“The Institute believes it's critically important to restore this section of the voting rights act so that people of all colors and beliefs can have equal access to the electoral process. To those who say the vote itself is a fraud, and that what we are given is usually a choice between tweedledum and tweedledee, we say, look at the vast changes the country has experienced since the previous administration. We now have fewer wars, less intrusion on privacy, more respect for habeus corpus, the intention to do away with Guantanamo, more transparency in government, greater freedom of the Press...Okay, maybe we don't, but at least this administration intends to change all these things, and people should have a right to go to the polls and support its good intentions without being obstructed by entrenched interests.

“The Institute agrees that the man chose the wrong house, but would like to point out that he couldn't possibly have known this in advance. Were there, however local ordinances requiring all armed householders to put signs on their front doors to the effect that they were armed, intruders would have a heads up and could either find another house to break into, or take their chances. Moreover, what would prevent unarmed householders from putting the same sign on their front doors? Nothing! If every American home and apartment displayed the sign ARMED HOUSEHOLDER INSIDE, it might exponentially reduce the widespread incidence of breaking and entering. There is of course always the risk burglars would then take to arming themselves before they broke in, and that some might even enter the house shooting. But there's no reward without risk and a trial period of six months to a year should be enough to determine whether, in this case, the benefits outweigh the risks.

“From time to time, we've wondered whether Rick Perry's shirt collars were too tight, and if they were, might they have shut down circulation to his brain and impaired otherwise sound judgment? Far fetched? Look at what was orthodoxy in medical science yesterday but is suddenly today, for instance the notion that high hdl protected one from heart attack. Millions of men who yesterday walked around feeling safe because they possessed high hdl today have to rethink their health status. On the chance a tight collar does influence behavior, maybe Gov. It was obvious when Lindsey was expressing her feeling for Ben, he did not return the feelings and looked stoned face. The feeling was not mutual. Sandra Fluke Receives Call From Obama After Rush Limbaugh 'Slut' Comments

Commented Mar 2, 2012 at 17:40:45 in Politics

“So far, the Playdo Institute hasn't had to cope with being prevented from testifying at a Senate Hearing. As to being called a slut on national media, we welcome the opportunity. Being called a slut by a Rush Limbaugh means being saved from a life of anonymity. It could even entail a phone call from our President, or Gloria Steinem, or Susie Bright. Microphones might be thrust in our (metaphoric) face asking how we feel? We would get to tell the American public we were outraged, that Rush Limbaugh is a so and so, that he should be relieved of his platform. We might say this so memorably we'd be offered a contract to have our own show on a liberal talk network. Why, we'd be on our way!

Elie Wiesel: Mitt Romney Should Tell Mormon Church To Stop Performing Posthumous Proxy Baptisms On Jews

Commented Feb 14, 2012 at 19:14:18 in Politics

“Well, it sure beats burning at the stake, being baptized in absentia. And it doesn't exactly hurt. In fact, most victims of surreptitious baptism may not even know it's happened--rather like the doctor telling one, "This won't hurt a bit," except of course, here there is no doctor and it really doesn't hurt.

There is a certain presumption in taking one's essence, whatever that is, and subjecting it to the rites of an alien religion. But as it's all done in good faith and as, on Pascal's wager, it can't do any harm and could do good, we think Elie Wiesel should turn his attention to more concrete problems--impending nuclear war in the middle east, famines and massacres in Asia and Africa, the rise of neo fascist government in Romania, the use of American drones to kill people, and so forth and so on. After all. One only has so much moral leverage in life. Why waste it railing against good intentions.

We do wonder however whether HuffPost might not bring us these events AS they were actually occuring? For example, Huffpost might place live feeds in sites where it felt random shootings were LIKELY to take place. In this way, HuffPost's subscribers would not only be the first to know about these events, they would experience them before knowing about them became a logical possiblity.

Psychpro on May 30, 2012 at 20:57:01

“Also, HuffPost could simply put out nonspecific/generic reports of shooting events, since they happen daily now, anyway. That way the story can be up first thing in the morning, and the details can be added as the day progresses.

HuffPost commenters won't have to wait for the actual event to occur before writing their predictable "If only we all carried guns..." or "If it became a crime to own guns only criminals..." or "The Second Amendment...." or "Guns don't shoot people..." etc remarks as soon as they sign on.

See, the way it is now, they have to wait sometimes hours before HuffPost puts up an article to which they can post, and that means some of them just can't hold it any longer and end up posting in the wrong spot.”

ABQ-Mike on May 30, 2012 at 20:39:56

Balance Yourself, Not Work and Life

Commented Feb 20, 2012 at 20:50:41 in Healthy Living

“A friend of ours once fell asleep and dreamed he was chasing a mouse. When he awoke, he found he was sleeping head to head with his cat. The cat had probably helped him achieve his dream. We realize this isn't what the writer had in mind by advocating we help others achieve their dreams; nonetheless something depends on the nature of the dream in question.

For example, should we help those who dream of world domination achieve their dream. What would be stress relieving for them would be stress inducing for others. And what of those who dream of getting rich? Should we help them achieve this dream, or gently point them toward the dream of getting in touch with nature and animals instead?

There are difficult questions. So is the question of work. We too love our work and love guiding our team, but we have yet to get to the bottom of how our team feels about it.

What Marriage Really Needs Is for Us to Get

What Marriage Really Needs Is for Us to Get "Whys"

Commented Oct 12, 2011 at 00:02:39 in Divorce

“We've always felt that marriage was nature's way of limiting the damage human beings do their surroundings. So long as males aren't married, their energies may find unpredictable outlets. Once they marry, in America anyway, it's work, television, home maintenance, then slow redundancy followed by golf or adultery.Females do better outside wedlock, but only in first world countries. In second and third world countries, the life of unmarried women is problematic.

Traditionally, of course, marriage is a means of establishing and verifying relationships, thereby guaranteeing lineage and inheritance rights. Before you leave your kingdom, or insurance policy, to your nephew, you want to be certain he's your nephew. Before DNA testing, marriage was the orthodox means of reassuring yourself. Your nephew is your sister's child, you and your sister being the children of a married couple whose issue has been certified by the state. Without this certification, in a free form birth derby, anyone can be anyone's child so everything is up for grabs.

Here, of couse, lies the problem with limited marriages. If you have three or four of them, and each results in a child, who has what relation to whom?

“True, but in this economy, people aren't going to have an estate to bequeath, so the point is moot.”

abhorson on Oct 12, 2011 at 06:04:42

“actually it's VERY simple .. upon birth, a father chooses whether to "recognize" the child legally. There are many ways to do so - and he is then placed on the birth certificate of the child.

It could become a problem with "whose" child becoming relatives with "same family" ... but given the HUGE # of out of wedlock babies AND the fact that even today, the "paper" guarantee is sometimes less than 'perfect' ... IN OTHER WORDS, if you're getting married because it's the only way to 'know' who the father is, that's a pretty lousy situation.

If he does NOT recognize the child he has NO rights in that child's life AND no obligations. Under certain conditions the woman can force (lawsuit with paternity probe) a paternity suit to prove the father.

Inheritance doesn't depend upon marital status - not as far as children go... everything would still naturally go to your children, OR as you specify in a will.

And, as far as who does better in which way (women or men) ...”

They may pay their handlers but not the animals themselves. Animals don't know the value of money. You might say this is a fundamental difference between humans and animals. Humans have exchange rituals based on money, the object being to bypass accumulating goods in favor of accumulating something which has the potential to be translated into goods. This is what's so interesting about the diet craze in America: people pay other people money to help them divest themselves of what they've accumulated., in effect, entering voluntarily into a lose/lose situation, something no self respecting animal would ever do.

Commented Apr 2, 2011 at 15:32:04 in Politics

“Is Rep. Bettencourt's argument the following: The Bishop is a Pedophile Pimp. The Bishop advocates feeding the poor. Therefore, anyone who advocates feeding the poor is Pedophile pimp? Or is it: The Bishop is a sinner. Any sin disqualifies one from commenting on social issues. Therefore, the Bishop is disqualified from commenting on the social implications of cutting aid to the poor? If not, what is his argument?

We'd also like to point out that Pedophile Pimp, is ambiguous in that pedophile could modify pimp as well as be an auxiliary noun. We doubt Representative Bettencourt picked this up since we're certain that, had he, he would have been clearer.

Finally, taken as we believe Representative Bettencourt intended it, Pedophile Pimp implies the Bishop actively procured children. Just think, citizens: a politician called a Bishop a pedophile pimp, in New Hampshire no less, because he advocated helping the poor.

“The Institute feels sexual misconduct shouldn't be grounds for resignation or impeachment. On the contrary we feel, if admitted, and within reason, it should constitute a qualification, if not a prerequisite, for elective office. Admission of sexual misconduct on the part of candidates would remove the shock and subsequent cynicism the discovery of such misconduct generally elicits. It would also humanize candidates by letting the electorate know its candidates were not much different in this respect from they themselves. Perhaps a reality show, entitled something like CANDIDATES ARE PEOPLE TOO, could provide a forum in which prospective congressmen and senators could confess their sexual peccadilloes. The candidates might then answer questions from the viewing audience, affording it the opportunity to make up its own mind as to whether or not the candidates repentance is sincere.
