“Since the death of Tim Russert, I stopped watching the Sunday morning talk shows. Politicians from each side recite their talking points without being challenged. Tim Russert would have statistics and the politician's own words to challenge these assertions. Once the politicians got off the talking points, there were real answers to the questions. I have been reading the coverage of the problems in WV in the Washington Post. They have reported the facts of the story but not the implications of this small leak. I was reading about the logistics of getting water to these folks. It sounds like Charleston and the surrounding area were closed for business. We depend on fresh.water for everything. Besides the health issues and inconvenience, this will have a devastating economic consequence. I thought of an article a few months back concerning the issue of proposed fracking in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia. This is the watershed for many major cities. Imagine if this watershed were tainted cutting of water for millions of people. In WV we are seeing the impact of such an event for a few hundred thousand folks. We are seeing the logistical nightmare of the Federal government getting water to a few hundred thousand folks. Imagine the consequences if this were a few million folks. The media seems to be ignoring the true implications of this event. This should be working as an wake up call. It seems like it is business as usual.”

IndyDemoCan on Jan 13, 2014 at 13:54:17

“Rachel Maddow is the new Tim Russert as far as I'm concerned. She teaches, explains and makes people understand what is really crucial in any news story she covers, and often, they are important stories that nobody else is even talking about.”

pdxbuckeye on Jan 13, 2014 at 13:49:51

“Tim was pretty bad the last few years. He was too wrapped up in the politics and not the news side so much. Most of our newsertainment is really just politics. At least MSNBC admits it, but they are all political spin shows. Covering the spin war and nothing else, facts, news, none of the rest of it matters, just the politics.”

“Why isn't the United Kingdom on your list? They have the very strictest of gun laws. This isn't the days of muskets, the honest citizen you talk about wouldn't be able to stand up to an organized military force. You could have your assault rife but a Cobra helicopter would fill you full of 2000 holes in less than a minute. I have faith in the kids who are our citizen soldiers. They would never stand for our armed forces to repress our citizens. We do live in a democracy. I don't see any democracies on your list. I wonder why? Think about it.”

“I think we are giving away our leverage with this deal.  With no deal, taxes go up automatically.  Why should we make concessions on something that is going to happen anyway?  Wait until after the first of the year when the taxes go up.  You then give the Republicans  the 400K deal in return for the debt ceiling agreement. ”

“I can't say that I'm happy about this deal. I understand that a lot of folks and the economy as a whole will be hurt by no deal. I wish the President would have insisted that the debt ceiling will be part of the deal. In a few months, the Republicans will have him over a barrel with the debt ceiling. They don't care how badly it hurts our country when the countries credit is called into question. The President will have to give up more than he otherwise would . Myself, I hope this deal falls through. The President has loss all leverage.”

“I bet you that they suggest that! Their solution to everything is to arm up. They want it like the wild west where everyone carried firearms. In my state (Virginia) you have the conceal and carry laws where you can have a holster on when you go to a restaurant. To me, it takes a disturbed individual to want to show up at a restaurant packing a firearm. Either this person is afraid of everything or is looking for a reason to use it (George Zimmerman).”

“That's true and there would also be some defense cuts. I hope after the cliff, the President does not put the defense cuts back on the table. DOD is an entitlement program for filthy rich defense contractors. We out spend all the other countries combined so we will still be strong after the cuts. I also don't want him to put the cola for SS back on the table. That deal is gone. i would like to see the FICA cap removed so all income is subject to that tax. I do agree with the Republican Senator that it does enhance the President position in negotiations. I don't agree with him that the President wanted this to happen . He was conceding the SS cola change and changing the age requirements for Medicare. Both of these proposals were not popular with his base. Those are not the actions of a man who doesn't want a deal. The President was giving the republicans a great deal in 2011. They rejected it. The Speaker asked for that deal after the election but the President said that deal was gone. Last week, the President offered another great deal and the Speaker went to Plan B. After the cliff, that deal will not be available. I hope they learn to stop while you are ahead and take a good deal!”

“Their goal is to represent to firearms manufacturers to sell more guns. They could care less about folks being killed. They hope their members and conservatives in general will agree with them and this movement will go away. As the conservative newspapers demonstrated, we have reached a tipping point and something must be done. This could be a very good but but it is a shame that it took these tragedies to get us to this point. It is just so sad.”

“I'm a Democrat, liberal, Catholic who attends weekly Mass. I watched the two clips and thought they were funny. Tonight I'll light my tree and my outside lights. I will freely go to Mass tomorrow evening and on Christmas eve. Yes, there might be some atheist who attack religion. Yes, there might be some right wing nuts who say that you are warring against Christmas if you say Happy holiday. As far as I'm concerned, those are flip sides of the same coin. Myself, I'm going to celebrate Christmas. This year will be a very solemn occasion. I hope we can all dedicate it to those who were loss and say special prayers for them and their families.”

“People change over time. I give Joe a lot of credit for looking at the party he loves and knowing it's going in the wrong direction. Joe has small kids and has empathy for those poor parents that lost their kids. He realizes that we have reached a tipping point and this will not be getting better unless we look at things on multiple fronts. No one can justify having an assault rife and clips of 30 bullets. I heard last night that the gunman in Aurora had a drum type clip with 100 bullets. I think Joe is still the conservative guy we like but disagree with a lot of the time. He's sane and knows this can't go on.”

“I think we all forget that the Democrat party now is what the Republican party use to be years ago. Both parties have gone to the right. The Republic party went to the extreme right and the Democratic Party could be described as right of center. They are the lesser of two evils and that is why they won. For this reason, we should not follow lock step with what they do and say. I hate to say it but we should take lessons from the Tea party. If they pursue these kind of policies, maybe we as progressives should use the threat of running someone against them in the Democratic Primaries. Right now, they take us for granted because they know we will complain a lot but fall in step and vote for them in the next election. They know we are not going to vote for some right wing nut. Let's make them less secure and take a page out of the Tea Party playbook! I'm also amazed that the Democrats don't give any raw meat to their base. How can they expect to energize us in 2014 to take back the house with these policies?”

“Everything you say is true! I get so frustrated by our corporate media where they act like we are getting a great deal by changing the CPI on SS benefits and repealing the Bush tax cuts for those making 400K or less. There are a lot of things that could be put on the table (defense cuts, eliminating the FICA cap, allowing medicare to negotiate with drug companies) that aren't even mentioned by the media. They act like this is a crisis and if we don't settle for these things all will be lost. If the Tea party can hold out, why can't we? We make it clear to the politicians that there are more of us and this will not go away. We want more than the same stale solutions that have been offered. I love our President but we must also push him very hard. Myself, as it stands now, let's go off the cliff. I know there will be folks hurt but in the long run it is better to stand up now. We want more than the scraps off the table that they feed us!”

“I'm ready for more extreme measures on the debt ceiling. Now, may be time to test its constitutionality. It's stupid to have a vote on whether we pay our bills. Congress already appropriated and spent the money so that is enough. I read a article where they could mint a platinum coin worth 1 trillion and deposit it in the treasury. That would head off the debt ceiling. Maybe, in 2014, the Democrats can take the House and we can introduce legislation which repeals the law to have a debt ceiling vote. It is stupid law and up until Obama took office of no consequence. The debt ceiling would be passed on an overwhelming basis. Of course, folks voted against it as a protest vote but they knew it would pass. It's just insane to threaten the faith and credit of our country.”

“I wish more gun owners were like you. If you are a member of the NRA, please let your views be known. There is no justification for any individual having this much firepower. I'm very uncomfortable with the conceal and carry laws in many states. I was at a restaurant last summer where a guy came in with a gun strapped on. I knew nothing about this individual or even whether his firearm was properly secured. I just don't think you need a firearm to go and eat at Bob Evans. I could see if the guy was law enforcement but he didn't look it. I would just like a little common sense and sanity in our gun law.”

I'm for a strong defense but we have created an entitlement program for defense contractors. We spend all this money on defense but we still hear all these stories how our brave soldiers who served are not getting the help they need. It's all about getting more money for the very rich. How much money does one need? It's just pure greed and it is ruining our country.”
