Oprah Opens Up About Her Choice Not To Become A Mother

Oprah Opens Up About Her Choice Not To Become A Mother

Commented Dec 13, 2013 at 17:53:04 in Black Voices

“I read somewhere that Oprah did give birth to a son when she was in her teens, but that the baby died. Is this just a myth? Or has Oprah spoken about it somewhere?”

“she's talked about it....written about it....and has had the story exploited by all of her favorite (not) relatives.”

Debora Spar, Barnard President, Says Women Can't Have It All -- And Shouldn't Even Try

“Finally some honesty. It's such a relief to hear from someone so effective in so many spheres that she can't have it all. Expectations are so high for women now that we're in a constant state of assessing and evaluating whether or not we're living up to some invisible, immutable perfection; in the work place, in our homes and in our bodies. Last night my daughter (who is 11) had insomnia just thinking about the beginning of her week. I was feeling impatient because she wanted me to lie down with her and snuggle her so she could fall asleep and I really wanted to go to my own bed. But then I stopped to think about everything she's doing; maintaining straight As in the 6th grade having just started middle school, playing Little League softball two-three days a week and taking piano lessons one day a week, not to mention social engagements. And as I thought about my child's schedule I realized she's carrying a heavy load. So I told her she doesn't have to go to all of her various practices and it's ok if she doesn't get straight As and then we snuggle until we both fell asleep. Life is so much more than the treadmill.”

“Man I love these. I especially love the tummies that have what now-look-to-me like baby prints walking across them. You actually managed to make me -- if only for the briefest of moments -- proud of that little tummy roll just beneath my navel which is where both of my babies lounged for 9 months each. I always want my tummy to be flat and -- now it seems to me -- barren. But my tummy has earned its stripes and I can see it in the faces of my children today. Thank you!”

“Hi Jamie -- First let me say I'm sorry for your struggle.  It's impossible for those of us who don't struggle with mental illness to understand it.  We look at behavior, not the underlying pathology.  Like with so many things, knowledge is power.  We can't just look away anymore and hope for the best.”

“Hi Liza -- I'm so sorry for what you face with your son. As a mother of two girls the shootings have sunk me into a morbid, nihilistic state. I've stopped reading the news and am very close to canceling my aol account because I don't want to see any more images from Sandy Hook. But reading your story moved me because it puts a face on Adam Lanza and the struggle his mother must have had with his mental illness. We have to look for the deeper meaning in these stories and ask ourselves what we, as a society, need to change. We're only as strong as our weakest link and the fact we have no recourse to keep the mentally ill safe, and society safe from them, is short-sighted, foolish and ultimately tragic. I'd be grateful for any advice from any of the HuffPo readers about where to start? How to start? Both for mental health care initiatives and stricter gun laws.”

Jamie Lynn Morris on Dec 17, 2012 at 04:01:30

“As a person with mental illness for 20 years. It is important to note that when we do get help the mental health industry often forgets that a newly diagnosed person is going to go through the 5 stages of grief. The second stage being anger. With anger people either internalize it and kill themselves or lash out. So in addition these individuals need to learn coping skills not only for their anger, but for the public back lash they are going to feel when something heinous like this tragedy occurs”

“She can't help being attractive, nor the fact that people pay more attention to attractive people.  And why is she an exhibitionist for nursing in a photograph?  Images are powerful.  She had the opportunity to advocate for a marginalized child-rearing philosophy on a public platform.  I'm not an Attachment Parent, but I am an advocate of gays right to marriage and women's right to choose.  If I had a public forum to support these beliefs I would use it.  If you had an opportunity to raise public awareness for a belief you were passionate for you wouldn't turn it down.  Jamie isn't interested in modeling.  She's been offered a reality show which she turned down.  The bottom line is no one knows her.  Everyone sees things through the filter of their own experience and anonymity online allows people to be vicious in ways they would never be face to face.”

Lady Cham on Sep 11, 2012 at 22:24:09

“No, I'd let her know how I felt if she ripped her breast out in front of my sons.  We know this is her second time on a cover - where's the real women promoting this cause? It's still exhibitionism at the end of the day.  If I ripped out my 38D breasts out in front of other people's children to feed my 3 year old [both sons were off formula by age 1], someone would rightfully be appalled by it.   Breasts are sex organs when not producing milk.  Topless bars need special licenses even in Vegas.  How many of you BF activists would approve of topless car washes held in public venues?  A breast is a breast and exposing one shouldn't be ever wrong no matter the situation if you truly believe your cause.  Breasts are natural or are they when only full with milk?”

“Jamie's intent is to make AP mainstream.  She just got back from Ethiopia where she's started a non-profit organization to help orphans from AIDS.  Narcissistic is the last thing she is.”

Lady Cham on Sep 11, 2012 at 19:48:33

“Keep telling yourself that while the rest of us see it for what it is. Tons of people do charitable work and do not seek attention as it is coming from their heart.  She's just seeking a reality show and/or modeling career. Couldn't an average woman be an AP advocate and write a comprehensive story?    Why an attractive women playing exhibitionist?”
