“Sad commentary on the Methodists. But there are plenty of other denominations that would welcome him as pastor.
I am curious how the consciences of those running this "trial" will effect the outcome. Also, I wonder how those church members who kicked ministers out for performing interracial marriages feel now....”

“It will be a kangaroo court show trial. We already know the outcome.”

“If this trial turns out like the others have (there have been a few), he'll be acquitted. For exactly the reasons of conscience that you mention.
This is an active area of debate within the United Methodist Church, and the question is so close that, as a gay Methodist, I don't feel like I can just take my ball and go home. I think the right side is close to prevailing.”
“Two guys standing in the hallway pressing "record" on a smartphone is hardly a watergate moment. More akin to what the right's heartthrob James Pimps-and-Hos (can't remember his last name). The difference being James what'shisface doctored and manipulated his tapes.
Shame on the left for distancing themselves from Progress Kentucky. Keep up the good work, guys.”
“Man, so many more reported cases of middle aged women -- I really found it hard to believe this was happening, yet week after week there is a new case.
my sense is it's always been happening, but now there's more understanding about how sexual exploitation of minors is a problem no matter if the adult is male or female.
but what confuses me is why so many teachers keep doing this, despite the stories day after day in the papers. Are they really convinced teenagers will not tell? Sad that there are so many who are so eager to get off on the power and control and attention that sexual exploitation brings, rather than owning their own problems and getting help.
I am glad they are taking abuse seriously, regardless of whether the teacher is male or female, or hot or not.”
“If this happened in the US, I would not be surprised. But I always thought Canada was less of a raging theocracy. Talk about government mandated Christianity! Hundreds of chaplains, yet not one non-Christian is qualified for the position?
Personally, I'd trust a buddhist far more than a Christian to coordinate pastoral care for the masses of men and women behind bars...”

“Isn't this an old story? The guy got convicted to 25 years to life. I'm confused.”
kahunacook on Aug 2, 2012 at 15:46:31
“Yes, he was already convicted of child pornography and is serving his 25 year sentence. These are new and additional charges regarding sexual assault on minors that have come to light. This is one disgusting individual. It's apparent he wants to victimize his victims all over again with the added benefit of enjoying his sick videos over and over again.”

“I'm sorry, if you find your job doesn't pay enough for you to live...than you go back to school after a few years, and either try a different career or you get more skills. Whose fault is it that she didn't make enough money? Go to night school.
Guess what? There are other people making less than $38k who don't go robbing banks. Get a part time job.”
Dr JohnS on Aug 1, 2012 at 15:18:21
“Is that justification for robbery? She was young so she could have looked for a job else where or gone back to school.”
DanORants on Aug 1, 2012 at 14:58:09
“Salary information is readily available for professions before getting into one. What you earn is justification for either cutting back your expenses or getting a second job... it is NOT justification to rob a bank.”
“Ok Mr. sanity, give us a picture of clarity here. Some content to go with you insult. I would appreciate an intelligent response, if that is possible... First of all Do you know who James Holme's Father is and what he does for a living??? You give me a sane and informed answer and i will wear your tinfoil hat.”
“I agree with your basic assumption here. But I would also caution that the south IS the face of the prison privatization movement, with Louisiana and Florida being prime examples. It IS happening all over; but southeastern GOP legislatures have embraced privatization more comprehensively, with devastating effects.”
There was no need to fabricate what was already a compelling story and disturbing reality. That he chose to, and defended his choices until he realized how untenable his defense was makes me think this play is still about saving his butt and assuaging his massive ego.

“Loss of career and reputation ....for 65 dollars. "Sasha" should just have placed an ad looking for a regular ole good time in her hotel room and had sex for free like the rest of us. Then she would not be facing any charges at all.
And believe me, being 65 and looking like that, getting some for free would be a good deal!!”

“Why don't Republicans offer up a ban interracial marriage and evolution, since that would evidently satisfy their base. (Snarky comment based on Pew exit poll results in this week's primaries.)
At what point have will the Republicans realize that the base is unsatisfiable and raging, crazy and fickle, an assortment of racists, and women haters, and immigrant haters, white supremacists, conspiracy theorists, culture warriors (the categories could go on and on), and perhaps realize this base does not deserve their every whim satisfied, while we through the majority under the bus.”
“Would you say this if he got pulled over for speeding today? Probably not. It's happened twice and so there's something to be said.
Well .. he has had multiple domestic violence/domestic assault complaints, which at this point have outnumbered his speeding tickets.”

“A complaint is not a conviction. I say again...I am not defending him. I am asking those who consider themselves to be judge and jury back off and hear both sides. Our president has had a couple of knee jerk reactions like this, then he was proven to be wrong. Remember the Beer Summit? He learned and so should these posters.”
“White people's fear of black men is the primary catalyst for this event, from the woman who overreacted to the officer who shot an unarmed man 10 times. If the woman said he made no threats then why did the police send the officer to respond to breaking and entering?
There is no way to assess the police officer's "reasonable fear" of being attacked when the cop is white and the suspect black. White people's racial fear is, at its core, irrational and is no excuse for murder.”
case96000 on Sep 16, 2013 at 19:23:27
“I'm sorry, this is a terrible thing but would a typical black woman open the door for a white man banging on the door in the middle of the night, probably not. The cop here was the problem, and I'm not so sure it was a racial act. There have been a rash of shootings across the country and all of the people shot were not black. This is a mentality of shoot first then ask questions, and it's happening way to much these days. With SWAT teams sitting ready, training to kill, officers doing the same there's just to much policing going on. Most of the time the cops say the dead guy did something threatening and the dead guy isn't saying anything. The Police should be held more responsible when the pull their gun.”
390ish on Sep 16, 2013 at 19:19:24
“So, should all cops be black? You think that would make a difference? Ask a black guy if he feels more safe around a black cop or a white cop. Chances are, he will feel the same about either one.”

“I'm not saying what the Po-Po did wasn't wrong but walk through a ghetto at night & let's see if your fear of being attacked is irrational.”

“The only way to access one officer's "reasonable" fear is a close examination of the actions of the other officers on scene.”

“Fear of the black man? Now I've heard it all. Amazing the race merchants and the victim class comes out of the woodwork for stories like this, yet amazingly stay absent from a story about a black man who killed thirteen people. Sad and pathetic”
“His aunt was interviewed right away on TV and she said she picked him up in her car, he was ducking down, acting suspicious. She identified herself as his aunt. I admit I have not been following coverage, other than I keep reading his family was saying it was not possible and he was misidentified. But I never hear more mention of the interview an actual family member gave implicating him, who had direct contact with him, saw a gun in his pocket, and disproves the alibi.”

“It was actually the aunt of the younger child, 14, that made that account of picking them up. It was her who went to the police with the information to even deem Mr. Elkins as a suspect. Then he was picked out of a line of 24 by the baby's mother... And then a bunch of craziness happened, including the own sister of the baby saying she didn't believe her moms story and that she's schizo or something. I don't know what/who to believe.”

“from what I read today, it was the aunt of the other boy who gave them a ride. She said the older boy was crouching down in the car and then soon after he got out of the car. She is being threatened now by some of the people in her community for talking to the police.”
