Leach Incident Shows ESPN Ethics Stink

Commented Jan 4, 2010 at 18:07:23 in Sports

“I did infact use this today in a meeting...I called it the "adam james" attitude and everyone at the meeting knew what I was talking about- a slacker. As for the negative comment about Tech fans...why are they psycho? They supported the coach that brought them a ranked team last year and who brought football back from the dead at Tech. Tech students love their football team now. Leach made that happen. I would say an "average team" is a team that goes .500 each season and Tech has done much better than that under Leach. By the way, Tech fans do have lives-they are doctors, lawyers, biologists, chemists, engineers, teachers, TV journalists, actors, poets, architects, artists, musicians...most of the Tech football team leaves Tech with a degree-something Coach Leach worked hard towards. Unlike the University of Texas where less than half (around 40%) the players ever graduate.”

“I teach HS-you should hear what the coaches yell at the high school players in Texas. When my son played, he had a coach who would preach the Bible to the team for 5-10 minutes each practice. The rest of the practice he spent cussing them out! Sorry, but this seems to be the way it goes in athletics in Texas. It's accepted practice. I bet Adam James was cussed at a lot as a HS player. Let's face it, it may not be right but it seems to go with the territory and the kids know it. If you can't take it, don't play. Basically if you are playing on a scholarship, like James, the University is paying you to play football, so earn your keep!”

“Ditto on that. Football's pretty serious business here in Texas. Friday Night Lights is not just a movie (slash) tv show. And yes, I've heard a lot worse from JUNIOR High school coaches. Too bad (for Leach) that he's now going to get scrutinized more than our friend Tiger'rrrrr.”

Leach Incident Shows ESPN Ethics Stink

“I am sure that Leach's attorney will request Craig James' phone records and if they show all the calls to coaches that will confirm his story. As to the assistant coaches confirming Leach's story-I am not sure the university will allow that. It would appear that Coach Riley has already been told to back pedal from his previous e-mail comments about Adam James' work ethic. You have to remember that the coaches are still employed by the college. Perhaps under oath and with the phone records in front of them they would be forced to confirm the calls. This is a good story-well written.”

“The assistant coached may still be employees, but in the scope of an employment investigation - they are protected under whistleblower laws and given the scope of how this has unfolded, TT has already acted stupidly by not doing their own due diligence and conducting an actual investigation before they fired Leach to avoid the $800K - I would hedge my bets they aren't THAT stupid to then turn around and fire the AC's if they participate in an investigation...”
