Mt. Rushmore Site Should Be Returned To Indigenous Native American Tribes, U.N. Official Says

Mt. Rushmore Site Should Be Returned To Indigenous Native American Tribes, U.N. Official Says

“Yes! This is wonderful- even though I am sure they won't get Mt. Rushmore, it is a big enough claim that they can maybe have some public acknowledgement by government and church about all the wrongs that have been done to them. This country NEEDS to publicly accept what happened and to do something to make reparations- but the first step is acknowledgement and acceptance.”

“We are not the ones who did anything to them and they are not the ones who it was done to. Besides it was a war and we won! Get over it!”

“Obama is still breaking treaties as an example 2 or 3 years ago after telling the Chieks of the Seneca Tribes he would not do anything to ban the sale and shipping (mail order) of the tribes main source of income he signed a law stating you could not mail order cigerettes any more. Of course there was an appeal but the Seneca's lost. While I agree with you 100% there is no going back. I am adopted I have no idea what kind of blood passes through me. But it doesn't matter to me. black or red or just plain white I am who I am and I try to be a good person. We can't take back that there where slaves. we can't take back that Indians where cheated and pushed off their land, no more then the Indians can take back the kidnapping and brutal slayings of the white. It happened and needs to be let go so that we all can move forward. As long as anyone holds on to that kind of past there will always be problems.”

“Actually, our country was not founded on "legal immigration." It was founded on the slaughter, rape and destruction of the Native American societies. I think that says something about why we do what we do.”

“This IS a racial issue. Redskins is offensive, as many people stated, because the indigenous people of the United States are not gone, like the vikings (though I'm not particularly fond of this mascot either). They are not extinct and holed away on reservations. Native people live all over the U.S. and are U.S. citizens. Using them as a "mascot" dehumanizes them to equal something like a dolphin, or a raven. Every time an indigenous person has to see themselves and their culture portrayed that way, it is hurtful and demeaning. By Snyder saying he will "never" change the name, he is indicating that as a member of the dominant society that oppresses the indigenous people, he can do whatever he wants with no consequences. It would be the equivalent of saying the Washington Palefaces, and having an effigy of a white guy with a flat face and huge eyes on all of the merchandise. The image itself is stereotypical, since the Native man pictured has large hooked nose, "war paint" and an Eagle feather. The Eastern Woodlands tribes were never "warriors"; they were farmers, hunters and traders who went to war as a last resort. There were no "Indian braves." These societies were actually matrilineal. So the entire founding of the idea for taking the name for the team is based on false images and stereotypes. No matter what the "original intentions" were, they are offensive NOW and the mascot is racist.”
