who previously were content with playing back recorded messages now HAD to answer their cell phones in the car, in church, when they were with other people and so on.
Then, not being satisfied with talking to others, they HAD to text their friends because that was the latest thing. But, we all know that most communication other than business use is usually unimportant or could wait like back in the 80s. Like the folks who say 'iPhones rule' or something just as stupid, it's not really the message that's important it's the gadget and people better know you have one. It's like a high end label on an article of clothing.”

In that case, I guess I could get good ratings if some company gave me stuff to give away on TV and I would look so generous.”

“General Motors didn't GIVE the cars away for free. They donated them to Oprah in exchange for the free advertising of Oprah giving them away. Oprah deserves credit, because she purchased the cars with the value of the free advertising she provided. And this type of thing has been going on TV for decades. The Price is Right has been giving out cars forever. And btw, behind the scenes Oprah's given hundreds of millions of dollars out of her own pocket that hardly anyone knows about.”

“I have never been a fan of Oprah's but it's been hard to put my finger on what it was given that she is generous with her resources. I flipped through her O magazine at the doctor's office recently and I've never seen so many advertisements, hence the weight. It seems that she has a real talent for marketing whether its books, personalities like Dr. Phil, merchandise and herself. She markets her weight loss when she's losing it and markets her weight gain when that happens all inside the context of 'see how forthcoming I am' or whatever.
Was her recent interview with Palin because Oprah was genuinely interested in her? It's a daytime talk show and not a political show. Or, was Oprah just interested in the 'big get'?
I guess I'm just put off by the all marketing in a culture such as ours that's so full of it everywhere you look; from ads before a movie starts to people selling their baby's potential for a brand ID on eBay to pop-up ads on the web. And Oprah is the queen of all marketing. I won't miss her but I'll be interested in seeing who replaces her: someone similar or someone who goes in a new direction.”

So what's the issue that she's skilled at marketing her product -- herself? Good for her. A great many people have reaped the dividends of her marketing and general business genius. And her personality and creative tv programming have made entertainment that much more richly enjoyable and informative.”

Most times I feel stuck just hating people like those and not being able to do anything about it and it's hard to consider just ignoring them because of what might happen if I'm not paying attention.
