Karen Armstrong On The Golden Rule That Ties All Religions Together (VIDEO)

“The only "rule" that matters is the need to survive as a species. Everything humans do is predicated on the universal desire to do whatever it takes to make sure the species survives. That "rule" applies to every living thing from humans to bacteria.”

relevancematters on Dec 4, 2013 at 09:29:04

“Well certainly this may be the ultimate objective behind humanity's universal cultural discovery and application of the "rule" but it doesn't change the fact that (1) conscientious use of the directive makes the human experience a lot better than primal and perpetual wars for domination, or (2) that we are applying the rule in a very small part of a vast physical design that is too large and complex for us to define. You're simply looking at two separate magnifications, or manifestations, of the same thing.

Now if we could just apply it to perpetuating the survival of the planet while we impose upon it!”

“The never-funded wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will ultimately cost us around 6 trillion dollars. Let's see the GOP do the patriotic thing and ask all Americans to make a financial sacrifice and finally take on the tax burden to pay for those conflicts and fund the care that many of the soldiers who fought for us will need in the next five or six decades. Oh...yeah. I forgot. Republicans, much as they claim is true of Democrats, like to have their cake and eat it too. Just don't ask them to pay for it.”

By the way, according to Business Week, since Obama took office we've seen "...a dramatic improvement in the federal government’s fiscal position. The budget deficit as a share of gross domestic product fell from 10.4 percent in 2009 to 6.7 percent in 2012, and it’s on track to get down to 3.7 percent in 2015, according to the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg."”

“The Affordable Care Act will have no effect on the health care that the "rich" receive. Do you honestly think they'll go shopping for health plans? The "rich" can afford the very best care as is. However, for blue collar and middle class folks, most of them will now pay less for better care, including the 45 million to whom insurance companies refused to give coverage previously. My wife retires in five months. She loses her health care when she does. Without the ACA, she will pay about $375 a month for a mediocre plan. With the ACA, she will pay about $150 a month and receive a better plan.”

“Yes...I agree! We MUST get back to a health care for profit system. We MUST get back to a system that was the most expensive in the world and one that provided increasingly mediocre care except for the wealthy. We MUST get back to a system where the primary physician for blue collar workers was the doctor in the emergency room. We MUST get back to a system where more than 45 million Americans couldn't afford health insurance. We MUST get back to a system that was reactive instead of proactive. We MUST get back to a system where insurance premiums increased annually anywhere from 10-85% and threatened to bankrupt the nation. We MUST get back to a system where a single catastrophic illness destroys a family financially forever. We MUST get back to a system where an insurance company can drop one's coverage after one suffers a serious illness. We MUST get back to a system where a person cannot find coverage if he or she already suffers from an illness. REPEAL the Affordable Care Act NOW! If Obama is for it, we MUST be against it!”

“Yeah, we need to get back to the Republican vision of insurance-based health care for profit. You know, the one where health insurance companies would simply decide that it would be more cost effective to deny claims for one flimsy reason or another than pay for the treatment of someone who was seriously ill. The one that was too expensive for 45 million Americans to afford. The one where health costs were rising from 8-100% ANNUALLY and threatening to destroy the country financially. The one that refused to aid those with pre-existing health conditions. The one that allowed insurance companies to drop you if you dared to make an expensive claim. The one where America pays more for health care per capita than any other industrialized country in the world yet has the most uninsured citizens. The one where an estimated 26,000-45,000 die every year for a lack of health insurance and many thousands more go bankrupt from paying for catastrophic care? That one? Yeah...let's get back to that system.”

“So wait...God is all-powerful and all-knowing and created the universe. That means God knows everything that will ever happen and has known since the moment of creation. That means if someone is gay, that's because God made that person gay. If someone lives his or her entire life in some faraway isolated land and never even knows who Jesus is in the first place, that means God made this person specifically so God could condemn that person to everlasting darnation? Wow!”

“No one is "born" that way. Environmental and mental factors play a role. A mother who encourages her little boy to wear heels, try on makeup, and wear dresses...factors. We all have the freedom of choice. I'm NOT a phobe, and I believe everyone is entitled to equal human rights. God still loves and accepts everyone. The bible clearly states that God will forgive anyone for anything they've done in the past. So no, God does not "create these people to condemn them."”

Celiak8 on Oct 3, 2013 at 10:49:41

“Um, no? I used to live in a country where lots of people doesn't even know who Jesus is. That is exactly why we have to share the Good News; that Jesus has born to save every people that trust and accept Him. If they doesn't know who Jesus is, that is most definitely not their fault nor they're condemned. It's our fault for not sharing the good news even though we were told to do it. (Matt 28:19 and Mark 16:15)”

DarthDerisive on Oct 3, 2013 at 10:41:29

“No. What people miss is that Jesus' death covered it all. So that person on the isolated island is already forgiven. The Bible makes this clear but there's no power to wield from it so its swept under the rug.”

“You forgot... says the Physician turn Politician Rand Paul. Cut from the same medical provider cloth that sees patients as ATMs, where no price is high enough when it comes to what doctors expect anyone to be willing to pay when it comes to their health.

If you are not willing to leverage your home equity, your kid's college savings, your own retirement to fund a procedure or treatment, you must not value your health, or you must be faking.

When health care and health insurance became a status thing, pricing of each were no longer tied to the value they provided to those who consumed it.

Just became, can you afford or not? As always, the wealthy were fine.... phew.”

“If no law was passed that wasn't supported by 100% of our lawmakers, no laws would ever be passed. How was "Obamacare" passed "deceitfully"? Did the democrats do it while the republicans were all in the bathroom or something? What's your alternative, by the way? Go back to the healthcare for profit system that was the most expensive on Earth and yet was annually becoming less and less accessible and increasingly inept? The republicans say they have an alternative. Uh...why didn't they present the alternative previous to the president offering his own alternative to a broken system? They had decades to do so. And yet they seemed quite satisfied to keep the status quo in place. Are you aware what the republican system will entail? I'll bet you haven't a clue. I'll tell you this...it will raise insurance costs at an even higher rate than previous to Obamacare. And fewer and fewer people will be able to afford it. However, the good thing is rich people who profit from high cost, dysfunctional health care will become even richer. So there is that. And as far as journalists who "prop up a president no matter how bad they (sic) they hurt a nation"...well, President Cheney and his pal almost destroyed America with their "God"-inspired actions over the eight years of their reign. Why don't you ask the journalists who propped them up?”

“In response to folks who castigated the school system because they would do nothing or because the school system wouldn't allow her to discipline the offending children, I'm confident that the school will discipline these children, but of course only to the extent that they're allowed to do so by the parents who hold the threat of legal action over the heads of the school's administrators. As far as wondering why she didn't or couldn't exercise more discipline on the bus, she was probably smart enough to understand that, again, at least some of the children's parents would likely challenge her or the school system legally for just about any action she took to discipline the children. I must say I do find it amazing how many astoundingly good parents are on this comment board...in my own experience in public schools I found that the great majority of parents practice very little discipline with their own children and in fact don't even interact with them all that much, ever.”
