“I approached a guy in the dairy department in a Wal Mart. He had a sidearm. I ask the obviously answered question. Is that a loaded gun? Yes it is. I responded it looks stupid here. I think he was genuinely embarrassed. And not easily riled I'm happy to say. It did look dumb. He was prepared for a shootout amid the Greek yogurt tubs? Pleeez!”

“Comrade Isabel, when you've moved to Venezuela get back to us with your new address. So we can correspond with you. On the rare occasions you don't spend your entire day trying to buy groceries.”

“I have been in Caracas twice, once in 1978 and then again in1998( years before Chavez) and, after travelling most of the world, from Marrakesh and Nairobi to Buenos Aires stopping in between in Bratislava during communist rule, I can categorically and undoubtedly proclaim that Venezuela is the WORST AND MOST DANGEROUS place I have ever been to. It is a shi#%^t hole and was an even bigger shi#%t hole before Chavez.”

“I've lost 135 in the last 18 months. When I bought a pair of not so subtle plaid walking shorts I knew I was in the tall cotton. Just not so big around cotton. The Sprout's bulk manager must wonder where all the steel cut oats are going. The produce guy the half and half packaged salad mix. And the local liquor guy? He is wondering what happened to his Tanqueray gin business. I now have a new liquid in my life. T10 lubricant for my bicycle chain.”

“The Wal Mart Supercenter near us was built with passive lighting from skylights. Reducing their electric lighting needs. They recently installed a large solar farm over covered parking that provides all of their electric demand during daylight hours. In Tucson AZ, that is significant. They have a rainwater harvesting program that provides water for much of the shopping center's landscape during our rainy season. And they sell for less. Works for me. Plus, I doubt they care much about what Portland thinks. They do care what I think as a customer and I think they rock.”

brandenmikal on May 26, 2014 at 19:00:31

“Try working for Walmart; especially in high volume stores. You would be surprised at what you'd learn.”

StrongDemocrat on May 18, 2014 at 09:36:53

“It's great that they do that. Another way for them to save money and save the environment. Do they use that money to pay their employees better? Because if not, you are helping to subsidize their employees and I would guess that you would be against that.

"Wal-Mart is supported (subsidized) by taxpayers in every location in which it is located - either with tax subsidies, land grants, worker's assistance (SNAP, Section 8 housing, Medicaid, etc.) so while 'price tags' seem to be less than the corner supermarket or hardware store, when all is said and done the company costs ALL taxpayers far more than shoppers are aware of.

So, their prices ARE NOT cheaper because of all the hidden costs to the taxpayers.

“Crap wages! Crap benefits! No pension! Employee intimidation! Employees missing teeth! Billion dollar company and no dental plan! Yea,,,they rock. Nice that you have a flagship store there,,,our Walmarts are dirty, weirdos in the parking lots, no security, unstocked shelves, old chickens in the heater box, beef that I don't know where it comes from, eggs that I don't know where it comes from, milk that I don't know where it comes from. And lets take away all their taxpayer provided subsidies and see how cheap the products are??? But hey all is good because your Walmart rocks!”

homesick12 on May 16, 2014 at 23:55:32

“REALLY! And I'll bet money about 90% of their employees are on state aid because they don't make a living wage AND don't get enough hours to get a decent pay check.”
