Senate's Nuclear Option Raises Stakes For 2014

Senate's Nuclear Option Raises Stakes For 2014

Commented Nov 23, 2013 at 15:51:38 in Politics

“The GOP will live or die with the ACA. If the law remains unpopular by late 2014, then the GOP will thrive. If the ACA turns out to do what the Democrats hope it will ,then the ACA will be a positive for the Dems. The next 12 months will be interesting. The only thing about the law that is certain is the website will progressively get better, and easier to use.”

“As open minded and liberal as I am, I can also count. And I tend to believe the actuaries that predict these things. So Mr. Trumka should go back to school, and learn that arithmetic is important. It is very obvious that both Medicare and Social Security need to balance long term outlays and funds required to pay out the benefits. I do not need Trumka saying obviously false statements. Those belong to the Tea Party. Liberals have to face facts. The facts are we are not funding these programs at a high enough rate to keep paying out the current benefits. How can he balance these two budgets?”

carol24343 on Oct 21, 2013 at 20:28:17

“So, in order to fund these two insurance programs, we need to raise the amount employees and employers pay into these funds. I do not need to have my benefits cut, nor should they be cut. Would the government cut federal employee retirement benefits? No, they would not. Would States, Counties and Cities cut their pension payouts to retirees? No they would not and are not.”

They lost the presidency, they lost seats in the Senate, where they were projected to take over, and they lost seats in the House, which is so favored for the GOP. The main issue was the ACA. Why do they not accept the results of an election?”

"There have been a total of 65,376,373 background checks conducted on Americans seeking to purchase firearms since February 2009, the first full month of President Barack Obama’s first term, CNSNews.com reports. To put that into perspective, the number of gun background checks under Obama outnumber the entire population of the U.K., which is estimated at about 61.8 million."”

“So if a cop is paid by fed dollars, that is bad, but if a cop is paid by state dollars, that is good?”

CassidyK on Mar 2, 2013 at 20:57:43

“Yes. How do you not see that?
Not a dime comes from Washington without strings.
As an example: Federal funding for transportation in Chicago stipulated the Cta train platforms be made wheel chair accessible. There was also a time factor.
This left the CTA unable to address a growing problem with the rail bed. Due to safety concerns speed limits were reduced repeatedly causing transit times to increase from 20 minutes to over 50.
By the time the rail bed issue was addressed it was to late for repair, replacement was necessary at much greater expense.  Not to mention the loss of 1 hour a day to commute time for thousands of people.
It was a federally imposed net lose in funds.
The fed is a mess.”

ylcalif on Feb 28, 2013 at 16:45:51

“The background checks automatically create a list.
Do you remember a couple of months ago (after the Sandy Hook killings), that a map of gun owners was released on the internet. Within hours, guns were stolen from homeowners. So, with each background check, the list is expanded. Here in California, background checks have been required for quite some time. Mexico knows those background checks are creating a list of gun owners . . . that is why they are asking our Senate for the list . . . they know it already exists in California.”

We spend at least 50% too much on the military, we can reduce military spending without making our country less safe. You want to help the armed forces, bring them home. And try to pay off the trillions in Iraq/Afghanistan war debts that were run up on the national credit card.”
