“We can lower healthcare costs dramatically, but we would have to end the corruption of the drug companies who charge 20-30x more for drugs in this country. They also corrupt the medical schools and media (with advertising revenues). Their stranglehold must be broken
Eliminating the insurance companies would save 25-30% in administrative fees and paperwork and profit.
Obamacare addresses none of these and was doomed from the start to be a disaster. If it gets off the ground at all, just watch it crash.
We need a single payer system copied from other countries where they have their act together.”
“I'm really confused. Can't the medical device companies just pass the net cost of the tax on to insurance companies who will pass it on to the government deficit and patient copays? Why do they even care?”
tdwfl on Oct 15, 2013 at 17:16:41
“What they don't like is that it's a tax on sales, not profit. You could have a company that is barely getting by and this would shut them down. Then you're left with less innovation.”
LewDan on Oct 15, 2013 at 17:05:37
“No. Because ACA also changes the way payment to providers is made, making padding bills harder. And the public exchanges create real competition, and price pressure. One of the main goals of ACA has been to begin to impose curbs and market controls on the uninhibited pricing medical service providers have enjoyed in order to reduce costs, for everyone. But especially for Medicare.”
SoCal John on Oct 15, 2013 at 17:04:11
“They already don't care. this 2% tax is on devices that cost them $50 to make while selling them for $2000 (just an example). This is purely about House Republicans wanting to be able to declare a win by being able to say the defunded a portion of the ACA. Purely Tea Party politics.”

“There should not be a one size fits all minimum wage. Maybe a graduated scale for under 18 years of age,18- 21 and 24+. At $9 hr, it will be hard for high school and college age kids to get jobs. Small businesses will find it inflationary to pay that kind of money for minor chores. Maybe the minimum wage should be set by types of employment. Plenty of room to fight on that! One size fits all is crude.”

“It's time for reasonable Republicans to tear up the Grover Norquist antitax pledge and tell the Tea Party where to go. We need a three party system with two Republican parties: those who reason and put country first and Grover Norquist's brain dead ideologues”
“While the NRA lives in its fantasy world that owning guns saves us from tyranny, we have lost control of our government to tyrannies.
Through bribes called campaign contributions the drug companies charge us anywhere from 10 to 100 times what other civilized nations pay for drugs. Tens of thousands die yearly from adverse drug reactions. They are also allowed to advertise drugs which creates demand for drugs that may not be the best to take or even necessary. This advertising revenue also has a controlling effect on news media who could lose advertising if they say anything critical of drugs or the drug companies. Drug company money pays for political advertising to help bought off candidates win.
Similar things occur in the rest of the health care industry and Americans wonder why we are in a cost runaway crisis. This isn’t limited to just the health care industry. The factory farms that produce our meats are not limited by any animal cruelty laws nor are they restricted from the overuse of antibiotics that will someday produce antibiotic resistant bacteria. The list goes on and on.
We have no democracy. We have a moneyocracy.
If the NRA members want to defeat tyranny, they would be better off working for laws and constitutional amendments limiting campaign contributions and other corruption.”
“For profit is one thing. For robbery is what the drug companies work for.”

“and the "grievance " system is next to useless. When these drugs go generic insurance companies only pay for the generic even if it is ineffective. nothing better than a psychotic patient on a drug that doesn't work but its "cheaper"”
“Since Obama was first elected, the Republicans haven't really gone along or compromised on anything much. They forced the Sequestration by refusing to raise the debt ceiling then following it up with no deal with the Super Committee. Where is this optimism about a deal in 2013 coming from? What is it based on?
This is an ongoing political civil war. The Conservative Republicans are like Japanese Kamikazi pilots. They would rather destroy the country than give up their beloved Emperor Grover Norquist and their nutcase ideology.”

“FYI, most hunters don't and wouldn't hunt deer with an AR-15 because the bullet is too small and underpowered.
Your average deer rifle (.270, .308, .30-06) are significantly more powerful than your average AR-15.”
“It comes from donations to NRA backed candidates and more importantly during primaries where about 20% of registered voters vote. There they mail out postcards to NRA's to vote for the NRA backed candidates and these fanatics do just that. All Republican politicians fear them.”
“Japan has a debt to GDP ratio of 239% while ours is about 100%. We have a serious problem, but Japan shows how much wiggle room we still have. Yet, the Tea Party forced the Sequestration cuts on us. This is our most serious threat. Now they refuse to raise any taxes as part of balanced compromise solution. They are saboteurs.”
SpeakupNation on Dec 21, 2012 at 10:47:22

“If Connecticut already has a ban on assault weapons, how did Nancy Lanza get hers? Obviously, if she was stopped, her son would not have had access to it. He allegedly used that to shoot off door locks to get into the school. Would those handguns have been able to open the door? Rifles are much more accurate at distances. He used it with that benefit. What kind of person wants an assault rifle? To defend his/her home from what?”

“My Dad will be 74 next month. He lives on less than my very modest mortgage payment. He never believed he'd see a loaf of bread for more than $7 and diesel fuel would cost more than regular, let alone over $5.00 a gallon. I have to say, he does well because he has parents who went through the depression when they were young. If only our government would learn how to be frugal and save for a rainy day.”
“Maybe an answer to gun murders is a public education campaign to inform the citizenry how dangerous guns really are. They can be bought to kill. They can be stolen to kill as did Lanza. Children can access them and accidently kill themselves or others. Others can steal your guns(Lanza again) and kill others with them. If you are stupid enough you can even kill yourself or friends with "unloaded" guns. Only on rare occasions are they actually used in self defense.
There is one very painful fact of life. Mass murders are almost monthly events in the US. Japan, the European nations and all the rest of the industrialized world rarely have them. One big difference between us and them is the widespread easy availability of guns. People in these countries don’t want guns and we shouldn‘t either.”
