Dad in My Mirror

“While I agree wholly with your belief that little girls should be encouraged to focus on traits other than physical beauty alone, I do believe that Ms. Quinlan was targeting self-esteem as it relates to internal body image (as detailed in the opening of her blog) and one of the ways in which her lovely father provided the sustenance to nourish a healthy perspective. I do not believe that she made any mention that this was the only way in which he provided reassurances. We are very fortunate who have (and in my case, had) a father as supportive and loving as Mary Lou's.”

“@belyeu: Totally agreed. Finnegan taunted him and provoked the brawl. It was reported in the Houston Chronicle that, seconds before the play, Finnegan shouted to the Texans' bench, "Watch this".

@FredKnowsBest: Right you are. In a SportsIllustrated poll, Finnegan was voted the 6th Dirtiest Player in the NFL. He responded with gratitude and said that he hoped to one day be THE absolute dirtiest player in the league.

Johnson's exudes class, on and off the field. An educated sports fan can't argue this.”

When Your Sibling Dies

“i'm extending my empathy, as i can relate with you and your article on so many levels. i, too, have experienced more than my share of loss, first my grandparents (in elementary), then my father (in junior high)... then, my mother (when i was 25). i, being the youngest of 4 with an almost 16 year age gap between me and the oldest, am faced with the reality that, if all happens in a natural succession, i will have to experience the loss of my siblings. this terrifies me. but, as you can relate, experiencing such losses and being so rudely and abruptly reminded that life is erratic and doesn't owe anything to us suggests that we sieze every opportunity to show those we care about how much we love them. reading your editorial gently nudged me to place those phone calls to remind them what they mean to me and how much i appreciate having them in my life. thank you, irene.”
