“1st Did you completely gloss over my comment about ethical corporate WalMart was failing at it?
2nd Ok so you have Mom and Pops, but they do not really impact the supply lines when it comes to manufacturing practices for the bulk of goods produced in the world. Only big chain retailers have the kind of pull / purchase volume necessary to dictate changes in such a complex system. The whole "local produced" crap effects less than 3% of the market, it simply doesn't have impact.”
“While I am appalled by Walmart's employee treatment, environmental practices and overall corporate culture, you're dream of Mom and Pops died with the 90's (and was dying since the 80's). It's truly unsustainable, inconvenient and expensive. The best solution is to get new blood in the corporate system, get people who believe in ethical corporate hood in charge, with S class businesses, where profit margin and share holders aren't the final goal of the company, but rather the corporate mission statement and charter goals, which should list their socio economics plans as well as their positive contribution to society. A single large entity can accomplish much (and as Walmart has shown ruin much) much quicker than a parade of Mom and Pops. It's what's best for the consumer and America. Only a corporation can influence manufacturing practices through bulk purchasing, if they made for instance recycled plastics or ethically made cotton / cocoa as a requirement for their distribution (and they are consuming 30%+ of the market, manufacturers, harvesters, ect will bend to their demands. To spell out a cliche, "With great power, comes great responsibility."”

“I disagree. Here in Seattle we have THOUSANDS of "Mom & Pop" operations that continue to not only survive but thrive because, in part, we do not allow Wal-Mart into the city. We allow big-box retailers like Target, Fred Meyer's, etc but only so long as they meet the conditions set by the city like fair pay, benefits, etc... They aren't hurting one bit and neither are the Mom & Pop shops which specialize in products or services. Easy Street Music is a cultural icon out here, as are Dick's Burgers. Look at how another Seattle company is upping the game for employees across the country just for slinging coffee! Yes, I'm talking about Starbucks but the same can be said about Costco. See, up here, we "get it". If you take care of your employees, they will take care of your customers and you. It's a win-win.”

“Read about Community Coops. They are gaining ground.”
“Actually I believe that's the product of socialization. What is considered "normal" is societal based. Homosexuality is not. However the tolerance of those who are is very much based on upbringing, beliefs, social mores, ect. There have been societies in the past that were perfectly fine with homosexuality. Greeks (Sparta actually had it the desired origination and when were viewed primarily as a means of reproduction. It got to the point where the woman worked in the fields to get the figure of a man, cut their hair short and tried to essentially make the transition from the battle field to the bed room as easy as possible) and Romans especially (until you go to their downfall with Constantinople and Christianity mucking it up, destroying libraries, asylums and skinning female mathematicians alive with broken pots and finishing it off with burning her alive inside her own library...”
“No. They should be held accountable for their bigotry. Name should be spoken, known and ridiculed for the jerks that they are. Only when it's something that could be taken out of context does such things backfire, however this is obviously not being taken out of context. There is no whole statement where this is an excerpt this is a tweet. Their opinion is there with no filter. So if that's their opinion, let it be known and judged by all.”
“I'm an atheist and I do not have an issue with the nativity scene being on Government property, as long as they filled out the paper work and alternative displays, can be erected across from the scene or in an equally visible area. If they already have a the flying spaghetti monster images hanging up, I feel that the county is being fair with this display. It's about representing the community. The community wanted to put up a nativity display and another part wanted to put up images of the flying spaghetti monster and this guy wanted to put up beer towers. I fail to see how this violates anything. It would only be a violation if they said no to one of the groups, but yes to the others. There is no favoritism here, that's what's important and the spirit of the law.”

“So they should be required to represent every religion, not just the top 40. Anybody know how many there are, including FSM?”

“"as long as they filled out the paper work and alternative displays, can be erected across from the scene or in an equally visible area"
In this case, there is no "they." I linked to a local story from October. The city didn't want the Festivus pole again, or any display other than what they wanted, on city property, so they passed a special law that the only displays that could go up were those the city erected themselves. So the city itself erected this Nativity and only this Nativity.
" I fail to see how this violates anything."
I think that's because this story only have some of the facts, and you've missed something important that IS in the story. The Flying spaghetti monster is not here. This is the city of Deerfield Beach. The Flying Spaghetti monster is at the Capitol. Deerfield Beach only has a Nativity scene, and they passed a special law so that they could put it up and exclude others. .
They could have allowed other displays and they could have chosen a secular display, but they passed a special law so they could only put up a Christian display.
It's Florida, so anything could happen, but I think Deerfiled Beach put itself in a legally precarious position here.”
“So nothing important than? What you talk about pointless crap like the weather and "sports". The downfall of America, no one talks about things that actually matter anymore.”

“Those few days a year that family gathers? Talk about family, the kids, sports, you don't have to live politics 24/7.
BTW- How many days does the congress, the people that should be talking politics have off ??”
“You do realize that the entertainment portion NBC has nothing to do with the news portion? They are completely separate entities. Now while Fox "news" station has its entertainment and news married together, it also has Fox Spotlight and Fox programming that does a variety of shows that have nothing to do with its news or it's biased message crafting, unless under some bizarre mind set you've decided that Family Guy, the Simpsons and American Dad are pro-right wing and pro fox news (considering they literally make fun of the biased nature of their news network on those shows, I highly doubt it.)”

“So which entity would make a documentary which showed the unvarnished truth?”
“I think you mean Gryphindoor, based on the values and ethics of the parties involved. The liberal, fighting for the under privileged and the good of all, while the lying, anti-minority (anti-muggle) and self serving Republicans would be much better representative of Slytherin.”
“They said the same thing about Chinese people, Irish and Hispanics at different times in our countries history. Your statement didn't hold true then and doesn't hold true now. Like it or not those people helped build this country just as much as you or I.
I think most of us got the fact he was talking about illegal immigrants there, btw, it was a rally against immigration reform after all. He still isn’t right.”

“Illegal immigrants: the new French, Irish, Jews, Chinese, Blacks, etc.”
“So you're circumventing the reason some of us voted to legalize weed in WA (the increased tax revenue to help fill out state's deficit)? Well I hope they find these unlicensed growers of yours... Or better yet, charge you with the same crime people can be charged with for buying their cigarettes on a indian reservations to avoid taxes. You know there is a legal method for you to by your friend's weed right? They "donate it" to a despensory who then "donate" funds to their growing operation and then the sale price is taxed.
Gov. happy, your happy and your friends are happy, but then again maybe you're a hypocrite who says they want the Gov. to provide XYZ, but when it comes to paying your nickel, you object to the small amount of tax they'd tack onto your final price.”
“Maybe he's trying to become a large enough share holder to direct the companies actions. Maybe he's being a smart business man, knowing the that the tumble in their stock due to their recent accidents is only temporary, going to make a pretty penny on their rise, sell short and then use the money to campaign against them. I see no issue here.”
“SO? I still don't want someone attacking me with a hammer or knife. If I have a gun YOU could not rape or kill me at kife point.
These countries UK and Australia had an INCREASE in violent crime after guns were banned from law abiding citizens. So there are plenty of countries for you gun haters to move to.............adios.”
“Oh wait, I get it, it's because you don't want the hospital in the neighboring city to know you already have a prescription for your oxycodone and that this one is just for your street resale program, ok I get it now.”
“What is wrong with looking into your medical records? If you're a schizophrenic I don't think you should be able to buy a firearm. Seriously, how paranoid are you? What? you don't want people to know you have blood pressure medication or something? What the hell is with people being so paranoid about their medical records. That patient rights non-sense just added more headache for me whenever I move and want to get my records transferred. If you really cared about your own and your families health you would support a unified database so wherever you are they can know your medical history and treat you accordingly.”
“Ummm perhaps you misread the votes. If all the democrats votes yes on this, (only 5 didn't) and all the republicans voted no, it still wouldn't have passed. Democrats don't control the senate, that's why nothing has been done this term. You can look at the picture of the votes, it's practically down party lines with a handful of exceptions, yes half blue no half red.”

“Not a good business model and interrupts the goal of mass production of food. To do so would double the required cooking apparatus, labor required, storage, cost of ordering and add a risk that not all of both would be sold and thus additional waste would be generated. No they did the right thing here.”
mrdarklight on Apr 29, 2013 at 15:49:44
They already have white rice, and all the apparatus for cooking it, on premises. Cost increases would be minimal at most. I think they're going to find that the cost of customers who don't come back because their rice doesn't taste good will be much higher.”
