“Thank you for sparing us the glowing reviews about Meles' supposed economic miracle in Ethiopia. As you note, Meles, as a member of the Tigrean minority group, was educated on a scholarship in Ethiopia. yet when he took power (as a leader of the Tigrean People's Liberation Front), he implemented a national policy by which all meaningful economic, political and military power were concentrated only in the hands of this Tigrean minority (less than 6% of the population). Never before in Ethiopian history had such blatant ethnic apartheid been seen. You can not have economic growth in a multi-ethnic society where only 6% have access to opportunity!

Meles was clearly the darling of the West, but he was a curse on Ethiopia and I welcome his demise. Yes there is risk of instability now, but that's what happens when a dictator refuses to build democratic institutions that will outlast him. His death was nothing short of divine intervention as far as I'm concerned, and I pray to the same God for a brighter future for Ethiopia!”
