Reshaping the business of social change

“I believe many of you are missing the point here. Monique Villa is talking about shared value and the idea of going beyond charity per se. I am a strong endorser of that. I believe the Thomson Reuters Foundation has done an amazing job. Their legal platform has helped an NGO I worked closely with and without the connection they established that NGO could never have got the legal help they needed! Keep up the good work Monique!”

“Hi WillWells, I understand the shared value model. I also work in the not-for-profit sector. Half of my original comment didn't get posted. Shared value models could work if they are if partnerships of equals were possible but in my experience there is always a funder to fundee power dynamic. Business and charity have always intertwined - all aid is tied somehow. Ms. Villa's blog seems to describe a very top down decision-making process. I wonder to whom she is accountable for the decisions and outcomes - shareholders or the organizations with whom the Foundation shares values. I do not doubt that some of the activities have great outcomes for all involved but the method of getting there does not seem that new - there is a long tradition of business people deciding what is best for others. Perhaps I am misreading. Maybe in her next blog Ms. Villa can describe how she engages partners in decision-making and how the Foundation is accountable and transparent in its dealings with the not-for-profit sector. I look forward to reading that.”
