Quienes creen así son iguales a los hombres de Neanderthal que en este momento están descargando su venganza por una película que no existe. And, as Obama said, IF the government can help YOU make the transition, YOU will be here for another 100 years. A condition, first of all (IF). No promise, just a hypothesis. And the assumption that if circumstances were favorable, GM itself would do the hard work and enjoy the success. Things don't "flow" from the government. A useful, supportive government buoys them up. So stop spinning and smell the coffee.”

Morgan Freeman On Marijuana: Criminalization Of Weed Is 'Stupidest Law Possible'

“I agree, missouriwatcher. Of course, since we all die... and nobody gets to take anything with them, let alone "their" land... Well, really, right? My point was more about the hubris and unmitigated gall of humans to proscribe something that the Almighty Sovereign God they claim to worship created.”

“Agreed.  Some are, no doubt, sincere; but the politicians that monetarily benefit from the laws as written, tend to just play the emotion card with those that never question.  My opinion is that 99%+ of politicians do not belief in God or a hereafter; if they did, they would change their ways.”

“Life and death are in the hands of God, you know. But the Bible worshippers (Bibleolaters?) only pay attention to the "life" part. "Vengeance is Mine saith the Lord". (Deut. 32:35, Romans 12:19). That means no capital punishment and no wars of revenge like Iraq and Afghanistan. Besides, according to Mourdock's logic, God must have intended 9/11, so how dare we try to avenge it? Can Christianity Be Saved? A Response to Ross Douthat

Can Christianity Be Saved? A Response to Ross Douthat

Commented Jul 16, 2012 at 11:37:38 in Religion

“Yes... comb the Bible... Jesus never said ANYTHING about sex. It just wasn't an important issue for him. But, beyond the fact that the Bible isn't even "a" book, but a collection of books written by many different authors across a span of over 1,000 years, beyond the fact that it wasn't written in English so, if you can't read Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, you're at the mercy of the translator's agenda (they all have them), and beyond the fact that the Bible contains factual and historical errors and in many places contradicts itself... The real reason Christianity is dying is not because of its unfaithfulness to its own doctrine (There isn't even any such thing as "Christianity", only Christianities, no single doctrine, but many). It is because that doctrine is faulty. Christianity took a wrong and fatal turn in 325 when, under the misguided leadership of the pseudo-Christian Constantine, it decided the Gospels were literal, historical records. Before that, Christians accepted that, like all the other such stories in the ancient world, the Jesus story was a beautiful... myth, a a story that isn't literally true but that expresses a set of eternal values. Christianity as myth is bold, strong, life-giving. Christianity as literalness (i.e., fundamentalism) is not only weak and doomed, but just plain silly. For a philosophy or a theology to survive and continue being meaningful, it has to be a worthy one in the first place.”

The whole incident smacks of NPR's grossly overreacting in a way that makes it look like they are completely unable to understand the dynamic. It Gets Better, But No Thanks To You, President Obama

“You missed my entire point, CSN, which was not about anything Obama has or hasn't done, but about merlinspinoza's callous claim that "the gay issue is trivia". First of all, the matter of equal civil rights for gay people only seems like an "issue" to the lucky individuals who already have theirs. To the disenfranchised, it's not an "issue"––it's their life. And second, gay persons are a presence in every other subset of human beings that can be imagined––so it is a false argument to compare or advance the interests of one of those over gay people. I mean, why should we waste our time worrying about the rights of chickens? Who's going to fight for poultry? There's a lot more of them!”

“The gay "issue"? Trivia? Not to the 660,000,000 million people for whom it frequently means a lifetime of abuse and self-loathing that wastes their potential and precludes any shred of a chance at the happiness others have handed to them (not through any particular merit, but through the pure and twisted accident of their belonging to a majority) unless they have the superhuman strength needed to fight for and maintain their self respect in the face of a force directed at robbing and destroying it. Oh, and BTW, at least 10% of your environmentalists, forclosed homeowners, Afghans, soldiers, and victims of military killing ARE gay. Perhaps you forgot that.”

Clever Screen Name on Oct 25, 2010 at 17:44:56

“Abuse? Let's see, what can the government do about that... how about the Mathew Shepard bill, which makes gay-bashing a hate-crime. Who signed that? Oh yeah, Obama, your enemy. Self-loathing? Can't help you there, other than to send a message of inclusiveness which he did with the speech above and the appointment of David Huebner, who is openly gay. Never been done before. How about HIV/AIDS money? Did that, too -- Ryan White bill. Other things that were within his power to do that you can look up and not give him any credit for. But DADT, now an almost completely symbolic issue that affects, unlike the above, very few people, is the one that sticks in your craw and he should be punished for not getting to it soon enough or in the way you like. I mean, c'mon.”

Same-Sex Marriage and the Meaning of Words

Commented Nov 7, 2009 at 06:39:08 in Politics

“Thank you Kevins. Although I am quite correct about the original Latin meaning of "coitus", I will grant you, ddeagler, that in English the word has come to mean "sexual intercourse". The Oxford American Dictionary defines "intercourse" as "dealings between individuals". So the term "sexual intercourse" retains the original meaning of the Latin "coitus" and does not refer to (a) any specific pair of individuals or (b) any specific sexual act. All sex between humans is sexual intercourse. Certainly, it is your own personal fantasy that "sexual intercourse" refers only to (a) heterosexual couplings and (b) penile/vaginal penetration. If one of a pair of heterosexual married partners suffers from a sexual dysfunction, should they be allowed to stay married, even though as a couple they are incapable of your version of proper marital sexual activity? Or should they be required to be single as you would demand of gay couples?”

Same-Sex Marriage and the Meaning of Words

Commented Nov 6, 2009 at 15:13:26 in Politics

“Bill, marriage is not a process, first of all. It's an institution. And if by God's "word", you are referring to the Bible, than clearly you have not read it. In the Bible, marriage was not permitted to slaves (of any color) nor was it ever permitted to females to choose their own spouse. The model of relationships in the Bible is polygamy (one man with several wives), concubinage (one man having one or more mistress), and occasionally even rape, sanctioned by the Hebrew patriarchy with a wink and a nod from God. The reason the word "marriage" is so contentious right now is that even the Founding Fathers, apparently, did not understand how allowing religious ministers to perform civil unions on behalf of the state would come so dangerously close to contravening their own principle that church and state should be separated. You're right, that the law could be changed without doing violence to whatever any religious person might believe to be the dictates of their god. But what has to happen first is, the US has to bring itself in line with every other civilized nation on the planet and require ALL couples, gay or straight, to have a civil union at the town hall in order to be considered legally joined. Anyone who wants to then go off and have their faith community bless and celebrate their marriage can do so. But a church or synagogue ceremony alone should not be counted as a valid marriage.”

Same-Sex Marriage and the Meaning of Words

Commented Nov 6, 2009 at 14:58:16 in Politics

“The word "coitus" is simply the Latin for "coming together", literally. It does not describe any particular act and is nothing more than a euphemism for sexual activity irrespective of what parts might be put where. Nor does the word have the faintest connection with the state of marriage. Ignorance of history, of culture, and of language is so widespread among the loudest voices in this (and many another) public debate. Honestly, the personal fantasies people cite in support of their unadulterated bigotry! Anything, but open their hearts. [And "unadulterated" doesn't mean faithful to your spouse.]”

ddeagler on Nov 6, 2009 at 16:09:25

“This is simply not true. Coitus means sexual intercourse. Gay sex is not sexual intercourse. This is not a personal fantasy nor is it bigotry. Apparantly since your argument is not argument but opinion you resort to name calling.”
