“Let me guess, she also thinks that men prefer wives who can't: vote, own property, become doctors, wear pants, etc. because she is obviously about 200 years old. If republicans think this kind of rhetoric will appeal to the female voters they need, they should get used to having about as much political relevance as the segregation party.”

“LOL!

Adam, you'd be surprised (well, I was) by how many American men prefer wives who can't vote, own property, wear pants, etc. There is a whole vocal contingent of them, easily found on religious, especially fundamentalist, forums.

They are on their way out, of course (and not a moment too soon), but they still exist and exert their toxic influence on others, sadly susceptible ones.”

“It's not just the Christians who have an outlandish and unprovable concept of creation, so does FOX then have to give every world religion equal time to "educate" people about how they think we came to exist? I doubt even christians would argue for that. In reality they just love to whine about how the world is leaving their nonsense behind. Want to be a good person? Be a good person then. You shouldn't need a bunch of stories to keep you from killing people. And if you do, you're what we call a psychopath. Congrats.”

“It seems like this situation could have been very easily diffused had Dunn just gotten in his car and driven away instead of going for the gun. It's not like he was in a position to defend his home, nor was he being advanced upon in a location where he was alone and without options. He could have gone back into the store and told the clerk what was happening. Or he could have just, you know, driven away in his car that was sitting right there. I get that a lot of white people of a certain age get absurdly angry about the behavior of young people who are different from them, but that hardly constitutes a reason to start shooting at them.”

“When is someone going to explain to conservative christians that sex is a normal adult behavior and not something that everyone is desperately trying to avoid in order to escape the wrath of a vengeful god? Most people realize that while you may enjoy having sex, you don't necessarily want to have a baby every time you do it. Birth control isn't about condoning peoples sinful urges, it's about making responsible family planning choices, and that's something that benefits us all.”

“Perfectly stated. thank you! Unfortunately, in almost every religion on the planet, there is some statement that outlaws having sex without the purpose of procreation. Religious leaders all over the world seem to think that God made sex pleasurable only to force us to make the "sacrifice" of not acting on this pleasure unless we plan to have a baby from it. Religions make sex a sin, and sometimes sexual sins are on the top of their sins lists, even above murder.”

“The thing that has always, and will alway disturb and fascinate people about the films that Scorsese makes is that he does not make movies about good guys or bad guys because he realizes that the world is not populated by good guys or bad guys, but rather a conglomeration of those two. The fact that he doesn't judge his characters makes many viewers uncomfortable because it give the impression that the director condones the character's actions. But isn't it more fun when it's not black and white; right and wrong? Is Travis Bickle the good guy because he saved Jodie Foster, or the bad guy because he planned to kill a presidential candidate? The answer is: both. And that makes people unsettled when they leave the theater because they have to keep thinking about it. It takes courage to leave that question on the viewer's mind; to not know how they will feel about what you've made. That's when art gets good: when people take it with them because they have no choice. It's not everyone's taste, but then, art isn't for everyone.”

“All political and religious vitriol aside, in a legal sense, if a group wants to justify or impose a ban on something, they must first and foremost show cause for potential injury. As in, how does your gay marriage impair my life in some real way. The reason a right leaning SCOTUS was unable to uphold Prop 8 or DOMA is because the plaintiffs in these cases were unable to show that any injury was incurred by allowing gay marriage. See, you can't ban something just because it makes you mad or you think it's a sin. Utah is welcome to tie up the courts trying to make this a states rights issue, but the federal government ie. SCOTUS has already set the legal precedent for no injury, and therefore, no ban. The federal government can't force Utah to recognize these marriages until it is argued in front of SCOTUS, but if Utah tries to do that, they will face the same situation that CA did when Prop 8 was found to be unconstitutional. There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to states rights as far as this issue. If states had sovereign power that superseded the federal government, they would not be states, they would be different countries.”

Political Poetaster on Jan 10, 2014 at 17:09:52

“Excellent post. It seems to be that the people who yell the loudest about state's rights only yell when it's something they have a personal ideological stake in. Federalism was irrelevant to the U.S. Supreme Court when it came to allowing Florida to finish counting its ballots in the 2000 presidential election. And the state's rights lovin' Utahans sunk an ungodly (pun intended) amount of money in California's anti-gay marriage initiative. You can't have it only your way, folks.”

It's like how you can't have legal car insurance that only covers damage to the other driver's headlights. We have a minimum acceptable coverage level for car insurance, why not health insurance? “So we should only make movies about nice people or bad people who get what they deserve because the daughter of a really bad guy got upset? Is that really what you think? Apparently she needs someone to blame other than her father and Wall St. in general so she directed her anger at a movie, but doesn't that seem a bit short sighted? The fake outrage about this is ridiculous. Where were these outraged people when Scorsese made Goodfellas (another film about bad guys who kind of get away with it) or Casino? The difference is that these days we love to get outraged but we rarely direct it at anything relevant.”

And also, shall we name all the countries who aren't our allies who definitely have nuclear weapons? We aren't threatening any of them with war simply because they have nuclear weapons. If we no longer want to be the world's policeman, which is something that both parties say they want, then we have to actually stop doing it, and try to engage countries who don't like us through diplomacy. Then maybe once we stop threatening them all the time, they won't hate us so much. Just think about how much we like it when someone threatens us. “The subtlety that many pundits and politicians and Americans in general don't understand is that, for the most part, we have a capitalist economy and a socialist "society". They are two different things and they have been for a very long time. This is why we have public schools and police departments, while at the same time promoting a "free market". We just kind of ignore the socialism in our every day lives because we tell ourselves that we are a capitalist country. What we ignore is the fact that the capitalist aspect of this country is only applicable to our economy. This is the result of a capitalist "society" and it's terrible and frightening, and no one except for the most extreme and deluded libertarian really wants it because it would create an aristocracy that would quickly destroy us.”

Obama's $10.10 Minimum Wage Would Fundamentally Change America

Obama's $10.10 Minimum Wage Would Fundamentally Change America

Commented Nov 8, 2013 at 21:07:44 in Business

“I think the problem is the value we've decided is appropriate for an hour of work. The minimum wage has increased at a far lower rate than inflation. This creates an imbalance that vastly favors the employer since inflation enables him to sell his product for more, generating more profit while not passing that profit along to his workers, thus enabling them to buy more things. The fallacy is not seeing that while a hamburger has doubled in price, the wage paid to the person cooking it has only gone up 30%. In that sense, we have simply been undervaluing an hour of work and allowing stock prices and profits to rise as a result. Things like government assistance shouldn't, theoretically, be necessary if people were paid enough to live on. If politicians agree that employers don't need to pay their workers a living wage that reflects current costs, then they will have to take the responsibility to feed these people. And no, I do not think all wealth is ill gotten or should all be redistributed. I think everyone should be able to have the goal of having wealth, and that requires that some have more than others. However, if you work hard, you should be able to provide a life for yourself without government assistance. That should be a right that comes with hard work. And capitalism does have a moral component. See: The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith, an ethical philosopher not an economist.”
