Taking Women's Rights Seriously

“Gordon Brown, you are truly a hypocrite, as we voters in the UK know very well. Shameful behaviour, you posting about women's equality. Laughable.”

Taking Women's Rights Seriously

Commented Aug 25, 2009 at 17:01:07 in Politics

“Gordon Brown, you are a hypocrite, but then you know that, as do the voters in the UK. This may play well across the pond, but we here in the UK know better about your commitment to women's rights and equality. Practice what you preach and perhaps some day you might be taken seriously on the issue of women's equality. Pandering to the US voter will do you no good at home, quite the opposite. Shameful.”

“I certainly agree with you that every person should remain innocent in the eyes of the law until proven guilty, but you are off the mark with both of your other comments, about crossing state lines and about use of the informant information to obtain a search or arrest warrant. As to the latter, that is not what the article states was done with the informant information. Rather, it seems the informant information led the police to investigate Lombard through a sting operation, and the affidavit of the detective who Lombard had allegedly tried to induce to, yes, cross state lines then used as a basis for the arrest warrant. Even if D.C. itself is not a state, Lombard attempted to induce the detective to leave a state, thus crossing a state line, that is enough, regardless of the status of D.C. It does not sound "fishy" to me, and I am so glad for this little boy that, if these allegations turn out to be true, he has finally been saved from this sick monster. Who, like most pedophiles, knows no remorse for their horrific life ruining actions.”

“well, this is a nice little story, but as a lesbian raised a catholic, i can tell you that all was not a love fest with this guy, he is responsible for much violence against homosexuals around the world, as is the present pope, so, my version differs profoundly from yours, go figure, it is wrong to say in the extreme that the only distinctions he made were between love and hate, simply not true, and demonstrably so, not quite 'all of God's children' were included in his 'teachings', for example promoting the following 'love' towards GLBT people; describing homosexual orientation as 'objectively disordered' and loving intimate acts as 'intrinsically evil' and declaring that same sex marriage is 'a deplorable distortion' and adoption by gay or lesbian parents 'a grave danger.'

Don't know about you 'smoovejef', but I don't count these as comments promoting love towards all God's children, on the contrary, I count them as inciting hatred and violence, which they did, and still do, so, I find your comments not all that thoughtful, actually, on the whole

I think the catholic church is a deplorable institution, with some good people members of it, and some really evil ones too, i.e., those who are actually full of love towards all, and those who are full of hate and hypocrisy”

“he clearly said he would go if they had not won and were invited - "This is how I feel -- if you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don't win the Super Bowl. " - so it does seem there is an issue at work other than his not wanting to travel, whatever could that be . . . . hmmmmm . . .”

“i think she is trying to put her fame and high profile to good use . . . i have also heard from a very reliable source that she is very genuine in her commitment to wanting to help, that when she goes out in the field, i.e., e.g., to Africa on trips to represent the UN, that she is NOT at all a prima donna, she does not insist on some big entourage, she does her own hair, she does not insist on all sorts of amenities special treatment, etc., in short, that it is NOT all about her when she does these things, that it is NOT about publicity for herself, it is about getting publicity for the issues. I work at one of the international criminal tribunals in the hague, and I think it is a good thing that she came here to draw attention to the issue of the use of child soldiers. I am not a big fan of the prosecutor of the court, I think he is much more of a publicity hound than Ms. Jolie is any day of the week, and too driven by his own ego rather than the work fo the court. But I digress . . . I think Ms. Jolie is genuinely one of the good ones.”

WE HAVE A RIGHT TO TRANSPARENCY IN DEMOCRACY MR PRESIDENT, we have a right to see those photos . . . . and reviving the military "trials" . . .”

“Have I understood you correctly eyedoc007? Are you really saying that gays and lesbians have the same rights as every other American? If so, I am afraid that you are so out of touch with reality that you should be a bit worried: a few examples, if a gay person's partner is a non-us citizen, can the gay person marry the non-us citizen and have their spouse come live with them in the us? . . . uh, nooooooo; is the partner of a federal employee who is gay entitled to health benefits through their partner? . . . . uh, nooooo; In how many states can a person be discriminated against in housing, employment, benefits, adoption rights, inheritance rights, etc. etc. etc. because they are gay? . . . uh, many; how do hospitals treat same sex couples? . . . uh, very often, very badly. You are making statements on issues that you clearly have NO idea about; a bad habit, and one that makes a person a real bore. You are entitled to your opinion, but why don't you do us all, and yourself, a favour, and at least make it a minimally educated one: http://www.glad.org/ http://www.aclu.org/lgbt/index.html http://www.hrw.org/en/category/topic/lgbt-rights http://www.thetaskforce.org/ http://www.amnestyusa.org/lgbt-human-rights/page.do?id=1011002 http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/12/opinion/12boylan.html?_r=1&em http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/12/how-hospitals-treat-same-sex-couples/

“dear socialmisfit, speaking as a recovering alcoholic myself, i found Wanda Sykes jokes HILARIOUS. Who are you to speak for all of "those people", i.e., addicts? I will speak for myself, thanks just the same. Just because one went through an active addiction (which WAS hell!) does not mean one loses one's sense of humour, including about one's own self. In fact, the healthier a person is, the more they will be able to laugh at their own faults. I am sorry if Mr. Limbaugh does not (or at least APPEARS not to) happen to fall into this category - i.e., a healthy person with a healthy sense of humour, including about himself - but that is not my problem, nor is it a comedian's, such as Wanda Sykes. GO WANDA!!!!”
