10 Biggest Myths About Autism From Moms Who Know

10 Biggest Myths About Autism From Moms Who Know

Commented Feb 18, 2013 at 12:09:05 in Parents

“Glad to see this piece. The public's view of autism seems to be built around children with Asperger's Disorder, especially those who have made press via basketball heroics or "against the odds" job success. Those uplifting stories are welcome, to be sure, but they may unintentionally distract people from knowing of the more serious, debilitating, and common manifestations of autism. Many individuals with autism have a limited ability to speak, or otherwise communicate. They suffer emotional meltdowns that are disabling not only to themselves, but to the caregivers around them, physically & emotionally straining families to the limits of their endurance. Many homes break under the strain. Improving the lot of those with autism, and those who support them, requires that the public be given a broader and more realistic portrayal of this disorder.”
