A Rebuttal to Howard Dean: I Am a U.S. Senator, and I Will Vote For This Bill

Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 17:12:15 in Politics

“Of course you'd like this bill Senator Kirk. You live in a State that has the same program that this bill imposes on the rest of the country. Your state has the highest health care costs on the planet but your big contributors are happy.
Massachusetts is having to cannabalize existing safety net programs to feed this miserable system and pay for CEO's yachts. But what do you care when the taxpayers have your back.
This bill is what happens when Senators who know nothing about medicine and care nothing about the lives of their constituents write legislation..
Dean is physician and you're not. He said no one could vote for this bill in good conscience. Apparently that is something you lack along with his credentials as a physcian. The one thing you don't lack is hubris.
This bill is ignorant, mean spirited and it won't work. Hopefully, your vote will cost you your job. I'm sure that won't bother you because you'll get a cushy billet in the health insurance industry. It will be however, a great relief to the rest of us.”

“That's a lie. Neither the Senate or the House bill are anything to build on. Even if it were, the Democrats have never fixed any bad bill they have passed.
It is a mandate to rob Americans and give the money to corporate health care industries; the same industries that have America's health care profiles to the bottom of the heap of developed nations. The same industries that let 20000 Americans die each year to beef their bottom line.
Even IF the Democrats finally wake up and try and fix the mess they've made, the industries will use taxpayers dollars to fight you every step of the way: the dollars you gave them against our will.”

“There isn't enough in this health care bill for AMERICANS to support, let alone Lieberman.
It's a welfare bill for HMO's Big Pharma and especially the useless insurance industry.
The special interests have co-opted reform.
There are no cost savings worthy of the name and no controls on premiums, deductibles or co-pays.
Big pharma has all ready raised prices beyond any cost savings they promised Obama.
The system they are contemplating will cost the earth and you can lose your savings and your house under this system.
Lowering the age for Medicare to 55 isn't reform, it's a sop. It won't do a thing for the most vulnerable.
Obama gave the keys to the treasury to health care corporations and enforced his back room bargains thrrough Ramh Emmanuel and the Baucus in the Senate. It's not only Lieberman and the GOPs that don't want real reform, it's your president.
He wants money for the 2010 election so he can keep his Democratic "fat cat" congress. He traded away your health care for campaign contributions.”

“Obama doesn' t mention a public option because, in spite of his campaign rhetoric, he doesn't support it. When the House started to create a robust public option, Obama Emmanuel over to threaten Progressives with non support in 2010. It was buried.
He cut deals with CEO's that don't allow for any competition from the public sector.
The system he supports and congress is advocating has been tried in three states and proved so costly they had to cut coverage and benefits. One of the states, Massachusetts has the highest health care costs on the planet!
Obama wants health insurance money for the Democratic Party and the 2010 election according to Jane Hamsher of firedoglake and he thought your health care needs could wait. Who knew that the community organizer we elected believed that Americans were too stupid to vote for people that actually looked for out for their interests instead of the ones who pretended to.
If either of the bills under consideration pass, it's going to be a nightmare for the American people and big profits for Obama's friends.
Congress needs to go back to the drawing board, probably under a different president.
In the meantime, they should stop giving money to Wall Street and fighting useless wars and use our dollars to help those suffering under the current system.”

I believe that the public option is inconsistent with the back door deals he has made with big pharma and the health care insurance industry. On this issue (as with many others) Obama is against and no for progressive legislation related to real health care reform that meets the needs of the people of the USA.”

dizmo4 replied on Dec 06, 2009 at 21:19:42

“Obama doesn't mention the public option because at this point its not really in his hands. Its in the hands of Reid and the conservative dems.
Pres. Obama has 0 leverage over the Blanche Lincoln, Ben Nelson, Mary Landreiu, and the like. Putting 100% of the blame on Pres. Obama completely misses the point.

Liberal groups "bailing" on Demcorats only ensures that no progressive agenda will EVER get done. The reason teh Democratic party is being held hostage by powerful conservative democrats is that the liberal base sat out too many election cycles. Liberal Dems couldn't raise the $$ so conservative Dems got elected and are now showing their conservative tendencies and blocking real reform.

With regard to Congress goign back to teh drawing board -- this obsession with a perfect bill is very damaging. The Original Social Security Act left millions of Americans out -- it was a bad piece of legislation. Yet, FDR still passed it and subsequent Congresses amended the act to include more and more people. The same goes for Health care reform. It won't be perfect and there will almost certianly be flaws in the programs. But getting it on the books makes it infinitely more easy to amend it at a later date. In 2010 or 2011, the Congress can focus 100% of their energy on the relatively narrow issue of a public option instead of the board and vague ides of total health care reform.”

Commented Dec 04, 2009 at 19:42:16 in Politics

“I voted for Obama and after nine months of President Obama, I find it impossible to believe that anything he has in mind is going benefit average Americans.
Health care is just as important as jobs yet he demanded it be budget neutral and then cut secret deals that squander taxpayers money. He supports huge cuts to Medicare and Medicaid so that private insurers can suck off the public teat.
Obama and the taxpayers own several megabanks. Yet he hasn't lifted a finger to pressure them into doing what are supposed to do; lend money. That wouldn't cost a dime.
Instead of sidestepping global warming, he should be lining up our "our banks" to start building the green economy he talked so much about before he was elected.
Meanwhile he is throwing away our money and our childrens lives in Afghanistan, in the vain hope that he can kill enough Afghans to make it safe for US energy multinationals to build another pipeline in 2010,
I think his talk about jobs is going to mean another hit on taxpayers wallets, another windfall for his CEO friends and not much else.”

Obama's Dilemma in Afghanistan

Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 16:02:19 in World

“Your argument ignores an important moral questions.
We have no right to be in Afghanistan. The Afghans did not attack us. The Afghan people don't want us or our corrupt government.
There is no moral justification for continuing to kill Afghans because Obama believes this is the way to solidify his political power.
Logisitically it's all wrong.
The last surge made things worse, galvanizing the Afghan people against the US presence. There is no evidence that repeating this mistake will have a different outcome.
All intelligence reports agree than less than a hundred Al Qaida remain in the bortder area. Our troop numbers will be at 100000 after Obama's latest escalation; 1000 US soldiers, per operative. If 700 soldiers can't hunt down a single Al Qaida operative, what makes anyone think 100 thousand can't.
He'll be spending 30 million a year to kill each operative.
None of it makes sense because that is not the reason Obama made his decision. It's pipeline politics. A new one is scheduled to begin in 2010. He's not going to withdraw US forces in the foreseeable future.”

“This the military-industrial complex DEM style. Every congressional district, every state, has
companies -- large or small that make military equipment. The US economy has survived on
gearing up for war since WWII and with it -- jobs and the economy. And no one -- GOP or DEM is willing to tamper with it. From making military trucks in Oshkosh, WI to Night Vision in Boston.
To drone programs in Seattle. Lots of DEM's make as much $ as the GOP off war. Until we
find peace in making money -- like high speed electric rail, Harvard quality education for all,
Universal health care, and nannies in every home like the French! -- Nothing will change.
But it is somehow immoral to do this in the United States. We have to do ourselves -- ride our own horse, cruise in an SUV. As nation we don't touch each other...... So we have lots of emotional, social and psychological barriers to break down before we can ride on the high speed electric rails without killing each other. "I had that seat first." "NO it's mine. All mine!”

“Your premise is flawed.
The bills before congress mean more money for health insurers; a lot more.
They get 50 million new customers, subsidized by tax payers and are no caps on premiums, co-pays or deductions. Taxpayers will take the poorest and the sickest off the hands of insurers.
It locks us into a system that skims 25% of our health care dollars and provides no health services.
It's not the Republicans that are blocking real reform, it's the Democrats and the Obama White House.
Instead of leading on reform, Obama cut secret deals with CEO's. When the Progressive Caucus stood firm on a strong pubic option, Obama sent Rahm to knock heads together.
:Pelosi stripped an amendment from the House bill that prevented insurers from suing states that set up their own single payer system.

The best solution I have heard is to maintain a small force over a long period of time and allocate and put the majority of resources toward rebuilding what we have destroyed. That is assuming Obama actually wants to leave. They are building a bigger embassy in Afghanistan than Iraq, currently the biggest Embassy on the planet. Afghanistan is the pipeline from the oil rich "Stans.”
