“Ignoring the fact that Lynn Vincent willingly collaborated with Palin on the book, if I were Vincent, I'd consider it the highest form of honor to not be associated in any way with Palin or "Going Rogue," despite the work I'd put into it. But that's just me.

Unfortunately, this does sound like a case of Palin literally going rogue again.”

Sesame Street Writer Pens "I Love My Hair" Song to Empower Daughter

Commented Oct 19, 2010 at 23:53:58 in Style

“Reading this makes me feel so much better about this world that seems split down so many lines, gives me hope that by individually reaching out as human beings in our families, to our friends and coworkers, we can make a bigger difference in the world and draw us all a little closer, despite the lines.

I love that Sesame Street has been doing this for years, and that its relevancy continues to reach beyond children, to help us all learn a thing or two about being decent people and loving ourselves and our cohabitants on this surprisingly small planet exactly as we are.

And I love that the seed of this was that Joey Mazzarino loves his daughter so much that he wants her to feel like the perfect, beautiful, unique little girl she is (and to someday embrace the perfect, beautiful, unique woman she will be).”

“Oh, please tell me the Pee Wee Herman abstinence rings will be be available online! It's the perfect accessory to my Bristol Palin chastity belt (functioning lock not included, of course)!

I can't stand DWTS, but for Pee Wee, I'd watch and vote every night.

More Pee Wee. Please. We love you!”

“I, like so many of you, grew up with the Hughes, Stewarts, Snyders, and Walshes, and wept through the final episode, knowing that even though I wasn't a regular viewer in recent years, I'd never again be able to drop in on Oakdale's denizens now and then and catch up with my old friends. I was an Air Force kid and grew up far away from any family besides my mom and dad. The soaps provided me familial continuity and I know the twisted, often incestuous family trees of these folks as well as I know my own. Soaps often take a beating as vacuous, silly fluff from the intellectual realm, and as a as an academic by trade, I've always carried my love of shows like ATWT and GL as a secret, guilty pleasure. Thank you, Jennifer, for such an intelligent, deftly written testament to the emotional and not at all vacuous appeal of a dying art form.”

“Well said, sicksadworld96. Thanks for coming out of the soap closet and sharing your story. Most of my friends and family didn't know about my ATWT addiction either, until this piece came out.”

“I would argue that the thing that makes them BOTH abysmal parents is that they air their dirty laundry with each other in public and don't give a damn the effect it must have on these eight children. Deal with it behind closed doors, privately, not on a public stage and in full sight of your children, who for better or worse, have two parents on whose stability and affection they depend. Shameless. These two care only about themselves. Sadly, for the eight, another strong endorsement for birth control and/or more stringent screening for fertility treatments.”

“I agree with what Ms. King says in her thoughtful, measured letter, but after having read this thread, I get why she hesitated to write it in the first place. The discussion that followed is exactly why race relations seem to be an unsolvable problem in this country, with reductivist arguments that whittle issues of race to attitudes like all white people are privileged oppressors and all black people are whining and playing the race card.

Never mind that there’s a VAST gray area between and amongst blacks, whites, Asians, latinos, etc.

I am not so naïve as to believe that racism (and sexism and homophobia and…) doesn't continue to rage on in our society, that it doesn’t affect people in a very personal and inexcusable ways. I think any time a person is overlooked, unjustly accused, or in any other way discriminated against because of their skin color or anything other than just cause it’s disgusting. But perpetuating “us/them” mentalities on either side of this divide does nothing to help us all find the common ground to work toward fixing these problems. Many black people are rightly angry about what has happened and continues to happen to them. Many non-racist white people are rightly defensive about being grouped in with their more ignorant and hateful counterparts. But both sides raising the shackles against the other, making sweeping generalizations about one group of people or another does not solves problems. It just grinds the discussion to a halt.”
