“How can I possibly know why she's desperate? I'm just saying she OOZES desperation and insecurity - it's just the vibe she exudes. The leg incident didn't help.”

Karama on Apr 20, 2012 at 02:54:35

“I disagree! She doesn't ooze desperation, and the leg thing was funny.”

Jill from NYC on Apr 16, 2012 at 23:00:04

“Oh come on now, do you think she cared about that? She's never been one to care what anybody thinks about her except for the people who matter in her life. She laughed it off as a joke.

I wonder what specific signs of desperation and insecurity you are seeing -- or more likely, imagining.”

“Exactly. It's children that are most adversely affected by the absence of a social safety net - and sadly, they can't get jobs or choose their parents.”

laserbabe on Apr 16, 2012 at 20:37:56

“or what if they chose parents who lost their jobs and couldn't find new ones? or decent paying ones? or if the child had a birth defect and their insurance capped out and the parents went through medical bankruptcy. there are hundreds of scenarios where the social safety net is critical, and does not involve laziness of ANY kind.”

“I understand what you're saying, but you have to agree that the way he phrased this is a real insult to the work women do, and have done for generations, in the home. Raising kids is WORK - it is legitimate, dignified, respectable work - which is why he advocates hiring someone else to care for your children - so that THEY, one assumes, can experience the "dignity of work" that you can't, because you aren't hired for the job that you are being advocated to hire someone else to do, so that you can work outside the home. And I can't believe I'm saying this because for the most part, I can't stand the whole stay-at-home-mom culture - but I guess these aren't the mother's he's talking about.”

“Because raising children ISN'T work!!! God - I cannot stand this guy. What planet is he on? I guess my grandmother didn't have the "dignity of work" because she raised her own children. This is such an insult to women, and I mean across the generations. And no, I do not have children, and yes, I work.”

fishd312 on Apr 16, 2012 at 19:21:29

“He is talking about those collecting government assistance. I don't have a problem with that. No, I do not have children, and yes, I work...”

cheo on Apr 16, 2012 at 19:20:51

“Ol' Mitt is fine with you being a stay-at-home mom if you're rich and in that case it's noble work, but NOT if you're poor.”

“Are you for real? You are seriously offended these people are getting married? What's hypocritical about changing your mind about something as personal as marriage? - particularly when there are children involved. I mean - seriously - get over yourself.”

“I agree. It's like she lost her identity or something. She used to ooze self confidence, but now she just seems really insecure and desperate.”

Jill from NYC on Apr 16, 2012 at 21:43:19

“Insecure and desperate about what? Her career is going well; she starts filming "Maleficient" this summer. She still pulls in $15 million plus backend per movie. She just got engaged to Brad Pitt. Do you know something the rest of us don't?”

“Girls is definitely low-fi. It's funny and it's also somewhat gross and unpleasant - the counter-point to "normal" TV - maybe that's the appeal. For whatever reason, I couldn't stop watching and wanted more. Maybe because it was so realistic-seeming, and it brought some sick, voyeuristic tendencies to the fore, henceforth repressed. It felt a bit .like reading someone's diary, and vaguely dirty. I can understand the boredom and revulsion that some viewers may have experienced watching this show. But as someone who sleeps in my clothes, with my shoes on, on a semi-regular basis, I can relate to the over-all ambience of poor hygiene and ennui on the screen. No, I'm not proud, but I'm obviously not alone. Consider yourself lucky if you have NO idea what I'm talking about - and excuse me while I microwave another cup of coffee and get back to my job, of looking a job.”
