Rand Paul Filibusters John Brennan Nomination

Rand Paul Filibusters John Brennan Nomination

“He has repeatedly filibustered the Patriot Act. As well as NDAA.

And the purpose of this is to bring ATTENTION to the issue. Look at Google News. Twitter Trends. This has exploded into a nationwide debate over civil liberties. People see "Guy Speaks for 8 hours against Drone Murder" and take a peek. And they're scared of what they see.

The difference is that the Patriot Act was introduced by Bush (and then resigned by Obama and the Democrats). Targeted killing wasn't available to Bush, it is a pure Obama policy. It's no surprise that people like you rail against one and support the other.

So naturally, liberals will try to distract attention from their hypocrisy on civil liberties.”

“Really? Go read Holder's letter instead of parroting the WH defense. It clearly states that, while the government has no desire to, the government CAN and WILL execute Americans with drones in rare, but potential, situations.

Translation: all the government needs to do is say a Pearl Harbor or 9/11 is imminent and it can kill whoever it wants.

Where are all the Democrats who called Bush a fascist- rightly so- for the Patriot Act, Iraq and Afghan Wars, and torture? Cowering in Obama's corner spouting off lame justifications and counterattacks.”

“Since you clearly are ignorant in Paul's background, both Ron and Rand Paul have repeatedly voted against the USAPATRIOT Act, against the Afghan and Iraq Wars, against NDAA, against torture.

He's one of the few who stood up against a President of his own party. Something that Democrats are obviously incapable of doing.”

“He's filibustering a man who has overseen the TORTURE, ILLEGAL DETENTION, and TARGETED MURDER of citizens across the globe.

I don't care if we don't have government for 10 years if it stops this man from taking over the CIA!”

“I disagree with your assement of Brennan, and as for Paul he is doing this for himself. If the Republicans were in control they would be asking the same questions, where is he coming from?”

“Thank you for your service sir. That sounds just too cool! I've been researching the nuclear triad over the past month and have been truly moved by the power of these instruments, and how they were so quaintly stored in North Dakota fields.”

IndyGuy on Jan 24, 2013 at 21:49:17

“yeah, it was a perfect place to have them deployed because we were close to a town in ND which was the geographic center of North America.  If a nuke war started it would take Russian missiles longer to strike there, and the same with the B52's and KC-130 tankers and F15 fighters.

I'm glad now that most of those weapons are no longer active as well as the nuke loaded B52s.  When your 19 years old it's kind of mind blowing to know that if a nuke war started you'd only have 30 minutes to live.  As my old boss said...if the missiles and bombers are flying then he was going home to get his lawn chair, grab a beer and watch the fireworks.”

“Has anyone here actually read this bill? I am not a Republican or Boehner-supporter. But I am ardently against the blind, knee-jerk reactions that prevail whenever a tragedy or crisis comes up. Look at 9/11. The Patriot Act was rammed through with no debate whatsoever- because we had given the government a blank check to go all out on terrorism.

Now we are hearing calls from all the politicians, all the representatives, pleading for money for their districts. Why don't we analyze this bill! There are billions in earmarks, there are millions for Chuck Schumer to "inspire fishery growth", there are millions for Bob Menendez to "enhance NJ schools." THIS IS A VOTE BUYING BILL. If you want to help these people out, send a lump sum of money to the town governments and have THEM appropriate it. 60 billion dollars! That is a ton of money, people.”

“You haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about. 40 years ago you could buy a firearm at the grocery store. Every boy had a .22 rifle, and every father a shotgun. We live in an age where 1 in 5 Americans suffer from a mental disorder. Half the people are jacked up on Adderol, Xanex, or Valium. It's the population that's deteriorated, not gun safety.”

“Why do you support a President who has led us to the brink of war with Iran, continuing the policies of his predecessor. He, too, has re-signed the Patriot Act, among so many other things. This is wrong, and you know it. But you won't act on it until you separate yourself from the plantation.

The problem is, people like YOU will vote for whoever keeps the government checks coming. You trust the government to always act in your interests- you don't want to look things up yourself. You don't want to do the math, and realize that the trillions of dollars we spend on foreign intervention- much of which has been continued by your beloved President- just won't balance itself out. YOU are as much responsible for the continuation of the system that is screwing our country over. You are guilty of high-handed ignorance, which if left unchecked will eliminate any defense our liberties we have left.

Libertarians don't want a regulation-free market. They want a market that is fair, a market driven by the people. And it is the people that give the government its power. If everyone wants regulation, then let's do regulation. If everyone wants war with Iran, let's do it. But those decisions should be left up to Congress, and subsequently the people, with our knowledge that we must not let two wolves and a lamb vote on what's lunch. That is the ever-balancing act of Democracy.”

“Your candidate is no better. You don't want to recognize his irrational foreign policy, his sabre-rattling against Iran, and his refusal to recognize civil liberties. All you want to accept is that he'll keep the government checks coming, and for that, I hold you in the deepest contempt. A vote for Obama is plain SELFISHNESS. A vote for Romney is...., well, stupidity. The point is, both of them want to continue screwing over our country with these insane policies. And people like you continue to live in a delusional fantasy, thinking that the your half of the two-party system is the right way. It's not. How on earth are we supposed to have what we desire for our country if there are TWO choices?”

“What really enrages me is Democrats' hypocrisy on this. I stood with them when they attacked Bush for neoconservative foreign and domestic policies and his love of war. But his predecessor, who has continued and expanded these policies, is somehow immune to it. Had Bush been the one in office today, he would have been lambasted as a fascist. But somehow, Obama is simply the political genius moving to keep us safe, with these calculated drone attacks. American citizens ought to outraged at this blatant violation of any human morality, and even more outraged that drones are being produced for use above our homeland. Until I see a Declaration of War against Afghanistan, until I see a direct authorization for these drones and strikes, I will view them as merely instruments of execution from a government's secret police.”

Protocolor on Jan 10, 2013 at 08:45:31

“Part of the problem is that everybody Obama taps for an appointment causes the far right to break out in shrill choruses of "Socialist!" and "Pacifist!", which are things that don't have such strong negative connotations to the rest of America. Even though the appointee is not a socialist or a pacifist, and is in fact the complete opposite, the far right screech out those labels anyway.

Now, what you may not realize is that among Democratic voters there are some low information types as well. They may not be as low information as what is typical among Republican voters, but they don't pay as much attention as they should nonetheless. These folks get distracted by the cacophony from the right wing nuts and figure "Hmm, this pick of Obama's might be OK."

In other words, the blunt stupidity of the right is partially responsible for driving people who wouldn't otherwise to support Obama and his actions.”
