Eating Healthy vs. Unhealthy Will Cost You $550 More Per Year, Study Reveals

“this is why studies can be so misleading!! the so call "extra" cost of eating healthy does NOT take into consideration the collateral damage of eating unhealthily. this is a BS study and a waste of money to the persons who conducted it.

If cheap, processed, chemical laden foods are avoided, chances are you are going to not only have less chance of chronic illness, but the QUALITY of your life will be better.

furthermore, if subsidies for this cheap food were no longer available, then the "cheap" food would go up and level the playing field. even better, let's start gov't subsidies for organic foods and make the healthier choices be the "cheap" stuff...THEN the overall health of our society would improve vastly.”

“i use the analogy of movies and restaurants. ONE bad movie or meal out and it would only keep me from watching that movie again or going to that restaurant. I HATED my first yoga classes..so i went to different places with different styles and teachers...and i've been practicing now for 10 yrs nearly daily AND I became a teacher 8 yrs ago.

DVDs are great AFTER you have safe instruction and guidance from a live class environment...otherwise , it can be potentially dangerous as well as ineffective...and boring.”

“I'd add more hip openers if I was teaching a yoga class to help release anger...I agree with empowering yourself and 3rd chakra work can do that..still, I'd do a squatting version of woodchopper (which I do every morning 108 times..I call them Kali chops) and add some nice warrior lunges and slow flows. power yoga is good too for some works for me), though that may make some people even more angry...especially those who are not power yoga fans to begin with.”

“i did oil pulling for a long time in hopes to fight bacteria and inflammation in my gums and to save my teeth. to no avail..despite never having a cavity and a very healthy diet (devoid of gluten, sugar, dairy, etc...) I still lost my top row of teeth to periodontal disease AND had a scraping of my gums immediately following oilpulling only to see that it did NOT kill the bacteria. If I'd not seen the microscope slide created of my mouth minutes after the oil i may not have believed it.

That said, I now do coconut oil in the mornings for the healing properties to help after my last gum augmentation surgery, which was a success after a failed one in November, where I did not use the coconut oil. It's not messy, it's easy to not swallow it, and I spit it out in the garbage or outside after 10-15 minutes. easy, peasy, inexpensive.”

“good luck on that. being the open minded critical thinker that I am, I am more than willing to investigate links to validate your claims that the body will not absorb/drink up dangerous chemicals in sunscreens (lotions, and other things..how about soaking in water that has fluoride in it?).

I WANT to be wrong. There is so much endocrine imbalances these days...and I cannot help but believe that a large reason is due to the products that we are not only ingesting by eating and breathing, but also from the products we put on our bodies.”

NevaforLeadership on Mar 7, 2013 at 10:23:18

“Not enough critical thinking, as you obviously didn't know anything about the cell membrane barrier that prevents external solutions entering the human body.

The benefits of floridated water far outweigh the negatives.

I agree that much of what we ingest through our mouths (and maybe through our noses) has the potential to upset hormonal balances. The only way for products to be absorbed into our bodies is through our mouths, noses and through our skins with prescribed drugs.

I work at protecting my health, as well as my computer's health. That is why I never click on posters' links -- learned that the hard way. I believe posters should absorb what they read and then put forth their arguments based on what they have learned. Great way to check comprehension. Once in a while, when I am not sure of my position, I have gone to a poster's recommended site (never clicked on links) only to find that he/she has totally misunderstood the article, lifted out only his/her point of view, or that the source of the article is highly questionable or biased.

In this case I am sure of my facts. The health food and organic cosmetics/skincare industries are loaded with myths, false claims and really dodgy "science," and such claims need to be exposed.”

“thanks for your comment..#1 is def. NOT a good suggestion for most. interestingly from what I have read, skin cancer is LOWEST near the sunniest areas..like near the equator. endocrine system disruptors found in most commercial sunscreens is HORRIBLE for us.

there are no guarantees; however, I never wear sunscreen and get about 20 min a day of sun..it helps my body to produce more vitamin D and LOWERS my chance of cancer in general. I do not lay out in the sun, however, and if I am out for a long time, I apply a sunscreen that's as natural and free of endocrine system disruptors as possible. The environmental working group (www.ewg.org and www.cosmeticdatabase.com) can help to make an informed and safe decision.

We NEED some sun...and we need it directly withOUT sunscreen.”

NevaforLeadership on Mar 5, 2013 at 08:35:10

“Important to apply critical thinking to what we read.

Having lived on the equator, I happen to know that people don't sun bathe and bake their skins into wrinkles and cancer. It's too hot. In addition, people whose ancestors lived in hot/equatorial areas have a whole lot more melanin to protect their skins, although the latter should not be a go-ahead to bake in the sun. Dark people also get skin cancer.

The skin has three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and a lower subcutaneous fatty layer. The epidermis is where a layer of new protective cells grow and shed. The dermis is the skin's machine room, so to speak.

No topical preparation (unless it is classified as a medicine and prescribed by a doctor) can pass through the barrier that lies between the dermis and the epidermis; therefore, any ingredients in over-the-counter sun screen will prevent the sun's rays getting through to the dermis, but they will not disrupt the endocrine system past that barrier.

As long as you are not tanned, then you are OK with your sun exposure. Don't forget that the sun not only causes skin cancer, but it also causes wrinkles -- big time -- a natural prescription to age before one's time! We are lucky to live in the age when we can opt for manufactured Vitamin D to maintain our youthful looks for as long as possible -- for those who are into doing that.”
