“Would Faulkner have been a literary genius without alcohol? Would Coleridge have been as brilliant without his pipe? Put another way, does the drug fuel the artist or does it just filter the muse?
Tuesday is my 22 yr anniversary in recovery (24 Feb 1988). I didn't know if I'd write another song or interesting piece of prose if I quit drinking and drugging, but I had to either quit or die and I wasn't ready to leave just yet. In many ways my writing has gotten much better and my performing has certainly improved. I'm certainly no literary or songwriting genius (far far from it) but I'm a much better person now for having stopped killing myself.”
