“As both a mother and fitness professional I am concerned both with the inactivity of some children as well as the overactivity of others. No doubt exercise is good...when done properly. I have worked with children in fitness for more than 20 years and I have a graduate degree in Kinesiology. I have worked with children from one year of age in pre-school creative movement classes through young adults looking for personal training. The emphasis on slender figures in the media, fad diets, fast food and the stigma of simply being a little overweight has taken a serious toll on our children. Too much exercise at any age can be a problem. While we should all stay active parents need to guard against a child becoming so caught up in fitness that they can think or do little else. Some have started weight lifting so young while their bones and connective tissue are growing at rapid rates that actual damage is done. While we may see some inactive, over weight children who do not eat right, I have found more children and families working hard to eat right and exercise who simply find that it's not enough. Now teens are turning to bariatric surgery.I think there is far more going on than meets the eye.”

“Actually it's still there in quite a few and the ones without are more mercury-lite as I like to say. Even when they supposedly took it out the doctors were not forced to throw out what they ahd. The shelf life for the vials is several years and we were finding mercury vaccines even 4 years after the supposed pull of mercury from the shelves.”

“1. You are right the sheet has changed. It does get updated.
2. I wanted to have a titer done on my children who had been repeatedly exposed to chicken pox but was told that titers would not take the place of vaccination for school requirements. I certainly never suggested they work 100%. That's exactly the point concerned parents are making. They know that.
3.I am referring to the 1980's and early 90's...not today. I am well educated on the subject. Before you call someone a liar think about it first. I am speaking of my own personal experiences.”

“Dyson most contracted measles years ago and in general they were healthier as well. The vaccine information sheets that I received in the pediatrician's office clearly stated that the DTP alone had a rate of 1 to 1000 for the encephalopathy, high fever, high pitched cry. Those numbers come from reports by doctors who we now know only reported at a rate of one in every ten at best. We don't know the true rate of damage from the vaccines because they have not bothered to track it. My children reacted severely over and over again...never reported. I had been given out of date info sheets that didn't even mention the NVICP or VAERS. I was told that vaccines were recommended for ACIP when they hadn't been (not yet at least) as in the varicella in the early 90's. I was told that titers didn't matter as far as school requirements were concerned. You name it and there was a lie for it coming straight from the mouth of the one person I trusted implicitly with the health of my children. He was not just a doctor, he was a family friend and he would apparently say anything to get us to use the shots despite the 106 degree fever and seizures. He later said, "I believe you have been blessed with children with sensitive nervous systems." So you go ahead and vaccinate, and rely on vaccines all you want. I am not stopping you.”

2. "I was told that titers didn't matter as far as school requirements were concerned"
Are you suggesting that we test people's antibody titers when they go to school to see if they got the vaccine? What if the vaccine doesn't work in them? Nobody says vaccines work 100%.
3. If you look at the information sheet there is a section called "how can I learn more?" considering that you're writing on an internet forum, it's safe to assume that you have access to internet. So you can just look at the CDC website if you are unsatisfied with the amount of information on the sheet.”
These stories are a dime a dozen if you want to truly get involved and open your eyes and ears to the needless suffering of others. I know of children who have contracted polio after repeated vaccination. I myself was left with an illness remarkably like polio after exposure to a child who came from overseas and had been vaccinated just weeks prior. Interestingly enough no one was paying attention.
I'll say it again. No one is stopping parents from getting their vaccines. Just keep them aways from my family. If the products were safe and effective they wouldn't be mandated because they would prove themselves on their own merit.”
I must say that I once in believed in vaccination and now feel that some of my own work in my younger years as a research assistant may very well have been the foundation for a diabetes vaccine. Having now witnessed the horrors of reactions and lived the nightmare myself I will never take that chance again. My mother was exposed to polio and had no more than the common cold. I have now seen children die and others left disabled after vaccination. This should be left to parents to decide, but sadly it is not. EVERY VACCINE IS FOLLOWED BY A MANDATE FOR ITS USE OR AT LEAST A COSTLY ATTEMPT.”

There is a grain of truth in the ocean of the sand of the Sahara Desert. Very rarely, but consistently, the weakened viruses used in Oral Polio Vaccine revert to a dangerous strain. Despite knowing that, the Oral Polio Vaccine was superior in other ways to Salk(Inactivated) Polio Vaccine so it was used worldwide for many years. In more recent years, countries that have eliminated endemic (not brought in from outside) Polio have switched to the Inactivated Polio Vaccine. Somewhat surprisingly, Japan still uses OPV.”

“I am with you. I once believed in vaccinations until we lived the nightmare of the horros of reactions. It is sad that most of us have to learn the hard way, and then we start doing research to understand what happened. Thank you for sharing.”
“The argument for vaccines applies to the wild type disease as well. We don't know the true numbers on either end. Reports are not filed and often parents don't even fully report back to even a nurse. Sometimes nurses don't pass all the information on to the doctors as has happened in our case, and then there are the doctors who will do whatever it takes to get you vaccinated.
Doctors appealed to my emotions with their own anecdotes about death from measles and chicken pox and so on. My children were reacting to every vaccine with severe encephalopathy yet they told me it couldn't possibly be caused by vaccines. The doctors don't even deny it now. They just had to get us vaccinated because according to our first GP, "vaccines are just too important". So your tax dollars will now help educate my special needs child along with everyone else's. In the meantime those who don't live with the issue can pretend this doesn't happen. They claim that their observations are science while ours are not. Their anecdotes are fine to tell and they are not scare tactics, while ours on the other hand are "emotional" pleas and horrifying scare tactics causing great harm to us all.
Sometimes you just have to call it like it is. The average pedi has $80,000 of vaccine stored in their office refrigerators. It's their business. One said to me, "I have to feed my family". Well I must protect mine.”

“Frankly, I question your truthfullness (or more likely your perception) regarding what you claim that doctors told you. Very few doctors would claim that an obvious reaction would not be caused by a vaccine, and vitrually no doctor would recommend a vaccine after a patient reported a serious reaction if there was even a chance that the reaction was vaccine related.
Most doctors make very little from vaccines. They would make far more in treating the diseases. That makes me question your "I have to feed my family" claim.
The truth is that for every claim of "vaccines hurt my child" there are counteless counterclaims that can be made from parents who had a child hurt by a vaccine preventable disease.”
“There are both killed and live virus vaccines used. Just because a nurse or doctor or drug company tells a patient or the public that they are receiving a killed virus vaccine they should always see for themselves and ALWAYS read the entire product insert. My mother was told she received l killed virus when indeed she was given live. She had a stroke and 6 months of what the doctor called "an odd case of pneumonia". She was under a specialists care for 6 months and they didn't know how to treat it. It just had to go away on its own.”
“I believe it. The only time my mother had the flu was after the shot. I have not had the shot but don't get the flu. Those who want the shot can have it, but they have no business dictating that we all get it.”

“The point is that it doesn't matter what you have "seen". Since no vaccine is 100% effective such stories are a certainty (and as cable points out below, often based on incorrect information). For every person who says, "I got the flu after getting the flu shot", there are examples of the opposite. What matters is the science. In this case, the science does show efficacy.
Your comment about the government "staying out of our personal lives" doesn't make much sense. The flu vaccine is not required of the general poplulation. To my knowledge it is not even required for schoolkids. Your statement about "leaving well enough alone" is not accurate either. Flu epidemics are not "well enough", so it is not desirable to "leave them alone" when there is a way to help reduce them. It is like saying that the government should "leave well enough alone" and not recommend that we use seatbelts (except that seatbelts are usually required by law and the flu vaccine isn't).
The vaccine is highly recommended by the government because it does help protect against the flu, saving lives and cutting down on hospitalizations. It also provides other advantages (for example, helping prevent outbreaks like the ones that have closed several schools in my area).”
“Attenuation of viruses is well established and as this article states the flu is one of the best at changing (ironically bordatella pertussis bacteria is another). It is the simple fact that influenza changes so readily that helps to explain why the vaccines do not work well each year. They are essentially obsolete before the season even starts. When one weighs the true benefits and risks of the shots one finds that the risks outweigh the benefits and thus low vaccination rates. When you watch your loved ones fall ill (and some even die) after that shot when they had walked into the office perfectly happy and healthy you think twice. Just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.”
cable1977 on Jan 26, 2011 at 15:09:45
“"It is the simple fact that influenza changes so readily that helps to explain why the vaccines do not work well each year"
It partially explains why vaccine may not work well. The data shows that if the vaccine is well matched to the circulating strain then there is good protection against infection. If it is not well matched then there is reduced protection against infection.
"When you watch your loved ones fall ill (and some even die) after that shot when they had walked into the office perfectly happy and healthy you think twice. "

All 2009 H1N1 strains infecting in the 2010-2011 flu season to date have been antigenically similar to the virus used in the vaccine.

About 90% of influenza B strains doing the infecting come from the family of viruses used in the vaccine

Bike Commuter on Jan 26, 2011 at 13:12:29
“The problem is that your argument is largely untrue, and the parts that are true are based on overextension.
In fact, the vaccines do typically work each year. That is to say they are effective at creating immunity or partial immunity in a significant percentage of those immunized. They are not "obsolete". What researchers do is work to predict the most likely strains that will circulate in the upcoming season. The efficacy varies from year to year based on how well that is predicted. However, efficacy is on average good.
When actual weighing of the benefist and risks is done, it is found that the risks of the disease do outweigh the very limited risks of the vaccine, and the benefits of vaccinating far offset any risk of the vaccine.
Appealing to emotion with arguments about "loved ones falling ill and dying" from vaccine, is common. It is also quite misleading. Death from the vaccine is very very rare. It is so rare that it is usually difficult to tell whether the vaccine was even related (and in some cases it is shown to be unrelated). Serious adverse reaction is also very rare. However, death from flu is not that rare, and serious complications from flu are quite common. Emotional appeals are quite easy to make about the flu as well. To use your own words, just because you don't know someone who has died or has been hospitalized from flu does not mean that it doesn't happen.”

“Which risks are you talking about associated with the flu shot? The flu shot used in the US is a killed virus, not a live attenuated virus -- you cannot become ill with flu from the shot. You might have a sore muscle, a low grade fever, or some aches, but you're being given an inactivated virus and will not become sick with influenza virus from the shot.”

As the mother of four who has followed the issue for over 10 years and talked with doctors and scientists I know that you are more likely to get the answers you need on the internet than in the average doctor's office, sad but true.

“When a parent reports that a child is allergic to peanut butter, do you respond with "Well that doesn't happen to me therefore it doesn't happen."”
cable1977 on Sep 23, 2010 at 15:49:49
“No, but there is scientific evidence that details allergic reaction to peanut butter. There is a causal mechanism to easily explain why an allergic reaction happens to peanut butter. Incidentally, there is also a causal mechanism to explain why one has an allergic reaction to vaccines as well.
But we are not talking about allergic reactions. We are talking about parents claiming their children became autistic due to vaccination. If a parent reported that their child became autistic after eating peanut butter would that also be of equal note? No, it would still be an anecdote, but if multiple parents made the same observation, then that would warrant testing the anecdote to determine if an scientific correlation between peanut butter and autism actually existed as opposed to simply an anecdotal one. That is what occurred with vaccines.
Multiple studies have attempted to find a correlation between vaccines and autism and each time one cannot be found, the anti-vax movement simply changes the goalposts, yet always insisting that it is the vaccines that are the causal agent without any actual evidence to support that claim.”
N0NDescript0 on Sep 23, 2010 at 15:18:40
Those are COMPLETELY different things. A food allergy can be experimentally confirmed in every single individual by using a DTH skin test. Additionally, there is a difference between a "food allergy" and a "food intolerance" (although I'm sure that most peanut allergies are indeed allergies).

“I beg to differ. They do occur elsewhere. I am very far from alone. It is a matter of whether or not it is accepted. These stories are far from anecdotal I can tell what is anecdotal however...the case of deadly measles that one doctor continually cited to persuade patients to use his product. When I asked him to give the family my name and number he was caught. He denied ever speaking of the family. I am sure that any family who has lost a child to measles or any other disease would not mind talking to a parent with questions. I speak with parents and doctors on a regular basis, sharing our story. That is why I tell parents to do the same and to video tape their experiences with vaccines. I am not asking you or anyone else to sympathize with me, only to do the proper research. If our review of medical records, tests, dates, symptoms is anecdotal then a large portion of your cited research becomes anecdotal as well. When it happens to you it is 100 %, and there are many thousands out there experiencing this right now.”

“Bottom line they continue to refuse to do the true study...double blind placebo vaccinated v. unvaccinated NOT vaccinated vs. less vaccinated. You and I and everyone else here educating the public on the dangers know this. The rest wants the public to skim over there posts and sites and not take a real look at the details. In my immunology class in the 80s I man petitioned the class. He came in and sat on the front row and asked the professor the tough questions. Our professor said that any parents who refused vaccines cared more about saving a few bucks than their own child's life or they were religious fanatics. He then went on to say that the double blind placebo trial was deemed unethical due to leaving a group unprotected. So they assumed safety from the start without actually looking at the issue. He had the room of students worked up and cheering him on. He moved on and the man that I now see as a dad with valuable information and experience did not return. Unfortunately I did not take it to heart well enough. Despite concern I still vaccinated.”
cable1977 on Sep 23, 2010 at 14:11:52
“Just out of curiosity, who is preventing the running of a double blind test?
How many of the doctors or scientists that the anti-vax folks regularly tout have attempted to write a grant requesting funding for a vaccinated vs. unvaccinated study? Or apart from government funding, how about petitioning autism charities like Generation Rescue, AOA, or some of the large ones to fund such a study. Then the study could be farther removed from the allegations of conflict of interest or drug company influence.
Even if we forget about the funding, how many of the doctors or scientists who have such strong concerns, like Blaxill above have taken the time to seriously plan the logistics of such a study to determine what is required?
The reality is that even if such a study was performed, the anti-vax community would not be satisfied with any result except one that shows that vaccines cause autism. It is the only possible outcome that you are interested in. That is why every study that adds to the body of evidence against such a causal connection is ignored or simply dismissed as being rife with conflicts of interest. There isn't an actual interest in proving anything other than that vaccines cause autism.

“I was once one of those in the medical/scientific community that could not let go of my personal bias. Turning one's belief system around does not happen overnight if at all. I did finally get it right but only after 30 plus reactions in my family and after 38 years of living. Once it happens to you and your eyes open there is no denying the truth. John, if you would ever like out story, I would love to tell it. It runs the gambit from military vaccines that left my dad with myopericarditis and later death to strokes in several family members, sometimes within hours of shots. All four of my children reacted immediately. I stroked within 30 minutes of tetanus booster. My husband reacted to Hep B (as did my children). We had the kind of reactions that at one time would have been considered cause for medical exemptions and yet none were given.”

“The information of thimerasol was found using the Freedom of Information Act and with time it became acceptable/allowed to discuss and report on it in the media. For decades that was not so. An internal medicine text from 1946 has an entire chapter on mercury poisoning something that simply is not addressed in current medical texts these days. It is an interesting read. In those days it was used as a means of suicide and children were not generally exposed to mercury as they are today.
That being said I am finding that the so-called "anti-vax" side does not harp on about thimerasol the way the pro-vaccine side does these days. It seems to be brought up as a means to try to discredit the parents...as a "look see we still have autism and they were wrong". Many of us saw that coming but that is no reason to not alert parents to the dangers of mercury. We are concerned about the many toxins, animal and human blood products, viral contaminants in vaccines, not just the mercury. And as far as mercury in vaccines these days is concerned... I know that doctors have old stockpiles of vaccines full of mercury and they are still using them. The vials last for years and they were not told to pull them. PArents continue to request to see the vials and they continue to find mercury in the vaccines given to their children.”

“lettersinthesan writes: "And as far as mercury in vaccines these days is concerned... I know that doctors have old stockpiles of vaccines full of mercury and they are still using them. The vials last for years and they were not told to pull them."
A normal dose of vaccine has a volume of 0.5ml. In a 10 dose vial, 25 millionth of a gram of ethylmercury is added per dose in the form of thimerosal (which breaks down in the body into ethylmercury. Infants 6 months to 3 years get flu vaccine in half doses.
The last lots of thimerosal containing vaccines distributed in the US, expired by the end of 2002 (Canada stop using them earlier). There are two exceptions. One, Tripedia a DTaP vaccine has trace amounts (at least 75 times less than as a preservative) in single doses. Two other DTaP vaccines costing about the same contain zero thimerosal. As well, the trend is to combine DTaP into DTaP-IPV or DTaP-Hib etc (none of which contain thimerosal).
Thimerosal is also used in 10 dose vials of flu vaccine. They were not routinely recommended for use in infants 6 months and older in the US until 2006.

Very interesting indeed since that sort of encephalopathy in mumps is rare. I see it generally following vaccines and personally know quite a few children who have either been left unable to walk or who have died following the tragic events that ensued post vaccination. Until the doctors, scientists and any one else who insist all be vaccinated stop disregarding the lives of so many, parents will continue to fight for the truth. You may be harmed from disease and you may be harmed from the vaccines. Those selling you the vaccines lie about their safety to sell you the products. But then, we don't know if Ms Erlinsdottir's cousin had mumps when what is usually confused with mumps is infection of the lymph nodes in that area, usually with Staph or Strep germs, which responds to antibiotics, or bacterial parotitis, infection of the salivary gland with a bacterium, usually Staphylococcus aureus.
