“This is brilliant. What is so impossible to explain through words this shows clearly. There is a huge debate and paradigm shift occurring on how "mental illness' is defined and understood. It is crucial for that debate for us to be able to communicate what it is like to exist in that paradigm. A graphic format like this is the only way to convey the difference between a physical and mental difference. Physical distress is very serious, but it does not color your life the same way at all. Psychological distress and imbalance permeate every single aspect of your life if you suffer from them. I would love to see so much more of this type of real communication. Well done!”

“Pictures like this can seem like some sort of futuristic fantasy. They are not. Look at how quickly Dubai was built. We can absolutely start constructing such "dreams". Our world could look completely different in 20-30 years. All that is lacking is our vision and the commitment to build from vision to physical reality. I hope more creators like these get the audience they deserve.”

“I am personally a fan of seeing as much of Rihanna as possible, as often as possible. There may be more beautiful women alive today, I'm just not sure that most of them have the strength to take the weight of the public gaze. She seems to be doing just fine with it, and she owns and offers her sexuality and femininity in a way that I think makes her an incredible role model.”

My Medicated Case for Psychiatrics

“Brett, I think you make an important point here. I'm schizoaffective, which is really close to your diagnosis. I've gone the unmedicated route for a little over 10 years. I made that decision for many good reasons, these drugs, long term, can and do have significant cumulative negative effects. Still, that has meant that I work as a janitor instead of the promising art career I was heading for. That is not to say that my health isn't improving, it is. I've noticed in the last 5 years in particular that the hard work I've been doing to treat my illness without medication is producing significant and enduring results. What I would like to see is the mental health profession start offering a much wider range of treatment options, and much greater patient involvement in our treatment. Reforming mental health care requires a broad coalition, I think that can include those of us who are medicated AND unmedicated. The purely medical model we have now doesn't adequately address the complexities and subtleties of mental, psychological, emotional, and spiritual functioning that accompany mental differences. I'm elated you have had such a great result with meds! Just keep in mind that there are huge numbers of folks who do not. My support groups are filled with them, and the devastating and permanent iatrogenic conditions neuroleptics can cause.”

7 Of The Most Helpful Things You Can Say To Someone With Depression

Commented Sep 11, 2014 at 13:08:08 in Healthy Living

“Depression is arguably, the most grueling and debilitating form of mental distress. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT is worth looking into if you live with depression. It's a brilliant, non-drug approach to helping you learn to feel really bad, and keep moving. It was developed by Marsha Linehan, who faced great mental obstacles herself. it has saved my life and wholeness many times over. It doesn't make you feel "better" it helps you function in the midst of the blackness. There is something magical in facing depression, not "running away" from it or trying to "beat it." If you can feel it deeply enough, it will whisper to you the changes your life needs to lift it as much as possible. It can be a friend not an enemy. This is all really hard to do, depression steals so much of our ability to do anything. I can't erase the trauma that caused my issues, but I have found that I can learn to build a life less haunted and hamstrung by that trauma.”

“Cannabis gets a lot of positive attention for alleviating physical ailments but a bad rap for mental illness. It's a strong substance, and shouldn't be used recklessly. All medications powerful enough to heal can hurt when used carelessly, usually less is more. Cannabis also has some side effects that can compromise memory and some cognitive function. Still these side effects pale by comparison to the huge benefits I get as a person with mental illness.
- increased appetite, I cook and eat not junk "food munchies" but healthy, regular meals. I struggle with food issues and low weight so this is huge for me.
- regular sleep and exercise
Cannabis makes me want to be outside, more physically active and then I sleep much better.
- mood stabilization and relief of anxiety. Cannabis reduces my depression, mania and anxiety.
- alcohol addiction. Alcohol is a great analgesic, but it's toxicity comes with a massive price to your body and mental stability. Add to this a tolerance that climbs quickly and many with mental illness just can't use it safely.

Again, everyone is different, so please pay attention to what your body and mind tell you. This is just my own experience after many years of trial and error.”

“Just to be clear, I'm a huge fan of Tyson and a science geek through and through. He's right, Christianity does not belong in the classroom.

The teachings of Jesus
have never been needed
more clearly translated
than right here and right now.
Stop bickering over
historical details
lost back in the desert.
Trivial trivias,
drowning in doctrines,
his voice with obsessions.
on these tired crusades.
We all kill him again,
pounding literal nails.
Stilling the heart that still
beats, with the thunderous
science he really taught.
The bright truth that he brought.
That science in action,
see it rock crowds and rooms
he hits with Pope Francis
like a great sonic boom.
Do we think for a moment,
he paid more attention
as he hung on that cross,
to past dinosaur bones
than our future he bought?
He threw all his genius
not at how we evolved,
but evolving our Love.
The one theology
we can't learn from a book,
that we choke out with words,
that we strangle with thought.
Let him breathe through our deeds
let him sing with our hands,
the Gospel of Kindness.
We worship Christ's body,
not in some fancy church
but the dust of this world,
he died giving to us.
Here we resurrect him.
Hear he will come again!
Once we build his kingdom,
on our own wide green Earth,
we'll bring Heaven to him.”

“Have you noticed how few comments there are on most articles here these days? The FaceBook requirement gutted the commentariat. Sure the "conversations" are more civil, but fewer in number and more canned as well. The only sections that get a lot of discussion are the partisan political articles. I'm not sure what percentage of accounts are paid activists but their presence dominates much more since the FB exodus. It's a shame the comments are so much less lively, the rest of the site just keeps getting better.

Was it worth the money they paid you guys? It probably was in the short term... most Faustian bargains are.”

“” ‘Is it true?’ is the great question children ask,” Lang said. They do ask that question, I know; and it is not one to be rashly or idly answered. But that question is hardly evidence of “unblunted belief,” or even of the desire for it. Most often it proceeds from the child's desire to know which kind of literature he is faced with. Children's knowledge of the world is often so small that they cannot judge, off-hand and without help, between the fantastic, the strange (that is rare or remote facts), the nonsensical, and the merely “grown-up” (that is ordinary things of their parents' world, much of which still remains unexplored). But they recognize the different classes, and may like all of them at times. Of course the borders between them are often fluctuating or confused; but that is not only true for children. We all know the differences in kind, but we are not always sure how to place anything that we hear. A child may well believe a report that there are ogres in the next county; many grown-up persons find it easy to believe of another country; and as for another planet, very few adults seem able to imagine it as peopled, if at all, by anything but monsters of iniquity."

I also work in advocacy with plenty of veterans who have been thrown under the bus and bled dry by exactly the professions that are supposed to help. It's understandable that the general public is largely unaware that the psychiatric profession has richly earned the level of mistrust and rage developing. Check out Robert Whitaker to learn more about how the medical profession is failing those of us with mental illness.

“This is why Huff Post can be refreshing. Nothing but crickets here and, but I just read, god knows why, hundreds of comments about this on a certain gossip site. All gleefully throwing stones at this kid for what? Wearing a costume to a wedding that is itself a costume party? Being eccentric? The HORROR.

Snark is just shorthand for envy, and it's much more offensive than anything about Jayden. Since when has Hollywood rewarded style less than substance? What word count does it take for you to collapse under the weight of your own hypocrisy?”

Shar Rowell on May 26, 2014 at 21:19:02

“Well, you have to admit, it's a strange thing to wear to a wedding reception...eccentric or not. If someone showed up to my wedding in a ridiculous costume, I'd be pretty pissed. It's a memorable occasion that is usually captured by video and photos, and I sure wouldn't want something like that in the photos.

Though it would make for some interesting stories when recounting the wedding...but still. Just plain weird in my opinion.”

“The problem with the insanity defense is that it focuses on the psychosis as the driving force in violence instead of the emotional response. Overwhelming rage, grief, shame or trauma can induce temporary psychosis in any individual. The psychosis is driven BY the emotional overload, not the cause. As a schizophrenic I experience psychosis on a daily basis. I've spent many years working on my trauma so in those states I'm as harmless as a fly, just a bit odd. A "mentally healthy" person who just discovered their partner cheating would be much more dangerous and unpredictable than I would even be in my most disordered states. Extreme stress and emotion combined with or causing psychosis are what cause volatile behavior far more than the reverse.”

This would be freeing for all concerned, those affected by the illness and family members, who oftentimes ignore, make excuses, rather then getting family members the help they need. I've watched scores of people on the forums and sites I go to regularly evolve from silly trolls into critical thinkers almost overnight. Before online commenting the only views you heard were from a tiny elite. Now, I'm much more likely to be gobsmacked by the insight of some random stay at home mom in Ohio than any pundit. Provocative and sensationalistic journalism is nothing new, but it seems to be evolving from an echo chamber into an interactive and interesting animal.”
