“I've been disappointed by Obama so many times, that I'm not going to be surprised if he nominates Wall Street- and deregulation-loving Larry Summers. Despite the Senate Dems., this is who Obama is. And, I think it's going to be who Hillary will be, too, if she's nominated and elected in 2016. More of the same.”

“I hope they catch all the people who did these crimes and I hope the victims are alright. But, in Columbus' defense, we're a fairly progressive city that in general is, from what I read, very welcoming to the LGBT community. Plus, the Chief of Police is a gay woman, so I don't think there would be any systemic police bias. I'm not gay, and I don't want this to be happening, but please don't judge Columbus too harshly.”

The only problem is that Hillary seems to be more of the same Third Way, Wall Street-loving, 4th amendment-not so muching Democrat. Aren't there any FDR or LBJ type Democrats left? I'd even be happy with a moderate Republican from the old days. Aargh!”

And, remember: the best way to come up with something new and innovative is to take down all the posters of Einstein on your wall and make connections between what you read and what you're working on. I got the first part from something I read in a Guy Kawasaki book on the spirit at Apple when creating the Macintosh. It makes sense because if we all revere the greats then we'll be more likely to be constrained by their thinking. I always that was good advice from the early days of Apple!”

Bill Clinton At Deficit Summit: 'Paul Krugman Is Right In The Short Run'

Commented May 8, 2013 at 22:42:59 in Politics

“Elsinore,
I totally agree.  I think Krugman's opinions are really only on the fringe with the pundits and the people in Washington, those that he calls Very Serious People.  Stimulus while in a recession and an economic hole and then working on the debt when you get out of the hole makes sense, I think, to most normal people.   I always like the analogy that when you're in an economic hole, you spend some more money to buy a ladder and then once you're out of the hole and covered it up, you can stop buying ladders.”

Bill Clinton At Deficit Summit: 'Paul Krugman Is Right In The Short Run'

Commented May 8, 2013 at 00:22:26 in Politics

“I think Paul Krugman has always said that in the long run we need to work on our debt, especially by working on health care costs. Also, I'm real tired of Bill Clinton since he and his Third Way Democrats helped push through Wall St. deregulation in the 90s that led to the recent financial crisis. While I appreciate his public service, I think it's time to move on from the Clinton/Bush/Third Way era.”

Elsinor on May 8, 2013 at 00:56:56

“Krugman, at least in his NYT columns, has always said first get out of the recession and then deal with the debt. This is not anything close to a fringe opinion in the economics profession as most economists think "austerity" is counter-productive in a recession.

The US has by far the most expensive health care system in the world but delivers average results. Economists also know that lowering health care costs so that the US system is only somewhat more expensive than the second most expensive system in the world, a pretty modest goal, would have dramatic effects on the deficit situation going forward. I am skeptical that this will actually happen.”

“Good. I consider myself a solid liberal and strongly favor a single payer system, but I definitely support this as long as it's applied fairly and to everyone. I work hard at trying to eat healthy and exercising a lot and don't think it's fair that I pay the same premiums as obese people who order junk food every day in the cafeteria and never exercise. We all end up paying for their increased chances of diabetes and heart disease. To be fair, I'd be willing to also pay more because I also have certain unhealthy habits like drinking too much diet pop. This type of system will help us all be healthier and make the system fairer, IMHO. Thanks.”

Hillary Clinton Is Already Ruining 2016 For Everybody, Apparently

Commented Jan 30, 2013 at 23:51:24 in Politics

“I think Hillary Clinton has done a good job as Secretary of State, and I respect her for that and all her service, but I do not want her to run for President in 2016. We don't need another 4-8 years of a pro-rich and pro-Wall Street president. Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have been enough. The "Third Way" has sapped the backbone of the Democratic Party in fighting for the middle class. I think we need to move beyond the Clinton rule of the Democratic mindset. Also, in the 2008 campaign, I thought Ms. Clinton was a little too hawkish on the Middle East stuff. I'm all for a strong military and protecting our interests, but I thought she went a little overboard. I really want someone a little more traditionally Democratic like Howard Dean. Thank you.”

The 14th legitimizes the sovereign debt of the USA. It does not specify how it is to be manged.

My guess is Obama will do the right thing..even if it displeases keyboard Liberals.

But ...Liberals are more prone to lucid interpretation of policy and circumstances..so where are you coming from?”

Fiscal Cliff Deal Reached: White House, Hill Leaders Agree To Delay Sequester By Two Months (UPDATE)

Commented Jan 1, 2013 at 00:28:39 in Politics

“Hi.  I just noticed the Notifications button for some reason.  Good point on the permanent thing.  You're right that nothing is ever permanent.   On the not raising rates in a recession, I'd agree for the working poor and below because they may spend more of their income on necessities, but at some point, we're all going to have to start paying more.  I don't think we should make a habit of always cutting taxes in a recession because we're going to get used to it, and eventually, there will be more years with tax cuts than without.  The car companies got used to always offering 0% financing, and it didn't help them any.  I'd rather see the tax rates stay the same in a recession but add in much more temporary government stimulus, including work programs to re-build our infrastructure, educate people, etc. ”

“While I certainly don't think it's ideal, I guess this deal is okay. But, the one thing I worry about is the "permanent" extension of the Bush tax cuts for those making $400,000. Once taxes on the rich are raised substantially, the rest of us are going to have to pay higher taxes, too, in order to pay down the debt and pay for improved social safety nets, education, infrastructure, etc. We all need to do our share, and I just wish they'd raise my taxes! I wouldn't like it, but it's something we all need to contribute to.”

Kache on Dec 31, 2012 at 23:06:20

“I want to go back to the Clinton tax rates too. But, remember, Clinton did not set those rates during the worst recession since the Great Depression. Taking $2,000 a year out of the median household income would be the wrong thing with unemployment this high. And as for "permanent", come on Roger, this is the Congress, when was ANYTHING ever "permanent"? All that means is there is not a sunset provision like the 10 year sunset on Bush's taxes. Congress can change these rates anytime they have the will to. No session of Congress can prevent a later session from rescinding or changing any law it desires to change. And these rates will change as the economy improves, unless spend and borrow Republicans get elected.”
