“Folks are posting not understanding the pernicious medieval ritual called tenure, the license to remain a professor for life in university. In the new world called America such rituals exist. Which professor gets the tenure? The smartest, the best teacher, the best researcher..? NO.. Those who suck up to senior collagues and department chairman, and those who emerge better in gosips and whispers? YES. What haapens to the professor who is not given tenure? SCRAP HEAP IS WAITING AS NO UNIVERSITY WOULD HAVE THIS PROFESSOR! Why was this professor allowed to work for 6 years, if tenure was not available? GOOD QUESTION! Was the University and the Department try to steal her invention which
would bring money to her? PROBABLY YES.”

“I spoke my mind when I saw inept teaching and yes it p*ssed off some professors but I was paying their salaries. Just because they've obtained an advanced degree doesn't mean they can teach, period. They need to get that out of their heads. Student critiques speak volumes and community colleges and universitiy chairs should thoroughly read them.”

“Your post implies she should have known years ago tenure was not an option. You say if it was not available, she shouldn't have worked there 6 years. Clearly, you don't understand how tenure works. When a professor is hired by a university (I should know - I am one), he or she is hired with the promise (if they are tenure track) that they have 6 to 7 years to demonstrate their strength in a variety of areas, including teaching, research, and service to the university. Some universities have pre-tenure reviews, during which a tenure candidate is told after 3 years how he or she is progressing. Some are told they're on track and doing great. Others are told if there are problem areas and that they have 3 years to get things on track. None of know at this point if she had warning that tenure was or wasn't going to happen, but in my experience, professors generally know a year or two out how things are shaping up and whether or not they'll be granted tenure. Are some surprised and caught off guard? Sure. But if she had major issues she should have know this outcome was coming. Regardless, people are dead and this is a tragedy. I don't think it's the tenure process's fault. It's the fault of an unstable individual who clearly has deeper issues.”

“Sour grapes???? But I agree tenure leads to poor teaching quality. But, non-tenure faculty? Most are no better than high-school teachers. Many lecturers are unqualified and teach what was relevant for 1970s in 2010!!!”

“Mr. Scorpio, you obviously write from the perspective of someone who has not had a successful career in academia. And for that I feel for you. I am not a fan of tenure. I have been a member of over 30 promotion and tenure review committees. It is true that the discussions are often less than objective and often do come down to popularity contests.
Tenure provides protection for scholars and teachers so they don't have to fear retribution for pursuing certain paths of inquiry or speaking their beliefs. In this country, one ism or another has tried to assert litmus tests based on political or religious belief Clearly, even with her pedigree from Harvard and her invention did not, in the six years she had at UAH before her up and out review, satisfy criteria for promotion and tenure. Either her teaching was not up to standard (UAH is a well-regarded school), or she did not generate the requisite number of articles, books, conference papers or grants. Or she simply was too contentious and divisive in a department in which people have to work together.
But what stands out , especially after her killing of her brother was disclosed is that the university did thoroughly job of vet her. For that there is no excuse. Her colleagues, their families, her children and husband and her family, have been permanently scarred, because she should have been incarcerated a la Richard Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz.”

“The problem is that if there were no tenure all future generations would be taught by grad students and entry-level "professors" making McDonald's wages. A 45 year-old history professor cannot feed his, or her, family making a living "in the wild" so they would starve to death if fired and returned to the real job market. Universities would also fire anyone who did not teach Pravda.
It is a contractual obligation just like the guy the taxpayers paid $100,000,000 for twelve months work. Work for six or seven years and prove to the committee that you have the right stuff and we grant you a guaranteed mediocre income for life.
It worked better when the life expectancy was 20 years less but ....”

“I do not like people who invoke God in every sentence they utter. Voight
is yesterday's actor, is forgotten and this is the nub of the problem. He is
crying for attention, and honestly believes that God is a white Republican
who has private health insurance! Actually, I liked his acting in the Frederick
Forsyth's novel " The Odessa File" ( released in 1974). He sounded
moderate most of his life but age and the position of ex-actor has pushed him over
the sanity cliff. He sound very deluded. It is health care for his deluded mind
like guns for Heston's deluded mind.
The solution: Give him 1 hour TV time every time and let him rant and rave.
Five , 1 hour rants in five shows will exhaust him and he will shut up!”
“He was called Tricky Dicky .After Eisenhower presidency, America elected
flawed men, crooks, immorals( with the exception of Jimmy Carter) as Presidents-JFK, LBJ,Tricky Dicky, Bush (snr), Clinton ( the most immoral of them all), Bush (jnr) etc.. These guys
are the leaders of the free world, set upon wars from which they never learned. Defeated
in Vietnam, one would have thought American presidents would learn from history. No.Then
Iraq, the modern Vietnam.
To become a presidential candidate needs pots and pots of dollars. Upright and
honest Americans cannot get this kind of money. Only crooks can get them and
they become presidents. That simple-crooks in both parties.”

“You can thank tv for that outcome.
1960 was the first "tv election" and some claim it cost Nixon the presidency. He appeared far less presidential than JFK even in b & w. Most people did not have color tv & it was not broadcast in color even if they did.
Since that time, candidates have to raise exortitant sums of money to buy tv time and to pay people to teach & prepare them to "look presidential" on tv.”
“I agree. This myth of positive Kennedy image that Sorensen and his friends maintained and enhanced over the decades is so far from the reality. Once the last Camelot has come and gone, as young and bright men/women win his senate seat, we will see a revisionist opinion about Kennedy image, which is a kind of mirage any way. Who said
America has no Royals?”
Bozwellian on Aug 28, 2009 at 12:50:56
“Think it was a Kennedy who so stated it first, acknowledged it first....the GOPers just need their delusionalities , they cling to their embittered souls always and evermore...Others are wise enough to move on and make REAL PROGRESS....HERE's TO PROGRESSIVES !!! LONG MAY THEY REIGN !!!”
“I would not say he reformed from his hard-Republican stance. While the Americans
are rightly outraged about Scotland releasing Al Megrahi the Lockerbie bomber, the same Americans are perhaps comfortable about Teddy Kennedy's hard-republicanism and his assistance to collect funds for his Irish Republican brothers which straight went into buying Semtex and killing scores of British people. Teddy was a friend of Terrorists and no use in atoning by supporting the peace deal later, as it was Scotch-Irish Clinton who brokered. McGunness , the ex-IRA thug no wears a suit as a politician is attending Teddy Kennedy's funeral. Teddy Kennedy hated the British for the flimsy reason that his forebears were Irish. So much for America, the New World.”
“Shakespeare said" some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them". For Teddy Kennedy greatness is thrust upon him.
He had huge family connections and this saved him when his car companion died and he reported this after 10 hours. Ordinary mortals would be in prison even today serving life sentence.
He supported Obama as he did not like Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. Bill was Scotch-Irish a Protestant and Hillary's family came from Wales in Britain and was
also Protestant. Teddy considered himself as Irish and the support to Obama
“I am from England. My Austrain friends are flabbergasted to learn that Arnie is a governor material
and they sure will be knocked down into a deep coma if they realise that he is a presidential materal!
But then Austrian middle schools have a problem with their kids. The kids refuse to learn class material and when asked why ,they say no use in learning many sentences and point to the single liner Arnie! Sure Sen Hatch might have assumed that Arnie is really the Terminator masquerading as the governor. Coming back to birthers, they want Obama to proclaim he is a Kenyan and run for the Kenyan bush, it is as simple! If it is not racism I do not know what it is.”
“What scare mongering! I live in England, I am 65 and a pensioner and our
health secretary has not chosen me for killing! Come on, grow up and do not
depend on the mercy of insurance companies. I wish I could write
more about them as I lived in America.”
“I cannot but laugh at the terror of American friends young and old about
socialised medicine. Just look at French healthcare system the best in the
world or even our English system here . The essentail thing
is you need good quality family doctors who can get tests done quickly and
diagnose the problem for the specialists to take over. When I was in America
it took me 2 weeks to get the hospitalisation and tests done by my specialist
doctor who charged me to the hilt, my insurance company put many conditions
and I was scared going bankrupt. It just takes me as much time to see a
specialist here in England if my family doctor sets up the appointment with the specialist. If one is that concerned, one can top this up with a
hospitalisation insurance at a fraction of cost that one pays for insurance in Amerca.
I have such an insurance for my family and we get help from socialised medicine and when hospitalisation is required at a particular time (surgery for example)we can choose our surgeon as our private top up hospitalisation insurance pays for this. Most ases you do not need this.”
chickenNgravy on Jul 30, 2009 at 17:54:00
“I laugh also, at you. You expound on the awesome nature of socialized medicine, but if you need surgery, you go to a private Hospital. And your surgeon, by the way, can only do surgery in your private Hospital 1/2 day a week. It is the same surgeon that works in all the Government Hospitals.
I know we have problems but I worked as a surgeon for 6 months in England. Quit describing a rose, when its a tulip at best”
“I am from England and according to English Common Law as I understand it,
Obama's mother was American born American Citizen and that should automatically make Obama American Citizen. Further, Obama was born in Hawaii a legitimate state of the USA and hence he is an American born American citizen. Period. The question then would be did he renounce his American citizenship when he was with his mother in
Indonesia, where he was a minor I think and could have been done by his mother.
If this had not happened, he is Kosher American born American citizen.
America has some of smartest people. But I regre to state the dumbest outnumber them. This birther issue is harassment by the republicans. The fact that Obama is not white makes this a racist harassment. Get a grip on this, otherwise Amerixca is not fit to be a leader of the free world.”
“Easy. Clinton took credit for economy improving when in fact it began improving
in last years of Bush Snr presidency! Clinton got away with this lie and people
did not stop and hink that economy always work with lagging indicators.”
