“Business loans? Are those the kind you can get forgiven by declaring bankruptcy? Because I'm kind of stuck with $40K I can't ever pay back, not even if I let the government take my house, car, and computer.”

“AAasterling....I'm in the same boat your are. $50 grand in debt on student loans, and unemployed. At my age I will never be able to pay off my loans in my lifetime. In hindsight, I wish I had used that money to start a business rather than waste it on a degree and teaching credential.”

“I understand, I'm in the same position right now.”

“See, that works if you can actually GET a job as a janitor. When even McDonald's and Wal-Mart refuse to hire you, there's a problem.”

“maybe you should go into the oil business.”

“Yep, sounds like me. Graduated in 2010 and haven't been able to find a job that's lasted for more than 6 months. Granted, the degree I have (Geology) could probably get me a career with an oil company, but that's really really not something I want to do. I'd hoped to get into grad school and study paleontology, but when that didn't happen, I discovered that a Bachelor's degree in Earth Science is fairly useless in most fields.”

“I graduated in 2010 with a bachelors degree in Communications and also haven't been able to get a job that lasted longer than a few months. Best of luck to you.”

“there are so many jobs for geologists in Australia that pay 100 k plus. try that.”

“You might have to take a job that isn't something you really want to do, and buckle down, get the experience, then work elsewhere. Life does not always hand us what we WANT to do. But if people don't start working at SOMETHING, even if the salary is lower than desired, or it is in a field that they don't particularly like, it is likely they won't get a decent job ever. Get the experience at the oil company. Then move elsewhere when you have a track record and get over "that's really really not something I want to do."”

“I have a graduate degree in Classical Antiquities and have never worked in the field. But I have always had a job, and the time I spent at the university was well spent. Many of the people I work with who had more "appropriate" job training are good enough at what they do, but otherwise have very little understanding of almost anything.”
