Obama And Congress Pressured By Mayors To Take Action On Guns

“Why go after just the gun trade? Why not go after the gangs in the urban areas. Police seem to know who they are but cannot seem to touch them.

I cannot see why there are not crackdowns on gangs. People who will kill others for wearing the wrong color if you cross into their territory.

Crackdowns on gangs might even produce a few lawyers and bankers that must be helping these people launder their money and whatever”

“Who said anything about "just" going after the gun trade? I merely said we should be enforcing the laws on the books in regards to illegal gun sales. I never said that was the only thing we should do.

Most cities have a task force devoted entirely to gang activity these days. Guns are a big part of the gang culture, so they do spend a lot of time focusing on that. But it also means addressing other aspects of gang activity, like drugs and turf wars.”

“Yes, grab all the home owner's guns. The major at Fort Hood just had bad day and decided to shoot people. Or could it be that he was a terrorist and we are so politically correct about we are extremely slow to condemn anyone who is not white or Christian.

The major gave off all the signs but no one was willing to say anything. Where are all the conspiracy people? Was our intelligent agencies hoping to send this man to Iraq hoping he would go AWOL and find a new terrorist cell.?

Apparently they forgot about suicide bombers. The major turned out to be a suicide shooter. He may have lived but I doubt that was his intent.

I doubt you would be able to make guns illegal on an army base but I never under estimate liberals.

Drugs are illegal but everyone that wants them seems to be able to find them. If we made guns illegal does that mean they would disappear or that criminals or terrorist like the major will be able to shoot people until they have run out of all the ammunition they can carry.

What is next. Disarming police officers to save money?”

“Wow. Do you strive for inaccuracy? Is there some kind of contest at the NRA?

Many people were worried about the Ft. Hood killer before the rampage, but because of knee-jerk laws passed with the support of the NRA, there was no legal way to stop him from buying a special cop-killer gun, bullets, and high-capacity magazines from Guns Galore in KILLeen, Texas. There was no "political correctness" here, just powerlessness under the law.”

“Mine are not blase comments unless you believe terrorism is not real.

It should be a worldwide problem. But possibly you believe the only terrorism attacks will be on the US. and England, possibly Germany and France and this is the reason other countries do not join us.

Everyone thinks of the U.S. as strong and rich. But are we. 2 wars over 8 years, finanical crisis, 10% unemployment (some say 17% if you count the underemployed.

I see lots of room for China and Russia to grow. Both are ramping their militaries.

Do not go by the cost of what the U.S. spends vs other countries. The labor of the U.S. worker and the Chinese worker is quite different..

BTW, going and helping your neighbor is a great way to get your mind off your own problems and possibly gain a new prospective about solving your own while helping another or the very least discover your problems may not be so bad as compared to another.”

“And just what is Obama doing different than Bush? Yet claim there is a huge difference that Republicans blindly follow Bush/Cheney but democrats are all cerebral that they can support the President but disagree on some issues.

You left out the issues you disagree on.

What happened to the antiwar group of democrats. Have they been silenced. Are they blindly following Obama because he has told them that war in Afghanistan is a good thing.

Just what has to happen for liberals and the former antiwar protesters (now warmongers) to call a victory in Afghanistan.

Do not try to sell us on a stable govt w/o corruption. Does Afghanistan have anything but an opium trade? Are we qualified to put in a govt w/o corruption. We cannot even do that here in the USA.”

“Everyone says Obama has great intellect. He is also a skilled speaker and organizer.

Then where is the coalition of countries to help out the U.S. in Afghanistan? Is NATO even participating other than a token force.

Where is the U.N. Why has our President with his outstanding abilities not gotten them on our side.

Matter of fact I am surprised given our President's gifts that China and Russia are helping us out as well.

Have we been mislead. No doubt Obama is a skilled speaker. That is something we all can attest to as we have seen him speak.

But is he really the intellectual we have been told. Many people say so but Carter was smart too.

Is Obama capable of organizing and building a coalition of many nations to help the U.S. If so it must be way under the radar”

“"Then where is the coalition of countries to help out the U.S. in Afghanistan? Is NATO even participating other than a token force."

The answer is that each of the NATO countries and other allies have their own problems. Kind of like when you have your own household problems, it's pretty hard to go out and help your neighbor.

"Matter of fact I am surprised given our President's gifts that China and Russia are helping us out as well."

bighat, this is a serious issue. Blase comments like this, show that you may not really care about the issue at all, but just want to make snide comments that are shallower than a water puddle in the Sahara.

"Is Obama capable of organizing and building a coalition of many nations to help the U.S. If so it must be way under the radar"

bighat, if a leader ever, ever emerged that could easily sway the leaders of other independent countries, I would say it would be a good time to build that bunker, and stock up on all the survival gear and food you can. And I would be right there with you.”

Even though we proclaim a war on drugs we do not seem to be in much of a hurry to destroy the opium crops.

Since we have been in Afghanistan what 8 yrs or so how is it they still have a drug trade? Do we have one policy for certain countries like Columbia and Mexico but we support the drug trade in places like Afghanistan?”

Anybody that the U.S. forces are chasing are simply crossing the border into Pakistan..

Anyone know what has to happen to call this war a win?

I have heard it will be the establishment of a govt w/o corruption. What does this mean?

The trains (or mules) for the opium crops will run on time and the drug runner pay taxes and not bribes?

Are we capable of establishing a govt w/o corruption? If so, perhaps we should try it here in the U.S. first.”

“The profit in wind, solar, and geo thermal will be made by the utility companies as they sell it to us.

Biggest problem as I see it is not that other forms of energy cannot be generated but none of them generate big money.

Oil is used to make many things. And every single of them is taxed including the raw product.

Maybe science (from military or NASA Projects) will one day discover something will replace oil.

More than likely it will be a variation of nuclear power. But there will be many accidents just as there has been with oil/gas throughout the years.

I am a little surprised that we still use heating oil. Sounds a bit like living over a powderkeg. But there are few accidents which surprises me.”

“Well, I guess the administration will hire even more wall street types and decide to start bailing out more banks.

Be sure and give them raises and nice bonuses. We want our wealthy to sleep well at night.

When is the Federal reserve going to be audited.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac should be investigated as well. (Wonder if private investors decided to start buying houses with no down payment and rented them to own to some of the people).

I also wonder how many mortgages were made with no money down. If someone cannot save money for a down payment then what is the likelihood they could save for a rainy day.

As many cities depend on taxes I wonder how many of these houses appreciated rapidly in order for the cities tax base to keep rising but run ads saying they did not raise taxes.

Has govt and greedy individuals failed America. Is this one of those times when everything we do goes wrong.

Congress may want to pass healthcare and climate change but if America is not working then none of these programs can be paid for. Though we may make the climate people happy as all vehicles are parked because there is no money for gas.

Only 1 think I know for sure. Congress will at minimum give themselves a raise for the cost of loving and maybe even a raise as well because they are staying up nights worrying about their constituents (actually re election)”

“You are proving your own point. If your best argument is to use govt money to creat jobs is the defense industry then you have already lost.

Yes, in the private defense industries people invest money, many people work there but in the end the products being produced (planes, ships, guns, ammo, are items that we wished we did nt have to use but will to protest the country.

But there is one side effect in the defense industry and NASA. Much of the research has been able to be adopted to other more peaceful activities such as cell phones and microwaves.

The defense industry does protect the country and provides us with research.leading to knowledge. So does NASA. The returns over these investments are over long periods of time. I realize there are many who would prefer to cut off all military spending and shut down NASA and use the money to feed the poor. But that idea while noble would lead to progress being stopped.

Do you know of a govt program that actually produces something useful”

JShankel replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 21:19:19

“I think we're violently agreeing with each other.

My overall gist here is that we need to stop it with these knee jerk ideological responses.

Saying on the one hand that "the government can't do anything right" or "the government doesn't create jobs" or that any stimulus spending is a boondoggle, and then supporting massive defense spending on the basis that the defense industry is good for America's economy (in addition to protecting us from, apparently, the entire whole rest of the planet's military) just strikes me as odd.

My take is that private industry is great for short term results and diversity of innovation and the public sector is great for long term projects.

The private sector didn't land on the moon and the government does not produce high quality merchandise at low, low prices. Instead of everyone picking sides, why don't we just use the appropriate tool for the appropriate job?”

I guess you have some special meaning for jobs.

Go ahead and post it.

I am sure that I and many others can make a case for or against almost every job from charities to government jobs.

Maybe you should be asking does government provide "real jobs"?”

JShankel replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 20:38:01

“Here's what I'm saying:

Conservatives argue that the stimulus or any other jobs creation program on the part of the government doesn't create "real" jobs because fundamentally the government must tax in order to get the money to create the jobs and it's at best a wash.

This sentiment is being posted here over and over.

Yet, conservatives also favor a strong defense, including a good deal of investment in private defense contracts, not just because it protects America but because it is good for the economy.

What I'm asking is, why does the principle that government can't create jobs somehow not apply to defense contractors? Can't we use the same logic to invest in our infrastructure as well? Isn't a road as good an investment as a bomber?”
