Antonin Scalia: Capitalism Requires 'Traditional Christian Virtues' To Succeed

Antonin Scalia: Capitalism Requires 'Traditional Christian Virtues' To Succeed

Commented Sep 13, 2013 at 17:23:07 in Politics

“Because religion has nothing to do with morality, it has to do with believing things in the absence of evidence. If religion is the basis of our morality, why are the most immoral countries in the world the ones with the most collaboration between church and state! Why are the safest, freest, most stable countries the ones where secular pluralism is accepted and maintained?”

Rebel Pig on Sep 13, 2013 at 17:25:58

“Memo: there is no such thing as a "real" exorcist. For such a profession to be legit, there would have to be real demons that enter people and take control of their real souls. Since there is no evidence to support the existence of either souls or demons, exorcists cannot be considered "real." You can't just assume demons are real because you saw something you didn't understand and couldn't find another explanation for it. Just because you don't know why or how it happened, doesn't mean you can claim a demon did it in order to skip steps.”

“Allow me to explain what these people are really thinking: "We need to keep these children out of the hands of their heathen-devil redskin parents and save them through the grace of Jesus! We must steal their children from them in order to save their souls from eternal damnation for believing the false religion of the heathen devil red savage!" There, that's the only reason these people care about the children; not because they care about their actual welfare or living conditions, but because they want to wipe out the beliefs of the native people's of the US and turn them all into little obedient christians so they can use them to seize control of our government. Dominionism is hard at work trying to undermine secular democracy, make no mistake.”

“The government has tried to nail 12-year-olds on kiddie porn charges and register them as sex offenders just because they received a sext from a classmate on their phones. With the tide of public opinion turning against the War on Drugs, the private prison lobby must be putting beacoup pressure on our leaders to find a new bogus charge category to nail everybody on so they can be assured that their private prison labor quotas will continue to be met and that no for-profit prisons will be closed. Gotta get our slave labor somehow, what with China's rising standard of living and no more mandatory drug charge incarcerations to keep that prison labor pool full...”

Middlebury 9/11 Memorial Flags Removed In Protest

Commented Sep 13, 2013 at 10:24:57 in College

“So destruction of property is unacceptable, unless it's destruction of indigenous people's property? Because if the accusation turns out to be factual, the fault was in the people who chose to place the memorial there in the first place. Simple solution: move it somewhere else.”

BLTdynomite on Sep 13, 2013 at 15:10:35

“Add to that that as an article in the Addison Independent said, "Madden [who confronted the students who were moving the flags] suggested the memorial be relocated as a compromise to both parties. The protestors [the students removing the flags] refused. Madden said Harris [who had helped set up the memorial] asked if he could at least have the flags back, as his group had purchased them. The protestors refused." There's no defense for what they did.”

BLTdynomite on Sep 13, 2013 at 15:04:22

“Except as the article indicated, no evidence has been presented that it's true. I think you're supposed to have evidence before you decide that land used to be a burial ground before you decide that a moral violation has been committed, and when you do find that evidence it would be nice if you shared it instead of just desecrating a memorial before anyone even knows any violation occurred.”

“The point is, you are ordering a drink that was created and intended to be made with the milk of an animal, and demanding that all the animal elements be taken out to suit your wishes. That is not reasonable. Either try drinking something that isn't built upon milk as the primary ingredient, or just deal with it. Or - here's a novel idea - make your OWN faux-latte at home where you can have control over the ingredients. Stop demanding the world treat you like a precious little Faberge egg.”

Too many people in this comment field seem to be acting like her employer should not have had the right to fire her for this...”

Even if there were no racist tone to the words on the sign, she would still be fired for this because she did it on company time in her place of employment and posted it on social media for the world to see. No business or industry in the world tolerates an employee who hurts its business by doing things like this on company time. Why shouldn't she be fired for publicly humiliating her place of business and possibly costing her employer future business? You want the government to force him to keep her employed? “It doesn't matter. What she did could very well end up costing her employer business, and for that reason alone she should be fired. This is not an issue of free speech; nobody is advocating silencing her or prosecuting her for this. She made the decision to do something stupid that could hurt her employer, so she's fired. I am simply stunned at the sheer volume of comments in this comment field saying that this is some sort of attack on her "freedom of speech." Freedom of speech states that the GOVERNMENT cannot impose consequences on you. Your employer is a private entity, not the government; firing someone is a private act, not a court order.”

HarrySeeword on Sep 12, 2013 at 15:45:59

“Well said.  I don't disagree with your response at all.  She is completely in the wrong, and I would have let her go as well.  Not a freedom of speech issue.  86 the gal.  Social media creates tough lessons and essentially "digital tattoos" for younger people.  It's pretty sad.  My only point here was that after putting myself through undergrad and grad school as a server, bartender, and manager in the restaurant biz, I, along with many other Native Americans in this very thread can verify...many don't tip well.  Word of caution to servers however:  Don't prejudge, or beware the self-fulfilling prophecy.    ”

Polite customers got an aisle number or location immediately; the rest had to sit and wait two minutes while I paged a coworker to supply the information I "needed" to find it.”
