“True, but insurance regulations don't make you buy extra insurance in addition to your regular flood insurance plan for when your neighbor sticks a hose in your basement window at night and turns it on.”

“Compared to those 83 percent of Republicans, lesser majorities of 71 percent of Democrats and 65 percent of independents said they preferred direct election of senators. Democrats and independents were somewhat more likely than Republicans to say they weren't sure, not to say they preferred election by state legislatures.”

“I never said about all topics. I'm referring to the article. Did you read the article? I think I've found the issue here. In the article is shows that ABOUT THIS EXACT AMENDMENT republicans are solidly against it. I pointed that out and you stated "Republicans often disagree with each other. We think for ourselves, unlike Democrats" I am saying ABOUT THIS THING WE BOTH (hopefully) READ- that is not what the numbers are showing. The numbers are showing Republican's are actually MORE solidly against it then either dems or independents (though everyone pretty much hates it)”

ArlingtonVA on Dec 4, 2013 at 12:13:47

“Yes, on this particular issue. I was referrring to independent thought in general, and how Democrats tend to walk in lockstep, confused and celebratory when the GOP has internal disagreements as if it's a bad thing.”

“and now they are just breezing in and out? They STILL are more solid, sober and stable (other then Ted Cruz) The house of representatives however is a nuthouse. So why have the state legislatures (also somewhat nutty) pick instead of the people? The people have proven to elect fairly stable people statewide. The districts? That's when the loons come in.”

They designed it that way to make the Senate more solid, sober, and stable, protecting it from the passing whims of the popular electorate. It's the same reasoning behind the Senate's 6-year terms versus the House's 2-year terms.”

“The point was does Black Thursday/Friday matter? It may be the difference between profitability and bankruptcy for the stores. It also may be the difference of what customers will buy? If sales are down, but profits are up the companies make out OK. Many of the discounted items still make a profit.”

“Interestingly my mother and sister do Black Friday and my husband and I did mostly local little stores yesterday. We looked online before, brainstormed- went to 10 stores and knocked out almost all our shopping in 4-5 hours. My mom and sister aren't nearly done. When you look everywhere for the perfect stuff in a big box store you drive yourself crazy and go in circles. Unique stores that have something I really think is special- it's much easier. We actually spent more too, since I kept finding awesome ideas for everyone. I think the culture of Black Friday is backfiring. It is exposing just how marked up and pedestrian all that crap was to start with.”

I certainly won't vote for any republicans that I've seen in quite some time. My wife's parents are extremely wealthy and have a son and two daughters. I don't think they have ever voted for a republican.”
