A Year After Newtown, Rift Over Guns Deepens

A Year After Newtown, Rift Over Guns Deepens

“Many of these assailants were clearly mentally ill, but had never sought psychiatric care. Yes, there is a need for increased, readily available mental health services at affordable prices, but only someone who recognizes his/her own instability will seek it....most won't! And I am a licensed mental health professional.”

“Two things we can do to address this catastrophe:

1) Start understanding that we need to address mental illness in other ways than the volatile solutions of Big Pharma.

2) Ladies, start understanding that the men in your lives do not respond well to having their masculinity undermined wholesale. I have yet to meet a man who does not respond to authentic respect. Modern feminism needs a serious facelift. and a reality check. We are all in this together. I am a survivor of abuse, but I do not lay the blame for that at the foot of mankind only, womankind has a lot to overcome but also much to answer for. If you kick any animal in the teeth enough one day he will bite back. Men are no different, and no less worthy of respect for their agency and boundaries. If every woman in the world woke up to a body coursing with testosterone, they would change certain behaviors in a hot minute.”

“Really Doctor? I am a diagnosed schizoaffective. Dishing out heavy duty antipsychotics and SSRIs is not "healing." They provide a way for Big Pharma to line its pockets and for society to marginalize and sedate a great many of its most abused demographics. Those of us with mental illness need help, fresh air, good food, less stress, the company of animals, physical exercise, skilled CBT, community and compassion, not the latest FDA approved chemical lobotomy. The recent results of a 15 year study by U of Ohio shows an undeniable link between antipsychotics and loss of brain matter in addition to the well documented other massive physical side effects. For anyone interested, just google Prof. Nancy Andreasen who published these findings in the Sept 2013 issue of The American Journal of Psychiatry.

Another statistic:

" At least 31 school shootings and/or school-related acts of violence have been committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs resulting in 162 wounded and 72 killed (in other school shootings, information about their drug use was never made public)."”

“Don't people have anything better to do than collect and fire guns? How about working with local charities, collecting food for the hungry, rescuing abused animals, reading a book?”

“Some of us do many of those things, but still own guns.”

turkeyhunter1960 on Dec 7, 2013 at 20:02:30

“Many gun owners volunteer to teach gun safety and run ranges for local police to train and shoot qualifications. Many hunters donate game meat to the needy. All shooters pay the excise taxes that support the Fish and Game departments across the US and DU supports migratory bird habitats all over the country.”

Suburban Sentinel on Dec 7, 2013 at 19:41:49

“We do those things too. Of course many of us shoot and train to protect ourselves and our families.”

chsmithjr on Dec 7, 2013 at 19:37:39

“And 70 yo grandmothers and young mothers protecting their lives and children because our forefathers knew the importance of the second amendment. Why is the discussion not on the criminal who perpetuates the crimes? The people have a right to defend themselves from criminals and as Washington and Jefferson stated even our own government if need be. Why is that so scarry? People are stupid and make mistakes, the only law I would support would be that first time buyers take a safety and deadly force training course before final purchase, other than that what we have on the books pretty well covers it.”

“Where do you get the idea that those two groups of activities are mutually exclusive? For example, I teach English composition and literature; I work with other writers to improve their craft, and I'm the author of two books and many stories. I also own and carry guns and practice shooting. That's among many other activities.”

“Then there are places which use metal detectors only, like courthouses....I'm not that gun savvy, but couldn't the clips be loaded after the person gets through with the plastic guns? In any case, this is the only pro-active measure the House has taken since 2010. (Excepting, of course, the 40+ votes to repeal Obamacare).”

JC555 on Dec 4, 2013 at 20:01:26

“The "clips"? No, clips are used to load magazines. Yes the magazines could be loaded after the checkpoint but that also assumes you managed to get the metal ammunition thru the checkpoint. As for this being a "pro-active" measure? hardly since this only renews an existing law. Which by the way has never been used to charge somebody with crime to date. This renewal is merely a way to stop the passage of harsher law to be proposed by the Senate.”

Penny File on Dec 4, 2013 at 19:53:13

“So what's the point? I can't think of anyone that would want one for anything other than a novelty item. Not something they would take to the range with them and shoot on a regular basis or more than once for that matter.

What's the law going to do anyway? 10 yrs from now you can ask anyone with one and they'll tell you they made it prior to the law going into effect. There's no serial numbers on homemade guns. One stop at Home Depot and a bit of tinkering with a few tools you could make a functioning gun for a few dollars. Homemade guns have never been a problem before, the day they do become a problem we have a whole lot bigger problems to worry about.”

“I can't explain it to you, but I can tell you that HP was the only one who could break my HP addiction, and believe me....they did. I used to check in at least once a day and used to get mad at myself for staying too long. Now, thanks to their new format, thanks to the 100% drop in comments in my notifications page, I stop in less than once a week, and I do believe that will stop completely once I find a social news site even remotely like the old HP format. The whole thing is now a senseless exercise.

“Sorry...it's lucky there's a king-sized bed in my house. Two German Shepherds and three cats...they take up most of the bed. The key is that every new animal coming into my house takes its place in the pet family and they become a pack. (Although I must admit that my German Shepherds like nothing better than a game of "chase" with the cats.).”

Dogs come from wolves and I really doubt wolves hung out snuggling with bobcats in the wild.”
