Couple Die 15 Hours Apart After 70 Years Of Marriage

Couple Die 15 Hours Apart After 70 Years Of Marriage

Commented Apr 22, 2014 at 04:14:45 in Fifty

“Kurt Vonnegut wrote a book (Cat's Cradle) in which there was a whimsical religion. In this religion there were groups of people whom God had entrusted to accomplish something in the world in concert with each other; members of each group wouldn't necessarily know that they were part of such a group. There was one specific type of such a group, composed of only two people. Each such couple had the characteristic of always dying within 24 hours of each other.”

“Yeah, "firearm safety and the law" is not what I meant. I meant something along the lines of the actual instruction that police take, dealing with the ethics and dynamics of the moment when someone may be threatening something -- to kill you, to kill or hurt others, etc. -- and how to deal with that moment with respect to the deadly force you are carrying. I guess my point is (a) if we teach that to armed police but not "armed everyone," then are we failing society, and if so, (b) how indeed are we going to start teaching that to "armed everyone?" The reason this should be taught to gun owners is because of the special ability of their weapons to kill indiscriminately at a distance. If I'm armed with a knife, for example, I can't point it at a car like this guy did and just instantly kill someone in the car. Special training, above and beyond firearms safety and the law, should therefore be required.”

I agree, and that was indeed covered in my Oregon concealed carry license class. We asked a lot of questions on those subjects in class, and got good answers from the experienced officer who taught us. He was a 20 year veteran who actually had to draw his gun while on duty "more than once"... ;>)”

“United States police officers are trained in the ethics and nuances of when and when not to use deadly force. This is in recognition of the fact that they are carrying deadly weapons as part of their work, and that people may try to kill or injure the officers during their work. (I don't mean something that could potentially kill, like a butcher knife, a table saw, or a tractor-trailer. I mean a tool designed specifically to injure or kill -- a firearm.) On occasion, police officers still end up using deadly force where none was justified.

Now, let's turn our attention to the non-police population who are armed, all however-many-millions of them there are in this country. Now, how in the world are we going to train ALL OF THEM in the ethics and nuances of the use of deadly force?”

“As Eagle said, a class or classes are usually required before you can get a concealed carry permit. Though, most people don't know simple traffic laws so I assume that your average joe is confused about when or when not to shoot.”

“I do not know the answer to your question, but in my state of Oregon a class in firearms safety and the law is required for obtaining a concealed carry license.”

“You bet! As another Pats fan, I also noted that Kraft made a statement that acceptance of Sam in the NFL would be "good for America." Always admired the Patriots' focus on their work, not outside distractions. Some folks seem annoyed because Belichick, Brady, and the whole bunch seem so monotonously focused and give the same boring statements to the media every week. That is a lot of the reason they do so well every season (aside from benefiting from a weak division and from having one of the best QBs and one of the best head coaches in football).”

“Oh, I'm so psyched. I've been waiting for someone to use "sheeple" for almost a year since I last saw it. You know what "sheeple" means? It means that you think you know more about what's going on in our world than most people, who are being led around like sheep. It is a derogatory term that reduces everyone to the status of flock animals. It exploits the fact that we are, after all, a social species who often will do whatever we have to get along with others, including (sometimes) not rocking the boat, and that the problems with society are so complex that many very intelligent people are trying and yet failing to correct them. If you were so competent, you wouldn't be here writing smug but useless lines on this comment list. (Yes, my stuff is useless as well.) Listen, unless you personally are the leader of a credible, revolutionary alternative to this admittedly rotten social and political system we live in, stop calling people (that's what they are really called) silly, insulting names.”

(To the latter group: if scientists working on AIDS offend you -- one of the main gripes righties have with the NIH, by the way -- and science in general is so abhorrent to you, then you'd better stay away from doctors when you get really sick or severely injured, so that those horrible scientific breakthroughs won't come in contact with you!) What's harder to understand is how that anti-science fear-and-belief system can be so strong as to undermine one of the strongest drives in human behavior and one of the ones that helped us get this far as a species -- the drive to protect our helpless, vulnerable children from harm.”

“I can't understand why anyone would be afraid of science or would turn to religion. I've never really liked religion at all, I used to be taken to church every Sunday by my parents even though I didn't want to go and didn't believe in it, and now I luckily don't have to go to church anymore now that I'm an adult. I've always seen science as the way forward, as what brought humanity out of the Dark Ages, as what gave us all of our modern technology and all the conveniences we take for granted, what gave us modern medicine which has saved many of our lives, including my own. Religion has always seemed like some out-of-date Stone Age belief system passed down to us from caveman ancestors who were dumb as rocks. I've never found any merit to religion or any redeeming qualities in it. Religion is basically a means for a small elite of religious leaders to control the rest of the population, a tool of oppression, and a way to keep people from thinking for themselves. It has never benefited humanity, it has always stood in the way of progress.”

This is a nice way of saying that, while a Senator from some states represent a lot more people than a Senator from some other states, each of those Senators has an equally weighted vote in the Senate. This, combined with the filibuster, allows Senators representing very few Americans to override Senators representing a lot more Americans. In other words, the Senate is a load of crap.”

“NFL teams do not resort to using fan accolades or criticism as a major tool to rate players. Skilled players are at a premium, and if a player really has the skills, some team will claim the player even if nobody else will, a la Kurt Warner. There are scouts everywhere. If Tim Tebow really has the skills to be an NFL QB as the position is currently constructed (and by that I mean everything from pure pocket passers to more Kaepernick-like players), then the market will find a place for him regardless of what fans and pundits say. If he does not have the skills, the market will ignore him. It has nothing to do with "Tebow hate."”

The pro game is that advanced compared with the college game...and now the Tebow argument shall continue with two groups talking past each other: those who understand the game (who feel as Schlereth does), and those who love Tebow for moral/religious/heroism reasons having nothing to do with the game of football and feel hurt when anyone criticizes him.”

They don't want to see him given the chance to do what he did in the 2011 season because that would prove all their criticism of him was nothing more then Tebow hate. Anyone who says the Jets gave Tebow an opportunity to prove himself are just blowing smoke. The Jets never gave Tebow any meaningful playing time to show his skills.”
