Lupita Nyong'o Is Summertime Fine At The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

Commented Jun 1, 2014 at 20:48:00 in Style

“It's so ironic that Lupita has this halo around her as if she were a representative of "the wretched of the earth" when, in fact, she's been an upper-class preppy all her totally privileged life. Poor whites in Arkansas have had infinitely tougher lives than Lupita, who truly belongs at a polo match sponsored by a champagne maker, not on a poster lamenting the abuse of black women. I write this as a white Southern liberal who's supported the black quest for justice here and around the world all my life. The truth remains that Lupita has led a totally pampered existence all her life, not least in getting such a plum role in 12 Years virtually straight out of Yale. YALE!!”

pearlx2 on Jun 5, 2014 at 11:06:51

“Why can't a person who's had a "totally privileged life" (as you put it) have a "halo" around her? The halo is there because of who she is and how beautiful she is; neither she nor anyone writing about her has ever pretended that she was something other than what she is.

In fact, most people would be surprised to know that she comes from a privileged background because of her HUMILITY and EMPATHY -- things we certainly don't usually see in the privileged. That alone makes her special, not to mention her tremendous talent and obvious intelligence.

Any accolades she gets, she has earned through hard work. She's not just beautiful, she's special!”

jessicadevyn on Jun 1, 2014 at 23:59:21

“Is this post sarcastic? Duh there are upper class black people, it's the 21st century. Lupita has been on many ritzy ad campaigns. No one has ever represented her as downtrodden and I have never seen any misrepresentations about her life. If someone wants to assume she is downtrodden just because she is black http is their problem. Lupita isn't even American, she is Kenyan background and born in Mexico. Sorry that the fact that not all black people are poor is news or shocking to you.”

“As always, our political problem is that Archie Bunker believes the lies the Republicans feed him because he wants to. All he cares about is opposing the "liberal elites" who "look down on him," no matter how much opposing those liberals ruins him economically, and wrecks the economic and ecological futures of his kids and grandkids. But it's good that Picketty is not taking these ridiculous right-wing, fat-cat attempts to undermine his argument with lies lying down. Those with more intelligence and self-esteem than the Bunkers will listen to reason.”

“As a male totally on the side of equality for women, I think it's past time for women, the MAJORITY of voters, to start taking up for themselves politically. The Republicans can only get away with their endless outrages against women because their mostly MALE base apparently VOTES in larger percentages in off-year elections than women do. When will women stop victimizing themselves by either voting Republican or being too lazy and clueless to vote at all. MALE NRA members always vote, ladies. You need to get your rears in gear and OUTVOTE the jerks, once and for all! You are NOT a "minority." Your freedom is 100% in your voting hands. If you blow that, it's your fault, and it makes me mad. America would be much better off with women taking MUCH more political power than they ever have before. DO IT!”

That has been the culture of the world up til the last 100 years.

Remember we gave Black males the right to vote before women....

“I'm a liberal Dem white male who's totally pulling for women in their decades-long struggle for equality. I'll vote for Hillary for sure, though I'd much, much prefer Warren. That said, it's well-known that many Asian-American students who made straight-A's in school often fall behind European-Americans in the workplace because of social intangibles that have a huge effect on interpersonal workplace--as opposed to classroom--achievement. Women like Asian-Americans may be less smoothly and relentlessly aggressive than men at work, for one thing. Great grades are great, but women have to compete evenly with men in the actual office rat race in order to have the same level of achievement, and pay, there, where the rubber really meets the road. Whether women as a group, and Asian-Americans, are psychologically equipped to compete evenly remains to be seen.”

“This is a great debate to have over the Vets. The bottom line, on the face of it, is the unwillingness of Congress, led by the Republicans, to gigantically expand the VA's capacity to properly care for all the vets from Bush's wars. That would require--gasp!--both expanding "big government" AND raises taxes to pay for an "entitlement," namely providing an adequate health safety net for vets. Nothing in contemporary America has been more grotesque than the Republicans' campaign to privatize care for the vets these same Republicans got blown apart in the first place. Rather than taxing fat cats to raise the money required to treat our vets right, the Republicans have launched "Wounded Warriors" to get private citizens to pay a small part of the bill the Republicans are doing all in their power NOT to pay with public tax money. Disgusting.”

These days, Puritans appear in lynch mobs on the PC left as well as the right. It does a disservice to he advance of women to ever defend a woman who was fired because of poor performance. That's like Chicken Little or crying "Wolf!"
