“Writing this article with such a definitive headline is very dangerous, HuffPost. You're tempting fate in a big way by stating that we will never see these things again. I see it happen all the time. You've gone and generated more potential jinx energy than I've ever seen in one place! May The Universe have mercy on us.”

“My first night in the apartment I am currently living in was a memorable one. My roommate and I left for dinner and when we got back we smelled something awful. As I proceeded down the hall to my bathroom (which is connected to a long hallway and my bedroom), I realized I was standing in murky water. I peered into my bathroom and saw that my bathtub was nearly full of this brown water and my toilet was overflowing. There were chunks of different food bits and spices - corn, carrots, basil, etc. - and it hit me what was going on. It turns out my upstairs neighbors, who have two small children, had flushed at least one diaper down the toilet and caused the building's septic tank to back up into every apartment. The screams and moans of the other residents will haunt my memory for the rest of my days. It was gruesome, but definitely hilarious looking back on it now.”

“I absolutely hate it when people make claims like, "Schoolchildren will just see that black face and the words. They don't understand the context." This is exactly the proof that demonstrates how unintelligent and ignorant so many religious groups are. EXPLAIN THE CONTEXT TO YOUR CHILDREN! If you don't explain it to them then you're continuing the cycle of misinformation that is the root cause of intolerance and hate in the world. By giving them a grounded and informed explanation you'll more than likely keep them believing whatever it is that you believe yourself, just by being calm and logical. I'm not saying this is a good thing, because I would rather have every person decide for themselves after a long examination of the facts, but it doesn't make sense that parents would go about these things in such an extreme way. It just shows that ignorance, mixed with a little bit of stubbornness and stupidity, can have such a large impact on human progress.”

Cellphones And Flying: Just Turn It Off Okay?

Cellphones And Flying: Just Turn It Off Okay?

Commented Feb 15, 2012 at 12:22:17 in Technology

“I think it's funny that the argument is ever ONLY about cell phones. It seems to go unnoticed that there are other devices capable of emitting the same frequencies as a cell phone that are allowed, yet they never seem to crop up in these debates.

The reason I don't turn my phone off is a simple matter of risk being outweighed by reward. I get more joy from using my phone during a flight than turning it off. The point is that airlines very, very rarely have crashes relative to how many flights are flown. When they do, how often do they attribute it to a cell phone? Never directly. I just think that when people write articles like this they are being a little hypocritical of humanity. As humans, we do things that increase our welfare because, on the whole, we know that the benefits outweigh the costs. Many of these scenarios involve our actions affecting others. We jaywalk, text and call while driving, drive cars, take the elevator, conceive children, play sports, let our kids carpool with other parents, etc., etc., etc. All of these have the potential for death, no matter how infinitesimal the chance, but we do them anyway because the payoff is greater than to not do them. When there is even remotely conclusive evidence that there is a risk that outweighs my reward in this airline scenario, that's when I'll consider "just turning it off, okay?".”

“I am glad you never err on the side of caution. We will see how that works out for you. Unfortunately, you also dont give a damn about the people around you. Im all for allowing you to take risks with your own life; but you dont get to do that with others.”

“I think the most amazing thing is the reactions of the bystanders. There wasn't a single person in ANY of these videos that seemed to give a second look, let alone rush to the person or persons injured. I've seen my fair share of accidents here in the States and the one thing that always holds true is that a majority of the bystanders and other motorists immediately rush to the injured party. Maybe it's a cultural difference, but it was the first thing that struck me as odd when I watched this.”

“The nonchalant reaction of the bystanders was the first thing I noticed too--must be cultural.

Friend Me, Please

Commented Jan 26, 2011 at 12:14:35 in Comedy

“I deleted mine about 2 months ago and it's been the most liberating, and also lonely, experience I've ever had. I was so tired of knowing everything about all of my friends and never having anything to catch up on when seeing old friends or even my family. My last Thanksgiving was spent around a table with almost no conversation because everything had already been said on Facebook. The most notable thing is the exponential lack of stress. Good riddance!”
