After 42 Repeal Votes And A Shutdown, GOP Senator Says He Likes A Key Part Of Obamacare

After 42 Repeal Votes And A Shutdown, GOP Senator Says He Likes A Key Part Of Obamacare

“Our three southern energy-rich states (TX, OK, LA) with moderate GOP governors could / should have been using their energy revenues to develop their own innovative state plan for healthcare for all their citizens.

For a minimum they could emulate the Republican Romney plan.

Governors Perry and Jindal and the GOP senators from those states could show their smarts where it counts; instead of merely bad-mouthing the President's healthcare plan.”

rcampbell on Dec 9, 2013 at 16:54:27

“Governors of Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma are moderates? Only compared to Ted Cruz' father and all the Popes prior to this one.

And this IS the Romney plan. And it is the plan developed and initially proposed by the Heritage Foundation, introduced in the Senate by Bob Dole in 1993 as the "market driven" alternative to Bill Clinton's proposal for universal healthcare.

In the end, nothing was done and the health insurance industry exploited Washington's timidity. Rates were raised 5%-30% annually while only insuring healthy people and making ever increasing profits, share prices and executive bonuses by denying care and coverage, canceling policies when folks were at their sickest, etc. And this is the system the GOP is disgracefully protecting.”

DarthProgressive on Dec 9, 2013 at 16:43:05

“The word moderate does NOT apply to either Jindal or Perry. Not entirely sure if you are aware of their policies, but being a resident of Louisiana, it is laughable that you are calling Jindal a "moderate." Maybe when he was in high school he had some moderate ideas, but no longer.”

“It is a useful opportunity to revisit history.
Magaret Tathcher and the British role in maintaining apartheid in the 1990's is not too far removed from their predecessor Winston Churchill's role in maintaining British colonialism in South India / Indian subcontinent in the 1940's while trying to rid "Fascist Domination" in somebody else's back yard.

Tathcher called Mandella a "Terroist".
Churchill called Gandhi a "Half Naked Fakir."

Something similar can be said about the 2010's in the Palestinian case where a minority is supressing the rights of the native majority by brutal force wrapped in some high sounding pious phraseology, which is bought by "academics" and other "scholars" and the press with a herd-mentality.”

Recently 60 minutes had a segment on a US company being granted a patent on a naturally occuring (not discovered) human breast cancer gene. The test to detect the gene that this company only could offer (and others were barred from developing) was at a cost of 3000.00 dollars. The same test could be done by competitors abroad for $300.00 without the patent protection.”

“The "sheer genius" is also called "creative thinking" which sadly is not innovative to constructively expand the pie; but to make a quick buck at someone else's expense. This is the whole basis of a bubble.

Now that the facade, decorated with some pious phraseology, is broken the consumers (99% and their friends) should just boycott these fast food places.”

StopTheHating on Dec 7, 2013 at 13:39:49

“Unfortunately making a quick but at someone else's expense is the very foundation of the American society. Every settler who came here did so to make their own fortune and it didn't matter who they stepped on or who got in the way. There was never any such thing as fairness. We have always been a loose conglomeration of individuals and never a cohesive society. It is how we arrived at this point were we have a ruthless 1% ruling class and a huge underclass of servants. We are now seeing the collapse of that foundation which permitted the creation of the 1%.

I would love to see all of the consumers boycott corporate America. The problem is we are so engrained with the "individual" culture that we can't work together. Americans don't think of the greater good of the society, we only think about ourselves. That is the very thing that companies like Walmart and McDonald's are counting on. We are our own worst enemies.

I am afraid America has to fail completely before we will be able to make any real changes for the better. The 1% controls the money, the food, the water, electricity, our heat, the government, the military, and the NSA.”

“Right wing politicians and pundits on TV and radio claim that the entry level jobs (fast food, hotel service, restaurants) do not deserve $15:00. Well I accept the concept of "entry-level jobs" and dont expect the pay to fund the retirement plan or savinge account.

But I do expect the pay to cover the "cost of labor" - rent, food, basic car and gas, healthcare, clothing and other necessitites.

Or else it is taxpayers that is subsidizing the labor costs of hefty profit-making corporation with food stamps, healthcare subsidies, tax credits etc. Not to mention many of these high profit companies are already getting tax breaks from the state and local community.

It is not difficult to calculate "the cost of labor." We calculate the poverty level, cost of living index, and several other fiscal parameters.

The important thing is to find a just solution to a problem that is fair to both sides.
And not exploit one side or the other. And then expect taxpayers to subsidize the corporation's "cost of labor" and / or bonus of senior management.

I am surprised some smart economist in academia or Dept of Labor (at federal or state level) has not worked this data.

As the workers go on strike, the vast middle class (consumers) should join their efforts in boycotting these industries for two weeks. Fast food and restaurants will soon be taking immediate corrective action.”

“"...it is taxpayers that is subsidizing the labor costs of hefty profit-making corporation with food stamps, healthcare subsidies, tax credits etc..."

And there you see the sheer genius of the 1% plan. The 1% will pay their employees slave wages and then encourage their employees to seek government assistance thereby having our government (the taxpayers) subsidize their payroll. All the while the 1% laughs all the way to the bank stopping only to bemoan the "lazy moochers" with the rest of the Republicans.”

Charliesboy on Dec 7, 2013 at 12:18:25

“The only problem I have with your post is the accepting of the concept of "entry level jobs" being applicable to these workers. With the % of the workers being heads of families close to, if not over 50%, these are more "anything I can get to keep from starving" jobs. These can only be considered entry level jobs if your ambition is become a McD's manager or franchise owner, of your feel a need to become a hotel manager. If entry level is supposed to denote the first job where you learn a work ethic or the compromises needed to keep a job, fine. But then again your parents and schools should have taught you those general lessons while you were growing old enough to have or need a job.”

Actually conservatives should be shouting-with-joy at the competition that the "marketplace" or "exchanges" bring forth and the many options a consumer enjoys.

Starting in January, since the patient will pay a deductible or co-pay, the patient will / should "take bids" from each provider on a per-incident basis.

In Atlanta, GA, the major local newspaper - Atlantic Constitution, will have a healthcare website where the cost of procedures and care from the various providers (hospitals) in the city will be posted. Readers in other communites should encourage their local newspaper or other entity to do the same.

This is a perfect opportunity and a darn good reason for all of us to be savvy consumers of healthcare. The more we demand from the healthcare providers, the more we will have to pay.

“I agree completely regarding education but I don't see this happening because frankly, a educated populace isn't in the best interest of the political/big special interest status quo which more easily exploits citizens if they remain uninformed.

Contrary to government, federal reserve, and media propaganda, our economy is not "recovering" - no matter how often they claim this.

1. Record numbers of citizens struggling on food stamps or facing long-term unemployment.
2. Rising personal and national debt.
3. Student loan defaults rising since many grads can't find decent jobs since so many are being outsourced to other countries because of bad trade deals (NAFTA, KORUS, Transpacific Partnership, etc.)
4. Lowest labor participation rate (62%) in 30 years - and declining.
5. The government claims total unemployment is 13.5%. According to many sources I've looked at (I try to get a consensus), the actual total (U-6) is closer to 23%.
As things get worse, the government simply revises the way the data is calculated to make things look better.

We need 300,000 GOOD jobs created every month to substantially reduce unemployment. We are nowhere near this.

Since politicians (controlled by big special interests) are failing to create the conditions for most to prosper, they subsidize many to buy their vote (and keep them from getting angry and demanding reform). This pacifies most and keeps them loyal but along with costly wars, government waste, fraud, etc. only accumulates more debt that with lack of good jobs, is dragging us down.”

“I submit the poor and the rapidly disintegrating middle class has structural problems of their own beyond economics which is contributing to their deteriorating economic situation.

Divorce doubles the cost of living - two homes, mortgages, insurances, adds to the instability, education and health for the individuals involved and their extended family.

However much money the Federal govt pumps to maintain the economy (federal and state govts' social programs for the poor and low interest rates to creat middle income jobs) the money will end up flowing to the rich in a "trickle up" manner.”

realilty on Dec 1, 2013 at 16:43:55

“I agree. Also agree that poverty isn't simply a matter of economics. Obviously we don't live in a "ideal" world.

The structural problems are many but if not dealt with only guarantee our country's failure. Yes, I understand that all nations fall at some point. But it shouldn't be because of the too often repeated theme in history of a wealthy and powerful minority exploiting everyone else.

Perhaps I'm wrong to believe that a person doesn't need to be intelligent to know when they are being prevented from achieving prosperity. I would like to believe that a certain level of natural instinct to know one is being cheated or exploited is more important.

Even is this were true, citizens still must be motivated enough to act. Too many too easily accept a monthly government check (in my view nothing more than a bribe to pacify citizens) rather than reforming government to gain FAR more opportunity to prosper by having decent jobs.

Regardless of people's capabilities, if they allow themselves to be exploited and be treated as sacrificial commodities, they only undermine themselves. So perhaps many also lack self-respect? This doesn't help them to prosper either.

It's very difficult for me to accept that we may very well be on auto-pilot to collapse. People have free will but they must be willing to use this to force reforms otherwise they forfeit any hope of prosperity and set themselves up for catastrophe.”
