Internet-Based Stress Management Programs Can Lower Employee Stress, Study Finds

Commented May 6, 2013 at 19:15:31 in Healthy Living

“This article confirms what my patients tell me. There is so much written about stress that it confuses and confounds even the most involved reader. A few minutes with your doctor is hardly enough time to be able to untangle all these conflicting reports. That's why my patients appreciate supplementing their visit with blogs from their own doctor, on www.stressipedia.com.”

“Good article. Our bodies were programmed to "hunt and gather", not to "hunt and peck". Modern office work involves little movement of the big muscles, and lots of tension in the small muscles. This combined with an indrawn posture contrives to create all kinds of back pains, tension headaches, and a host of stress related issues. Probiotic Remedies: 6 Ways Live Active Bacteria Can Boost Your Health

“Don't forget to take probiotics when you are on antibiotics, but never at the same moment. Wait at least three hours after your antibiotics before taking a probiotic, to avoid them cancelling each other out! Learn more at http://www.stressipedia.net/post/2011/07/13/Probiotics-new-use-for-an-old-bacteria.aspx

“Suppose someone is on an antibiotic regimen of three time a day. Each dosage of antibiotics will kill the gut flora, and the flora will not replace themselves in these "in-between" probiotic supplements. Someone on a ten-day antibiotic treatment will benefit tremendously from taking probiotics as soon as the ten-day period ends, but the continuous taking of probiotics and killing the bacteria with antibiotics immediately afterward will result in pretty much the same situation as if they didn't take the probiotics during the antibiotic regimen.

Probiotics are absolutely useful and beneficial, as long as you are not saturating your body with antibiotic chemicals. Antibiotics are indicated for many conditions, and I'm always surprised that people think they can somehow "will" the bacteria to survive the antibiotics. The bacteria will die as soon as the antibiotics are in the gut.”

“Probiotics rock. However, beware the ones that claim to stay "fresh" forever at room temperature. The actual acidophyllus bacteria will not survive properly unless refrigerated (hence we keep yogurt and dairy products in the fridge). Thanks.”

“People with straight hair spend their time trying to curl it; those with natural curls are ironing theirs staight. The contact industry sells blue lenses to brown-eyed people, and brown ones to the naturally blue-eyed ones. There is an industry of skin-whiteners for dark skins, while the suntan industry is based on the white skinned people trying to be black. Wouldn't it be a lot easier to celebrate our natural attributes?? “Not to worry doc, human nature is here to stay. Wanting something we do not have has been around for a long time. Look at the bright side, it's good for the economy.”

“I don't think white skinned people are trying to be black, but I get what you are saying. The only time we seem celebrate our differences is when we want to posess the traits that we see in others, otherwise we find it necessary to tear each other down, because of our differences! We are a pretty messed bunch here on earth aren't we?”

“Diabetes is definitely on the rise, riding a couple of years behind the same growth curve of obesity. Considering that type 2 diabetes is directly related to bad diet and insufficient exercise, this is a completely unneccessary epidemic. Not only is diabetes causing medical health care costs to rise off the charts, it also leads to a host of illnesses, from depression to heart disease and blindness. “Good post, Mark. But rather than only thinking of stress strategies for bad times, or the attack of the "tiger" that you mention, I like to remind my patients to be vigilant in good times as well. Dr. Hans Selye originally defined stress as the adaptation of our mind and body to ANY change, whether good or bad news. So we are still under stress if we have moved to a bigger city, delivered twins, or graduated from college and started a new job. The strategies mentioned need to be applied even if things are going well for you, as your body can feel stresses 24/7. The Rise of Ambien: Why More Americans Are Taking the Sleeping Pill and Why the Numbers Matter

Commented May 8, 2013 at 13:40:07 in Healthy Living

“As a practicing MD, I do get a lot of requests for sleeping pills from patients. While there are short term reasons why these may have merit, for the most part they offer more risk than reward. Insomnia is not a disease, and it won't kill you. The pills, on the other hand, may indeed harm you. So if you would like to get the big picture here, review the story of Thomas Edison: The Father of Insomnia, at http://www.stressipedia.net/post/2010/11/16/Insomnia-Is-It-Worth-Losing-Sleep-Over.aspx

Of course the tiger you refer to brings on a stress response, but so does good news, like delivering triplets, moving to a new city, graduating, taking on a new career etc. People should have strategies for all times, and not just when things are going poorly.
