“Maybe people just need to remember that if they don't want to be in solitary confinement then they shouldn't do things that land them there.”

Maryclare McCauley on Apr 29, 2014 at 12:13:44

falgiano on Apr 29, 2014 at 10:26:32

“Oh c'mon, that argument is so tired and lazy. Solitary should be a last resort, not a default setting for trouble makers. This country is way over the top with the idea of 'punishment' and it's a slippery slope down to a police state.”

“I suspect the blame the victim comments are coming from the very people who scream about victim's rights.”

Critical Thnker on Apr 28, 2014 at 23:32:18

“You read the article, right? The man in the documentary spent over 10 years in solitary..... and didn't do anything to 'land him there.' Your callous disregard for the fact that many people are punished for things they didn't do, or shouldn't be crimes at all, is sickening. The ignorance it takes to sleep at night completely convinced that the prison system is applied perfectly, with perfect justice in exactly the proper dose, to precisely the right people.... is breathtaking.”

“And do you have any idea of what those are? Do you even know why the women discussed in this article was where she was? It is the undereducated, uninformed, people lacking in critical thinking skills who make comments like you just did. Solitary isn't about what was done but whether or not a system wants to break a person. You can now switch your brain off and go back to grazing.”

DIridescent on Apr 28, 2014 at 21:13:01

“What an enlightened perspective you have.

Why do we put any effort into our prisons at all? Forget solitary. Just throw prisoners into a giant pit and toss in some food now and then. And when people talk about how that's inhumane, just say your little phrase again, that they "shouldn't do things that land them there".”

LordoftheBrown on Apr 28, 2014 at 20:50:18

“Maybe you should check the facts and find out just how many people are wrongfully assigned to solitary confinement before you getting all righteous up in here. Ya dig?”

VPerry24 on Apr 28, 2014 at 20:40:37

Strywever on Apr 28, 2014 at 20:29:30

“And maybe other people just need to read any of the many recently published articles and books that discuss the drastic over-use of solitary confinement in the modern U.S. prison system and its drastically negative results.”

guntotinganglion on Apr 28, 2014 at 20:19:02

“Solitary confinement is torture, plain and simple. It should be illegal.

So, what you are saying is, if you don't want to be tortured, don't do the things that will get you tortured. Talk about tortured logic!”

Matt Meyer on Apr 28, 2014 at 20:08:06

“I imagine the church made a similar argument during the middle ages, if you just believe in god we won't rip out your fingernails.

Human rights have really taken a beating the last ten years. We, America, we torture people and say it's legal. NO NO NO NO. We do not do this, we do not do this, people are not animals. We don't drive them insane in solitary cells, we don't waterboard them. We have humanity, we don't brutalize people, even bad people.....”

dontomas on Apr 28, 2014 at 19:50:52

“If you can look at the human condition and realize every time someone suffers it could be you if for some reason your life was not the way it is. It does not matter what they did or why, its just compassion....you either have it or you don't.”

Dave Roberts 123 on Apr 28, 2014 at 19:06:48

“There is no set rules for who goes into solitary it is based entirely on the whims of prison guards. The idea that everyone in solitary is violent is just a lie spit out by shameless defenders of the prison industrial complex.”

J5K on Apr 28, 2014 at 19:00:01

“Maybe yet other people need to realize that there is never a legitimate reason to lock someone in solitary, especially not for an extended amount of time, as it is cruel and unusual punishment.

Not to mention, it is often wielded inappropriately by power hungry guards.... I suppose you think it is just fine for them to get raped and beaten, too?

Not to mention, she was a political prisoner.”

trinity333 on Apr 28, 2014 at 18:23:36

“Tammy, it's your kind of off-the-cuff remark that is so frustrating, because it shows that you know nothing about this kind of punishment. Watch this documentary and learn something before you are so flippant about it.”

enuma on Apr 28, 2014 at 17:32:11

“"They did something bad first" is the logic of toddlers. The fact that they are criminals does not give us license to conduct torture within in our prisons. It does us zero good. It lowers the moral character of our nation, and we are inflicting mental damage on people who are supposed to be released back into the general population someday.”

Robert J Masters on Apr 28, 2014 at 17:07:02

“Most people in prison are there for one reason alone. They did something that a government doesn't like. They didn't hurt anyone but only broke a rule.

You people who vilify rule breakers and by extension see ignorant compliance as virtuous scare me more than the rule breakers do.”

And IF you read the article you would know that the post office discontinued mail delivery because they believed the house to be vacant. We just lost a neighbor woman in her 90s who has had zero contact with anyone on our street since 1984 when her husband died. She informed all of the neighbors that she didnt want them coming with casseroles and cakes and invitations. She didnt want to neighbor with any of them and just wanted to be left alone. She lived in that house since 1968 and several of our other neighbors have been here the same length of time, when the houses were built. We have been here almost ten years and we never said eyes on this woman. Never any lights on, shades and drapes all pulled all the time. As her neighbors, we respected her wishes.”

While it isn't the way most of us choose to exist, those who do chose it should have their wishes respected. I bet if you could ask the brothers, they would tell you that not ONE of their neighbors is responsible or had any obligations to them. Some people just want to be left alone and that is their right. Nothing sad nor tragic about it.”

“An article I read yesterday about this said the two men had little contact with anyone. Not family or neighbors. We have lived by an elderly woman for 9 years and have never seen her. Never any lights visible. She has lived in her house since it was built in 68. She was always anti social although her husband and kids were not, according to other neighbors who have lived here as long as she has. When she was widowed in her 70s she let the neighbors know up front that she did not want them coming to the door or trying to "neighbor" with her as she had no interest or desire. She passed away last weekend at a nursing home where she had been for almost a year. None of us had any idea, we just thought she was still in her home. Everyone respected her wishes not to be bothered. If people want to be left alone, that is their right and should be respected. In this womans case, she wouldnt have answered the door anyway.”

“It can happen very easily actually. My mom is in her 80s and has all of her bills taken out of her bank account monthly. Medicare and supplemental are taken out annually. Her lawn is taken care of all year by a lawn service that also takes out their monthly payment. They show up and mow, trim fertilize and shovel snow and never come to her door. She gets no paper statements from the utility companies or bank, it is all done online. 99% of her mail is junk. Her pension is direct deposit and since she never spends even close to what her monthly pension is, her money just builds up. This could go on for YEARS and no one would notice if she was reclusive and had little family or family contact. I read yesterday that these two men had nothing to do with any of the neighbors and no family contact. The house looks pretty run down so it isnt unusual that the mail carrier thought it was empty. If utilities werent paid they would just shut them off. When this happens it is easy to blame neighbors or family but at the end of the day, they died alone because they had chosen to LIVE that way.”

“The boys were arrested within a few hours of the rape being reported. However, mom would not let Daisy testify and stopped the deposition. Mom made her take the fifth because Mom didnt want to discuss the fact that Daisy and her 13 year old friend has spent the evening drinking at her house before texting this guy and sneaking out to meet him. There was no dna evidence at the ER. The 13 yr old said the boys dropped them off and Daisy went inside the house and then later went back outside where her mom found her drunk and with wet hair. It was not raining or snowy that night. Mom claims she put her in a bath to warm her up so any dna was gone. Not right to blame the PA when mom wouldnt let her testify and there are conflicting stories between Daisy and her friend. I am certainly not saying she wasnt raped and I am not saying she deserved anything she got but MOM needs to stop blaming everyone else for what happened to the case. And mom needs to shut down all the social media sites she has set up. But there was no rich politician calling in favors, he has been out of politics since 93 and was not a powerful one.
