The Complexities of Letting Go

Commented Jan 31, 2011 at 01:42:16 in Divorce

“Okay, maybe that didn't sound right, what I mean is, letting go? I am not sure how I can make it through the next 24 hours. Actually getting to the point of letting go, or some type of release seems totally hopeless.”

“Be good to yourself. You deserve this. You need to find a trained therapist to talk with. this will really help! If you are willing to take it seriously!”

hp blogger SaraKay Smullens on Jan 31, 2011 at 12:35:47

“You are saying that you feel like a ton of bricks has landed on you, and this is understandable. The way you are able to express yourself shows that you can do so well with professional help. Please talk to someone you trust -- your doctor, your religious leader, a friend -- and find someone to talk with in order to sort things out. This can lead to a different perspective and new found strength. I wish you so well!”

The Complexities of Letting Go

Commented Jan 31, 2011 at 01:37:44 in Divorce

“Watching my marriage fall apart at the seams, is showing me that I am BOTH of my parents....Saddening that it took fourteen years for me to see the light. How do you ever recover from that? That's my fear, being alone for the rest of my life. This is so not how I planned it, heck two weeks ago we were talking about me retiring a few years early and traveling....(another 13 years from now of course)”

The Complexities of Letting Go

Commented Jan 31, 2011 at 01:31:35 in Divorce

“First of all, fantastic article! I am a 37 year old man, married....Well day to day it seems, with two children, a nine year old with autism, and a "typical" 11 year old boy. My wife has brought to my attention that we have "hit a wall" and really isn't speaking with me, we are living in the same house right now, but separate.

Now I know, I have made mistakes, I never have been unfaithful, I never have lied, but I have been immature, and insecure, and I know I have caused her pain. But I also know she has shut me out little by little over the past few years, not just me, a lot of those around her. And the bottom line is this, if she isn't happy, I will go, all I want is her happiness. But right now the thought of not being there is like someone is removing a limb...

Is that normal?”

hp blogger Martha L. Wellington on Feb 1, 2011 at 12:40:11

“I am no longer sure what "Normal" is, but your reactions make such sense. Get the help you need to be all you are capable of being!”

Nomi Bachar on Feb 1, 2011 at 10:58:10

“Sir, why would you let go of the woman you love?

It seems like you have neglected "emotional communication" with your wife for a long time. And I realize that it is not easy to keep it up with the pressures of raising children and maintaining a household.

But love is maintained ONLY by heartfelt communication between two people. That kind of communication nourishes intimacy. Along side bring home the bacon and making sure the kids are alright, this is be a top priority.

The heart of a marriage is vacant without an honest and authentic emotional exchange. I suggest that you fight for your marriage by doing the following:

1) Engage your wife in a dialogue. Share with her how you feel and admit to her what you did and did not do. Acknowledge her pain and your roll in that pain.

2) Create a space for her to express her feelings towards you.

3) Be the Facilitator and take your wife and yourself to a counselor. You both need to learn emotional communications skills.

4) Make a commitment to repairing this marriage.

Just starting the process is hard, but you will regret not fighting for your family. I see this often in my practice. It is never too late…..

“Please find a really good family therapist or clinical social worker to talk with as soon as possible. You and your wife have gone through so much together, and you both must be just exhausted. If your wife will not go with you, begin this process alone. It can really, truly benefit you! I wish you so very well!!”

Why Forgiveness is Overrated

Why Forgiveness is Overrated

Commented Jan 31, 2011 at 01:24:33 in Divorce

“I think the whole idea of forgiveness is forgotten sometimes. I DO think you can "let go" of the pain, and perhaps muster enough goodwill at some point in the future to let by-gones be by-gones. Forgiveness doesn't let anyone off the hook. To me it's simply the idea that people are who and what they are, and me punishing myself trying to figure out what I did wrong, isn't going to change that I was hurt.”

“Well documented by MSNBC......There's a difference between a political party having some wingnuts, and an entire movement being accused of the KKK. If you step back in time a little, which I know would be painful, you will read about some of the most powerful Democrats in the country being flat out opposed to the civil rights movement. How about LBJ, Al Gores father was flat out opposed. Even JFK was "conflicted" by his own admission. Maybe that's why you run out so feverishly to paint someone else that way. Guilt?”

“Maybe people don't admit it because it propoganda garbage? My God, the man IS half caucasian. Oh and I am sure he didn't get any racial leanings in that church he spent 20 years in. Just admit that Liberals detest anyone who doesn't beat the tune they are playing at the time. Now that you have the White House and Senate, you're not happy unless EVERYONE wants to agree and play nice.”

WolfieCA on Jan 31, 2011 at 00:54:22

“Did you actually have a point to make? Because if you did you failed.

The teabaggers were all hot to prove themselves to be bigots until their handlers told them to put the signs away. And Barack Obama was black enough for Limbaugh to mock on racist grounds when it was convenient for him. Or did you forget that part?

Just admit that you really don't have the foggiest notion about what you are speaking and that most of the "points" you think you raise are garbage talking points that have already been refuted.

Personally, I couldn't care less if people "play nice" or not. We already went through the right-wing version of "playing nice" which was intimidation, threats, and attacks on our patriotism if we so much as questioned what the Republicans did. Well guess what chucky, playing nice is, as it's name implies, a nicety. In my opinion, the right has pretty much forfeited any right they ever had to demand that anyone "play nice."

Expect that when you lie to claim that overt racism is not racism, you will be called out on it. Live with it, get used to it, get over it. Just be glad that, unlike your talking heads, I don't throw the word "Traitor" around willy-nilly.”

“She does present quite the bee in the liberal bonnet. I think most people's negatively visceral reaction to her stems from our desire for her to simply be cognizant of how inflammatory her rhetoric can seem, especially to crowds of people looking for any reason to remain fearful and paranoid. Her "woman of the people" act becomes less and less plausible with each million she makes, further removing her from the very people who practically deify her. The level of frustration she inspires from the left only increases the longer she bends the ear of the public and garners so much unwarranted media attention. I promise myself often that I am going to declare a moratorium on speaking about her. Just as I settle comfortably into this decision, she has to pop up with yet another provocative and patently false assertion that just cannot go unchallenged. Maybe some day they'll make a therapy group for people like me.”
