“I'm 46, lost my career in 2010, did a ten month temp job that ended last June, and have been unemployed since. This guy is me!

I'm taking that $100,000 college degree and tossing it in the trash. I just shelled out $4K to get a Cdl license so I can try to get a job driving a truck. And I am not unhappy about this decision. It's just another job.”

xfrizzlefrazzlex on Jan 28, 2014 at 14:33:34

“You got that right. I think the years of going to school in an effort to find the "perfect job" are long gone. All you should think of is a paycheck, not how "perfect" the job is. Quit placating employers who have no integrity or loyalty to their employees. Don't try to do extra work to get a promotion. Don't work 80 hours a week to show them what a hard worker you rare. Work 40 hours a week & enjoy the rest of your time with your family, friends, or doing what you enjoy. Time is the only thing we can't get back in this life, & it's not worth working yourself to death.”

“Good luck to you, I hope it works out. I`m over 60, and worked all my life driving trucks and operating equiptment. My CDL exspires this year, because I`ve been out of work so long in the industry I always worked in, that I can`t afford the new Federal regulation of the Medical certificate verification at the DMV medical unit. So they no longer allow you to keep all those endosements and such, while waiting for work. So they will now pull my "class A" license. To stay alive, I`ve been forced into washing dishes at minium wage, and the last 6-7 years or so [I was 50 when the economy went into the toilet big time] has found me living off my savings first, then what little I had in a 401. I`m lucky though, because I saw it coming, and paid off everything including my mortgage. I can honestly say, that there isn`t one person I know [except one who got a business through daddy that he sold to retire at 45 4 years ago] that the middle class is gone as we`ve known it, and the "gilded age" of CEO and corporate wealth rules now. And yeah, all you can do is look at it as "just another job". That`s just what they`ve been striving for all these years. Anyway, good luck to you and yours.”

“Name a time when you encountered a difficult personality at work and talk about how you handled it.

Very common question. What we, the long term unemployed know more than most, is that the hiring process has become just as homogeneous as your local Walmart/Home Depot/Target shopping center. I came from biotech, but every single job interview, inside and out of my chosen profession, has centered around personality questions. The hiring team from every field is trained to select the same kind of person.

I'll leave it up to the reader to decide what kind of person I'm talking about. Long term unemployed are ipso facto the wrong kind of person.”

I lost my benefits. My/our (the unemployed) greatest obstacle however is prejudice. The money was simply providing me some fish. I need access to that lake where people are allowed to fish. I know how to fish. The problem is that there is a big fence around the lake. On that fence is an old rusty sign that reads, "No job, no access". That sign is there through good times and bad.”

Geographical location? I think many Americans never really hear from those that lost their jobs due to the crisis caused by the banking industry and don't truly understand what their (unemployed) barriers are for regaining employment. I'd be interested in your first hand experience and I hope you find suitable employment soon!”
